Box Score Recap – 7/15/2013

Kelly Dugan hit his first AA homerun. Kenny Giles struck out the side in order in his inning of work. A good sign for him. I’d guess he’s a candidate for Arizona in the fall, or possibly for winter ball in Venezuela or the DR, since his workload was extremely limited by injury this year. Lakewood managed only as many singles as errors, 4, either of which would have spoiled a pretty nice outing from Nic Hanson – 8H 0BB 4K in 6IP. He’s been respectable as a starter, save the couple games before he hit the DL in late May. And 2012 draftee Ricky Bielski is throwing some good stuff out of the bullpen in the GCL – 6H 1BB and 8K in 7.1 scoreless innings on the year. Wouldn’t be surprised to se him moved up to WIL, or into the rotation, if he keeps it up.

Speaking of the Crosscutters, be sure to read our pal Mitch Rupert’s Mid-season Top 15 prospects. Dude loves him some Cody Ashce, folks. http://www.sungazette.com/page/blogs.detail/display/1206/Mid-season-Phillies-Top-15-prospects-list.html

And hey, while you’re at it, read some of Mitch’s other recent stuff, too – here’s a search to get you started: http://www.sungazette.com/page/search.results?nav=-1&keywords=mitch+rupert&btnSiteSearch=Search&StartDate=&EndDate=

  1. From recent interviews it seems that Joe Jordan and the Phillies want to get Giles up to AA as soon as he looks healthy and throws the ball consistently. That would give him a good chance to go to the AFL to get some work in (you can only send one player below AA to the AFL)

    1. Which is good. It’s a shame that he could have very well been a callup to the Phillies this year if it wasn’t for the injury.

        1. Definite possibility, but if he and Altherr are both still in A+, only one can go, and Altherr is the guy with a 40-man decision looming.

            1. Is it weird? Not to me. But I may not be the best arbitor of what is or is not weird.

So what’s the better phrase, anyway? “Strong possibility”, I suppose. Anyway, I’mma go eat some jumbo shrimp.

            2. A little bickering is okay, but please do not turn it into a civil war.

I realize it is not an oxymoron, but the English word that makes me go “hmm” is extraordinary. We know what that word means. But – it is 2 words thrown together – extra ordinary.

Kate Upton is extraordinary. My next door neighbor is extra ordinary.

Where was I? which prospect we were discussing? the extraordinary one, or extra ordinary one? (sorry for wasting the last 30 seconds of your reading)

    1. saw that and trying to remain optimistic but it looks like Phillies are going to have to make some deals to bring more talent into system.

  2. I went to the Crosscutters game last night.

To the extent that anyone is interested in hearing from someone without a scout’s eye and that was occasionally distracted by a two-year old that believes that sitting and watching baseball with Mom and Dad isn’t her thing right now, I did take some notes. I had hoped to see Lino, Pullin, and Cozens (as well as Green). Instead, I saw C-Bass, Cardozo, and Hiciano (well, Lino caught the 9th, no AB’s). So if you want to know how Lino, Pullin, and/or Cozens looked, you will have to wait for another game.

Out of the hitters, Tromp and Knapp looked the best last night. Tromp hit the ball hard each time and would have had another hit but for an impressive diving catch by Aberdeen’s CF. The catch saved at least 1 if not 2 runs. Knapp (DH) swing looked good, seemed fluid. Conversely, Green did not look that good last night. He was out in front several times, as if he was being over-aggressive, lunging to get getting underneath only to pop up (2x’s). I don’t recall him making solid contact. Just an off night I guess. Parr and Hiciano hit the ball hard at times. Hiciano looked awkward trying to steal second base (thrown out). Knapp led off the 9th with a single to center, but Parr and Green both popped up weakly. Hiciano hit a fluky bloop over the 1B, playing in, but was beat to first for the final out. He was less than pleased about the call.

As for pitchers, Julio Reyes (RH) started the game and went 5 innings. In the early innings, his fastball was in the 90-91 range, hitting 92 on occasion. In the fifth, he was around 89-90. I didn’t have a good view of the movement of his off-speed stuff. The box score says he had two errors on pickoff throws in the 5th, but he had what I thought was a third error (which was actually the first error of that inning) when a roller down the first base line by Aberdeen’s Veloz was picked up by 1B Sam Dove, Reyes did not come over to cover the bag for a throw. Veloz wound up scoring the first run for Aberdeen. As I sat just behind first base, I saw Reyes gesture angrily. Not sure if that was directed at himself or Dove. Buckley had some issues, hitting one batter, walking another, two hits.

    Hope this helps.

        1. I sometimes wonder why Mikael Franco even bothers to get up every morning – he’s doomed I tell ya . . . .doomed!

    1. Travis D’arnaud is going to set the record for most years on the top fifty prospects lists.

        1. You are right about those two, but at least they began to be placed on the lists at age 18-19. This guy will have 4 top 50 preseason, since reaching AA.
D’arnaud will be close to retirement, by the time he reaches Free agency.

    2. Can someone enlighten me on Kyle Crick? As far as I can tell he has a plus fastball, with plus-plus potential. A (present/future) 30/40 slider, 50/60 curve, and 40/50 change. This profile seems remarkably similar to Biddle, except Crick is right handed, younger and further away from the majors, plus has more control issues at present. So what is it that makes him a better prospect than Biddle? I know it isn’t a knock on Biddle to be a lower level prospect than some others, but I’m just confused as to Hulet’s reasoning here. He knocks Biddle for control issues, but doesn’t even mention Crick’s, so I figured he must have some really high end potential that makes up for it, but as far as I can tell they both look to be #2 or 3 starters.

