Box Score Recap – 7/12/2013

Holy Severino Gonzalez. 11K, 3H and 2BB in 6 scoreless. The most shocking thing there might actually be that he walked 2 guys on the same day. 6 K in 3IP for Yacksel Rios in his first start of the year at WIL. His K/BB on the year sits at 15/1. Maybe something’s clicked for him. Time will tell. Rehab start for Adam Morgan at GCL – 2R, 3H 3K in 3IP. Good to see him back in action. And the first professional homerun from Jose “Don’t Call Me Albert. No, Seriously, Don’t. It’s Jose.” Pujols. Weird nickname. Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB.

  1. Were both OF assists at home for Clearwater? 4H 5BB with only 1 K and 1 DP in 4 innings and no runs scored just doesnt add up. Must have been a crazy game!

    1. Someone on Twitter last night said they were both at home. Might have been Winks. Can’t recall.

  2. Carmona on quite the roll. Looks like the start of one of those stretches he had at Lakewood last season

Looking forward to seeing Severino down here in Tampa Bay

    1. He’s hot but he’s not really impressive at all given his position. Isn’t he like a long term 1st basemen? Where’s the power?

      1. He’s lineup protection for the guys that matter. Much like many overage 1B/DH’s before him.

  3. Great day for starting pitchers all around — I was pleasantly surprised to see Morgan’s name in a box score today. Severino … this guy definitely has something. Can’t wait to see if he builds on it as he advances through the system.

Nice line from Tocci: 2-4 with a walk and a run. I wish he stole more bases … on base three times yesterday without even an attempt, and he only has six for the year. There have been disagreements on this board in the past as to whether he has plus speed. It kind of makes one wonder whether there is validity to those arguments.

    Like

    1. Totally agree. It’s odd that he’s not even attempting to steal. It’s hard to believe he doesn’t at least have above average speed (maybe 50 or 55) and possibly better than that. Seems like it’d be good for him to at least get a feel for base stealing even if he gets caught a bunch of times.

      Like

    2. He has plus speed. It’s easy to see it in the OF. But he’s just a kid, he hasn’t realized yet how to harness that tool on the basepaths. Give it some time and it should start happening.

      1. I’m sure his age and inexperience have a lot to do with it. I suppose they’re just trying not to throw too much at him at a young age. That said, I think the fact that he is green as a base stealer is exactly why he should have more attempts — because isn’t that how you learn? He’s stolen six bags and been caught 5 times, equaling 11 attempts. He has singled or walked 71 times this season. Even if he had a man on second in front of him in half of those instances — highly doubtful, given where he has hit in the lineup — that’s still only an attempt in less than one out of every three chances to go first-to-second.

If he’s going to learn, they might as well start him now.

        1. Please read the profile that was written up on him by one of the fine leaders of this site. It is disrespectful to the effort he is putting in to ask these questions when they’ve already been covered at length.

          1. A. Get a handle.
            B. Disrespectful? Please.
            C. The purpose of this site is to discuss the performance and potential of players in the Phillies farm system. Carlos Tocci’s lack of stolen bases — particularly given the speed he is said to posses in spades — is certainly an issue that could be the topic of a good discussion. Why you believe this is an inappropriate topic is beyond me.
            D. Did I mention the handle?

  4. Ben Badler said on Twitter yesterday that Severino’s fb has been up to 94 mph.

If so, we’ve got a guy who can hit 94, and who’s allowed 13 baserunners in 21 innings and struck out 31. Does anybody think maybe he should be heading back to Clearwater pretty soon?

    1. A surprising good young arm. Not as concerned where he pitches but he definitely needs to be treated as a valued prospect at this point.

      Like

      1. I agree that he should be treated that way, if the velocity is real. In that vein, he should be at a level that presents some challenge to him, which Lakewood apparently does not. But I guess the Phils will go by what they see from him on the mound. Maybe he’s working on something specific and they want him to do so in a low pressure environment.

        Like

        1. Evidently the velo is 91 max. Mickey M. even alludes to him not being a ‘power arm’..he should know, he sees him everyday. I guess that changes perception a bit as a prospect.

    2. Don’t forget the Phillies had a purpose in sending Severino to Lakewood. That was to stretch his arm out to be a starter. They will move him when the time presents itself. Patience.

    3. Ya I posted earlier he responded to my tweet, but I took it as that he can run it up to 94. He probably sits between 90-92. He is 6-3 and listed at 153 I believe so more to fill out and add velocity

    4. It bothers me that he Phils have been so surprised by his success. It doesn’t speak well of their talent evaluation skills.

      Like

      1. If that bothers you then you’ve really got no clue how inefficient talent evaluation is across the entire sport. Scratch that. Across all sports. It’s a total crap shoot. For every 1 they get right there are at least 100 they get wrong.

  5. I know this has nothing to do with last nights milb scores for the phillies , but did anybody happen to see Cosart light up the radar gun and the rays last night. Im pulling for the guy , Im stiil bummed he is not a philly, man he sure would look good in red pinstripes right about now. Next up the disgust ill feel when Singleton hits the bigs and once again Ive got to see billboards and signs with Hunter Pence in my neighborhood , ughhh

    1. Somewhere Ed Wade is giggling….oh no, dang he works for the Phillies now!
Picture Ruben with his hands around Ed Wade’s neck yelling….’why do you keep fleecing me!’

