Box Score Recap – 5/29/2013

A mild improvement from last time for Austin Wright – he did give up 4 walks and 5 hits, but he got through 5.1 IP. He threw 73 pitches, 41 for strikes, which needs to get better. To me, he’s a candidate to go to the AFL as a starter – if he’s completely healthy, of course. He missed some time, and so would likely have some innings left under his season limit, and seeing him against some better competition probably couldn’t hurt in evaluating his ceiling as a starter.

Cameron Rupp with another homer – he’s up to 8 on the year and his OPS for May sits just over 1.000. A bit of a clunker from Perci Garner – couldn’t get out of the fifth inning while allowing 4R, 6H, 4BB and striking out just 2. Kelly Dugan with his 4th HR – his OPS sits 20 points higher than where he finished 2012 as he gets to a pretty significant sample of around 125 PAs. The guy can rake a little bit – no doubt about it.

  1. Tocci with another double and they are batting him 2nd. I kinda think he’s gonna stick at Lakewood all year at this point.

    1. We’ll see. He’s showing just enough life that it’s possible. Given his skill set, there’s probably less advantage to dropping him back a level. It’s not like he’s having contact issues and he’ll probably have the same power issues in the NYP

  2. I am getting very excited about Rupp. He’s an incredibly strong guy who is a highly skilled receiver and has the mentality of a linebacker (a couple of weeks ago I told the story about how Rupp nearly started a full bench brawl at Reading when, after he blocked a guy at the plate, he stared him down and spiked the ball at his feet – it was awesome stuff). I love the guy and Phillies fans would too. The hope was always that, given his strength and build, he could develop power as he went along and now he’s doing that and his plate discipline is quite good. I’ll tell you what, if he continues to do well for another month or so, I’d be strongly tempted to have him and Joseph switch places. Joseph could use another full year in AA and Rupp is, to me, auditioning for a spot on the team in the near future – if he adjusts to AA pitching I’d like to know how he’d fare against AAA hurlers.

    1. Agreed on being intrigued by Rupp. I like that he was a leader on a big time College team and seems to be improving as he moves up the line in the minors. He has always had the makings of an on field leader and good defender. If he can add a reasonable hit piece .250 – .260 and 15 HR 60 RBI on the ML level I would be very happy. Maybe he can be more and, of course, maybe he will be less. We shall see. I guess we will also have to take into account the apparent hitter friendly nature of the field at Reading.
His improvement also highlights the sharp drop in Valle’s game. There many here who had him ticketed as Chooch’s replacement. I know he has his low walk and high K issues, but the bottom really fell out.

    2. I am fan also. He just doesn’t get alot of love here. I think physically powerful catchers add intangibles to a team. Kratz is playing with edge and power and to be perfectly honest I prefer to watch him over Chooch. Sometimes you have to look outside of metrics and just look at resiliency and improvement. Rupp is proving to be that guy and is closer to reaching ML than Joseph or Valle.

  3. I would have started Dugan in Reading but that’s just me. He’s quietly compiled 1100 PA’s with a 293 Avg. 371 OBP along with .808 OPS. Not sure that projects him as much more than a 4th OF but there also could be more ceiling if he taps into more power.

To bad he’s not a right handed bat

    1. Just because the Phils lack good RHBs right now? Most pitchers are right handed, so there’s nothing wrong with a good LHB.

    2. I’d give Dugan until the end of June. See if he can maintain his current production before moving up. More exciting to me is that while his ISO has climbed to .204, his K% has dropped to 21%. If he can maintain that with his current 8% BB rate it would be a huge plus for the system.

  4. It’s too bad for Wright, looks like he ran into trouble in the 6th, as he had a 2 hit SO going when I was checking the boxscore last night as I was hoping the game would be on Milb.tv

  5. Saw both Ironpigs games in Rochester last night. Castro looked pretty solid – nice level swing and really hit the ball hard every time he made contact. Asche also got robbed of 2 singles. One on a diving play by the 2B in the completion game, and another time in Game 2 when the first baseman made a similar play. Both times Asche was out by just half a step.

Was hoping to see a different SP than Valdes. He really got lit up. The ball was absolutely flying out Frontier Field last night. There was some wind going out to LF but that park usually plays big.

Other observations…Jermaine Mitchell is really fast…Hanzawa plays a smooth SS, and Asche made a sweet stab on a laser that was hit so hard I barely saw it. He looks really comfortable there.

  6. Forgot to add that Castro looked fine in CF, and also made a sick diving catch in LF in game 2. He ran all the way to the corner to rob a Red Wings guy of a double. That was very impressive.

  7. Glad to see good feelings about Rupp who is making slow but steady improvement while moving up through levels. Labeled the best defensive catcher in the system, he also has a penchant for coming on at bat in the last half of a season. His ability to hit HRs makes him at least a serious candidate for MLB play, at least as a back-up.

With Joseph now being “cured” of his concussion reaction, Rupp might now be our best catcher on the pharm.

Question: move him up to LV sometime late in this season? With Ruiz to be re-signed for a couple years, the next catcher is yet to be determined. Glad to see Rupp in the mix.

  8. good to see Rupp tearing it up ,bad to see Larry Greene still doesn’t have a home run.

  9. Wow, I didn’t realize that Hernadez has removed mid-game and told to get to Philly as fast as possible. How does that conversation go?

    1. The game with the box score at the top was Tuesday’s game, finished yesterday after a rain delay.
