A second look at the middle infield around the system. It is frankly a bit frightening with Cesar Hernandez not included as he is in Philadelphia. The real bright spot is Carlos Alonso who is a 25 year old, 32nd round draft pick, playing High A. Roman Quinn continues to gives inconsistent rays of hope with the bat, but is currently on a pace for 60 errors this year.
Lehigh Valley
Troy Hanzawa, 27, Phils 16th round pick in 2008; .357/.379/.464 in 84 AB’s between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 1HR 9RBI; 1/2SB; 3%bb/13%k rates; Hitting .435 in 23 AB’s since getting called up to Lehigh Valley. 15 games at SS with 2 errors (.964); 3.53 R/F. 9 games at 2B with 2 errors (.957); Hanzawa was called up to compensate for the loss of Martinez and Hernandez and has done a good job. He is a slap hitter, weighing 150 at best, but has done that well and played a solid SS.
Pete Orr, 33, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .248/.289/.398 in 148 AB’s; 2HR 14RBI; 3/6SB; 5%bb/19% k rates; .182 vs. LHP, .264 vs. RHP, .258 with RISP. .313 in May. 6 games at 2B with 1 error (.969); 19 games at SS with 3 errors (.963); 4.05 R/F. 7 games in the OF without an error. Orr has been starting to hit after a miserable April. He remains valuable because of his versatility.
Note: Cesar Hernandez and Michael Martinez are not included as they are currently on the Phillies roster.
Reading
Albert Cartwright, 25, Acquired from Houston in 2010; .263/.302/.274 in 179 AB’s; 3HR 14RBI; 5/10 SB; 4%bb/26% k rates; .439 vs. LHP, .232 vs. RHP, .209 with RISP; .204 in May. 43 games at 2B with 7 errors (.963); 4.23 r/f. Cartwright is another guy who had a huge start in April and followed that with a miserable May.
Edgar Duran, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2007; .239/.286/.331 in 163 AB’s; 2HR 13RBI; 5/10 SB; .200 vs. LHP, .246 vs. RHP, .273 with RISP, 4%bb/24% k rates; .247 in May. 43 games at SS with 11 errors (.936); 3.89 R/F. Very pedestrian numbers.
Clearwater
Carlos Alonso, 25, Phils 32nd round pick in 2010; .281/.384/.399 in 178AB’s; 3HR 23 RBI; 1SB; 11%bb/13% k rates; .236 vs. LHP; .301 vs. RHP, .256 with RISP. .255 in May. 43 games at 2B without an error, 4.86 R/F. Also, 1 game at 3B and 2 in the OF without errors. ALonso continues to be a steady performer who, while unorthodox, gets the job done. Is always putting the ball in play, and very solid at 2B.
Jose Mojica, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2013; .282/.344/.338 in 142 AB’s; 0HR 18RBI; 0SB; .327 vs. LHP, .258 vs. RHP, .260 with RISP; .211 in May; 7%bb/17% k rates. 43 games at SS with 5 errors (.979) 4.09 R/F. After an excellent April, a slow May for Mojica.
Jonathan Roof, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2012; .337/..402/.377 in 87 AB’s; 1HR 11RBI; 2/4 SB; 10%bb/15% k rates; .200 vs. LHP, .366 vs. RHP, .292 with RISP. 10 games at 2B with 2 errors (.936); 10 games at SS with 2 errors (.959). Roof missed a good amount of time on the DL, but has played well when in the lineup.
Matt Tolbert, 31, Signed as a free agent in 2013. Has been on the DL for all but one game in 2013.
Lakewood
Angelo Mora, 20, SIgned as a free agent in 2010; .195/.294/.250 in 164 AB’s; 0HR 8RBI; 3/6 SB; .172 vs. LHP, .200 vs. RHP, .163 with RISP; .162 in May. 12%bb/18% k rates. 38 games at 2B with 7 errors (.964); 5.34 R/F. 6 games at SS with 2 errors. Mora has really struggled with the bat. A difficult April followed by a more difficult May. A positive is an encouraging walk rate, and the fact he has played a good 2B.
Roman Quinn, 20, Phils 2nd round pick in 2011; .251/.338/.372 in 183 AB’s; 4HR 16RBI; 24/30 SB; 9%bb/25%k rates; .286 vs. LHP, .243 vs. RHP, .231 with RISP, .298 in May. 46 games at SS with 22 errors (.878) 3.46 R/F. Has been hitting very well as of late and using his speed quite well. Fielding continues to be an issue as he has nearly as many errors as SB.
Alejandro Vilalobos, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .211/.250/.225 in 71 AB’s; 0HR 9RBI; 1/3 SB; 5%bb/15% k rates; .222 vs. LHP, .208 vs. RHP, .292 with RISP. 12 games at 2B without an error; 1 game at SS with 1 error. After a good 2012 in Lakewood, Vilalobos has been far less productive this year and hasn’t been playing as much.
It would be a baseball miracle if Oscar Mercado fell to the Phils in the 2nd round

I don’t understand why you needed to be so literalist about excluding Cesar Hernandez, who was promoted two days ago, has spent the entire season up to now in AAA, and is our hottest middle infield prospect – but I don’t write these articles, I just read ’em. Thanks for the other info.

With regard to this category, Tyler Greene appears to be a big over-slot miss. Just off the top of my head, i came up with the following list of guys the Phillies went very agressively to sign: Colvin, Pointer, Musser, Schull, Walter.
I still hold out some hope for Pointer but not much. The others? It’s tough to say… although it doesn’t look great.

They didn’t give Greene that much. 350K. That is no loss. Schull got less than 250K to sign. If anything, both those players loss the opportunity to go to college with their HS classmates, for a few dollars that are most likely gone now.

Greene and Schull are busts but Colvin is a borderline prospect and Pointer is having a good season

No way Quinn can stay in the infield, horrible fielder, seen it live, maybe because of his size but just pathetic