      Like

      1. i wouldn’t say the phillies were fleeced. they received a pretty good power-hitting corner outfielder in his prime in pence. the problem was, he was only in philly for a year, and the return the phillies got for trading him to SF was much less than what they gave up in 2011.

        Like

      1. I agree it’s premature to say it’s a given that Cosart is a stud MLB starter. He still has K and BB question marks along with potential injury concerns with his delivery (wasn’t he said to have Inverted W or something). As Matt has said on this site he will probably end up as a high leverage reliever in the long run.

        Like

        1. It’s definitely premature to label Cosart a successful prospect, but it’s also premature to question his lack of strikeouts given that it was one start. K’s were not a problem for him in AAA.

I didn’t see his start last night but I’ve read that he generates a lot of weak contact with his fastball. I imagine there was a good bit of that given the Rays struggles trying to get a hit.

  6. I never knew he could throw that hard, and he has a good offspeed pitch too, Houston has there first stud, out of the four,

  7. Asbury Press reports Gonzalez’ top out at 90/91 velo. And, frok the believe it or not category, Mickey Morandini brings up Greg Maddux in the conversation about Severino….oh please not there again. Last year it was Ryne Sandberg with Tyler Cloyd.

    1. HC are in the business of fluffing their prospects. With that velocity he could reach #5 starter if everything breaks right for him.

    1. I dont want Hunter (the twitch) Pence back. although none of the aforementioned prospects really inspires me either, and most of all I think the phillies can spend 15 million in a better way

    1. For now, the best answer is to wait and see how the next two weeks of play sort out the standings. Are the Phillies just on a short hot streak, or has the quality of their play actually improved. The recent record has been great, but in a long season, every team — even the Marlins, has a short period with a high win percentage, before the pendulum swings back the other way. We still haven’t actually fought back to .500 yet.

  8. I am on the fence on this subject, If I was gm. wouldnt know what to do, Atlanta and Washington aren’t that good, but either are we. If you trade Young and bring up Asche and he fails, they will kill you, so imo this is really a hard decision,

    1. Amaro will be crucified either way. Considering his job will be on line if Phillies don’t make playoff, look for young and maybe two minor league prospects to be traded for bullpen. He could careless about the phillies in 3-4 years.

      1. Win or lose, RAJ has a longer tenure than you think. The Phillies aren’t a team which goes through GMs quickly. Look how long Ed Wade lasted.

        Like

        1. Yeah RAJ is probably here for another few years regardless of what happens this year or probably even next year. The last two years have been disappointing by our recent standards but it’s not like this is a 65 win team. I don’t see how we’re sellers this year. With 2.5 weeks left before the deadline we’re still within striking distance of the division and the wild card.

  9. i know this doesn’t belong here, but i can’t find the general discussion thread.

i hope this embarrassment of a game puts to rest any ridiculous ideas the phillies are in the hunt for a playoff spot. the white sox are one of the worst teams in baseball, with a horrible road record, and you can’t score one stinkin’ run with men on second and third and no outs in the ninth, or men on first and third and one out on the 10th? laynce nix hasn’t gotten a meaningful hit in two months (great job signing him to a two-deal, ruben) and ruiz looks like an offensive shell from last year (guess the drugs made a difference). and don’t get me started on delmon young.

    ok, rant over.

  10. Joe Jordan spoke effusively about Sev Gonzalez today on the radio pregame show with Jim Jackson. He explained that not only did they want to stretch him out but also wanted him to get in a routine and use his bullpen sessions between starts to work on his four pitches. He also spoke highly of the calm, confident demeanor of J.P. Crawford.

  11. Revere with a broken right foot. That’s two months at least. Does Gillies get the call?

    Like

    1. They’re going to have to make a decision on Gillies this season. The guy has nearly 1,800 minor league plate appearances. New swing or no, he’s seen every type of pitcher he’s going to see in the minors. Might as well bring him up and see if he can stick or not.

  13. Nice to see LGJ go 1 for 4. Glad we have him in A ball rather than the Red Sox pick immediately after the LGJ pick, Jackie Bradley, Jr. Might actually have a decent option with Rever going down..

    1. Supposedly, LGJr. Allowed a home run in yesterday’s game. He wasn’t paying attention to the game and didn’t move, the ball dropped in the outfield.

I’m not 100% of this but twitter was kind of blowing up about it.

  15. Don’t ask about Shane Watson’s absence:
    Watson getting a break
Joe Jordan, the Phillies’ director of player development, said that Lakewood righthander Shane Watson will be given a rest in hopes of having him finish strong. Watson was the Phillies’ top pick last year, the 40th overall selection. He was a supplemental pick, drafted between the first and second rounds. On Wednesday, Lakewood placed him on the disabled list with right shoulder soreness.
“He is fine, but he’s a little tired right now,” Jordan said. “We’re getting ready to give him a breather, and he has logged a lot of innings.”
Last summer, Watson learned he had Type 1 diabetes. Jordan said that Watson has done well dealing with the disease.
“We’re giving him a little bit of a blow, and hopefully he will finish strong,” Jordan said. “He will be skipping a few starts, and we hope that allows him to get his feet underneath him, and we think that it’s important that he pitch in August.

  16. Big week for GCL Phillies. They have 9 games in 6 days. Three 7 inning doubleheaders. Will have a mighty tired pitching staff.

Also nice piece on Comcast today on Franco. Said he will DH today in Futures Game. Can’t wait to see Biddle and Franco.