      1. The biggest difference is the fastball. Biddle’s fastball is in the 55-60 range for a LHP (it is a 50 FB from a RHP). Crick’s fastball has true plus-plus velocity. The curveballs are pretty similar grades and both have an average secondary pitch with plus potential (Crick’s cutter and Biddle’s changeup). The fastball though is a big separator at the big league level and can really allow secondary pitches to play up more.

If you were looking at the two of them Biddle’s raw stuff points to a high floor #3 starter (in reality to be a #2 something else has to jump a grade or two) and Crick’s stuff points more to a #2 starter.

Personally I think fangraphs was a little velo and potential happy on Crick. I actually would take Biddle over Crick and I think BA’s ranking of Biddle #43 and Crick #49 is more where I would have them. I think Biddle’s floor outweigh’s Crick’s projection, but if you see the command profile somewhere on Crick he certainly has everything else you want in a front-line starter.

        1. Their curveballs are similar grades! That would appear to be questionable with Biddle’s being his best pitch and rated high by all.

  3. Was anyone at the Reading game? If so, how did Cesar Hernandez commit his error? Just curious. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more talk about his position switch on here, unless I’ve just missed it somehow…

    1. (was watching the game stream)
He definitely committed it, he took a bad route going back on a ball and just completely missed the catch.

There has been some minor discussion on it, but I think a lot of us are really watching and waiting for reports and how long they continue with it before making any opinions on it.

      1. oh ok…was trying to think of what would be the best case scenario on his error and I came up with

        1. Throwing error
        2. Misplayed a groundball hit right at him — we could chalk this up to a fluke since he can obviously field a groundball
        3. Dropped a flyball hit right at him — probably just fluke
        4. Mis-played a line drive hit directly at him (over his head) in CF — this is the hardest ball to play for any CF, so there will be growing pains with this I’m sure
        5. Worst case scenario – ran a bad route and totally mis-played a ball –

I’m half kidding with this list, and I know there will definitely be growing pains. Hopefully it pans out cause his bat would play nicely in CF

  4. Its hard to believe that Cesar with 10 -15 games in CF will be able to play in the majors. Gillies seems like a possible call up on Friday although my money is on MiniMart, again, if they resolve the 40 man issue. There’s also the possibility that they bring Galvis back up since he played some OF also before he went down.
Giles looks ready for AA and Burgess looks ready for CWater. Jordan will definitely move some bodies around as we come down the stretch but I think some B prospects will be traded soon and not have to be accounted for then.

    1. The WIL radio guy seems to say on Twitter that 2 guys are likely going to Lakewood today. I’ll guess it’s two relievers – any of Buckley, Ridenhour, Rojas, Rios or Santos.

    2. Murray….’I think some B prospects will be traded soon and not have to be accounted for then.’…wishful thinking I am afraid. Majority of baseball clubs are in the same boat. Personally, I tri to trade the B prospects for more international monies, if that is legit under the CBA.

    1. Good for him. Maybe Mitch Walding will do the same, after he looks at his stat line at the end of the year.

      1. Little early for that VOR his stat line is not even close to Hudson’s, but I can tell you’re rooting against him

            1. It’s always interesting for me to observe which players are allowed to have negative comments made about them in each thread. It’s pretty easy to anticipate who will inspire defense from negativity.

            2. I don’t believe anyone should be rooting against any prospect, even Larry Greene. I have been supportive of him and I still have hope that he’ll tap into some of his raw power.

            3. To show the difference in treatment on the board between similar level performers. Mitch Walding and Larry Greene: Similar numbers, similar age, similar bonus, same performance and same level. It seems acceptable here to make nasty comments about Greene in every thread, with no defenders. So predictable, to see the vigorous defense of Walding. Amusing.

            4. I’m not sure what you are insinuating here–if there is a racial element at work–but there are two, clear differences btw Greene and Walding to explain the discrepancy. First, Greene came to camp twice out of shape. That instantly disqualifies him in the minds of most fans, myself included, from any slack. There’s no indication that Walding didn’t show the necessary off-season dedication. And then, of course, there are hugely divergent expectations for a comp round pick and a 5th rounder. You know this, I’m sure. So I don’t know where you are going with this…

  5. I can tell that Anonymous VOR probably never played any sport. All the negative comments just shows jealousy. Rooting against your own prospects because they all haven’t put up Franco Stats is sad. Green, Walding & even Quinn have started a little slow but these guys are only 20 & came straight out of High School. Give them a break. Most the players that everybody raves about on the Lakewood team are mostly 22 years old or older. With the exception of Tocci. But isn’t it nice that some of these guys do have other options if they don’t make it in baseball.

    1. VOR was making a point that seems to escape many posters. He is not ‘rooting against’ your own prospects’. He showed as a good example why people will denigrade Larry Greene but not Mitch Walding, who have similar production. Is it because Greene comes off as ‘lazy’ (two years running not showing up in shape to play) and a million-dollar first round pick who appears not to appreciate what has come his way. Or somethinbg more assidious like , be I say it, skin-color. What ever the reasoning, Larry Greene does get more criticism then others from that draft.
