Box Score Recap – 5/28/2013

Very solid night from Yoel Mecias – 4H, 1BB, 8K in 6 scoreless innings. In the same game, Larry Greene somehow stole two bases. Wacky. (note – I couldn’t find the second one in the recap, then I realized he just stole one – it was his second of the year – I will leave my mistake here for all of you to shame me if you like).

Elsewhere, Carlos Zambrano was upstaged by Severino Gonzalez, though I bet Big Z rises through the system faster. Also, David Buchanan on the unlucky side of a pitcher’s duel in Bowie, with each team managing just 4 hits, while Leandro Castro homered and Ethan Martin was pulled after 50 lackluster pitches in a game that was suspended in Rochester.

      1. Agreed he’s been pretty good in May so far. Walks are around 8% which is really good for him, and his WHIP is 1.06. Brundage did his stats a favor taking him out of a game where he was struggling last night. He was only at 50 pitches, so who knows what else he might have given up before the game was halted.

        1. and his line could’ve been much better last night, because the BP allowed all three of his inheirted runners to score.

    1. He’s got two more option years, so if someone there thinks they can still fix his control, they’ll keep starting him. I would hope that if he doesn’t figure it out this year, they don’t bother trying again next year, but who knows what the team’s evaluators see that they think they can tinker with.

  1. Yoel Mecias is making strong case that he might be ready for new challenge at Clearwater.

    Over past 6 starts:
    ERA 1.53
    WHIP 1.19
    k/9 11.3

    1. No need to push him, he is only 19 and pitched in the GCL last year. Yesterday was his first career outing of 6 IP. The next challenge is can he consistently work deeper into games while keeping his stuff. He needs to find a breaking ball to pair with the fastball and changeup.

That being said, it has been very impressive

        1. The only issue being the two strategies, before this year, were not mutually exclusive. We could have still signed those guys for bargains after signing, say, Soler to the big bucks.

        2. Wow what a statement. you must work for the Phillies/ are you RUBEN AMARO. they have two a ball prospects who have done nothing and now. you will defend there lack of spending. tell rangers that with Profar, and 9 other top prospects from international spending. or cardinals with Taveras who is a monster at 20 years old. all the years in international market they got a catcher in Choo. and a great fielding. no hit shortstop in
Galvis. and a wild reliever in Bastardo. great job.

      1. Someone said Reading, but I can’t recall if that was someone who knew or someone speculating. One would imagine he’ll come north at some point soon and pitch home games with Reading or Lehigh Valley whenever his turn comes up and until he’s stretched out, and then settle in and travel with AAA until they call him up to the bigs or release him.

For anyone, is he technically on the DL and starting a rehab assignment, or was he just allowed to be in XST because he’s on a minor league deal? I think the latter but I could be wrong.

        Like

        1. he was signed to a minor league deal with an opt out after july 1st if he isnt in the big leagues.

          Like

          1. So he’s allowed to be in XST and shuffled freely among the minor leagues as they see fit, I guess. That’s good. If they haven’t used him by July 1, there’s probably nothing there – Zambrano will probably take Cloyd’s spot in a couple turns unless Tyler Cloyd really goes on a good run or Zambrano is just awful in his upcoming minor league appearances. Or Zambrano has a tantrum of some sort. That’s possible also.

            1. When the Big Zambi comes up and teams up with the ‘Big Piece”, then we will see the Fightins get the storm going. It will be like an EF5 hitting the NL East. I hope people will then applaud Ruben when it is all said and done.

  3. It’s funny that the first two posts on this thread take one game into consideration for what to do with a developing player. Really shows why following a farm system is not for those with short attention spans.

  4. Greene is not as slow as you think–should keep your eye one him–better than a lot of other guys in that team. Been waching them a lot. I like Numata, Walding, Tocci, Carmona & Charles. Quinn BLOWS. Makes Doubles to TRIPLES the errors a game that the BOX reports. Send him to Williamsport. Waste of $$ and time.

    Like

    1. Are you saying the other teams have players that get a double from balls hit to short stop . Where does Quinn throw the ball into center field or down the left field line? I think you are over reacting and possible embellishing . Or maybe Im just confused by your linguistic skills, either way , give Quinn some time ,Quinn unlike Greene at least does what he was supposed to do which is steal a lot of bases. Greene on the other hand has yet to hit a homerun and his average is now below the mendoza line again

      Like

      1. It’s worded strangely but I think he means Quinn’s actual number of errors is double or triple the number reported. Anyone else been watching him and can tell us how bad he’s really been?

        Like

          1. Quinn gets the benefit of the doubt because of some serious raw talent , he is blisteringly fast , and nobody in the farm has another 8 out of 8 on the 2 to 8 scale

            1. The info you get from the organization from the GLC, Williamsport, and Lakewood is spoon fed. If you sit in the stands for a few games and watch or talk to the players about the errors removed its a little disheartening. Age and learning a new position is a cop out, its baseball either you have or you don’t. Most of these players have been in the game at some level since they were 6 years old..At what point are they accountable

              Like

            2. Yes, because there are no examples in all of baseball history of players who take time to develop.

              Like

        1. There might be some benefit to sending Quinn back to Williamsport, to work on fielding and his left-handed hitting (he is striking over 30% of the time from the port side) . If Quinn can’t make it at shortstop, there is always center field. Shortstop being a primary fielding position, I would expect Galvis to be our most likely future shortstop anyway. He has increased his walk rate this season and has already equaled last season’s total of three home runs in less than half as many at bats. If he can continue to improve incrementally and keeps fielding well, Quinn will have to find another position anyway if he is to play with the Phillies.

          Like

          1. That’s a problem that’s at least four years away, though. Galvis could be traded at the 2016 deadline and Quinn could be the heir apparent, and a dozen other scenarios. I personally don’t think Quinn back to Williamsport is going to do much to help him. The same things you would work on to improve his defense at WIL will work at LKW. Not like he needs to move down because he can’t handle how good the pitching is right now or something. The SAL hitters don’t hit exponentially harder groundballs than guys in the NYPL will.

          2. Would make sense, but rather push him upward each level each year until AAA, then stay there till he gets it at the plate or in the field. Which would be age 22 and/or 23 for him if he stays for an additional year..

          1. Let’s hope there is no shoulder/muscular damage just general soreness for Morgan.

            Like

          1. I’m basing that judgement on 1)Morgan’s ranking relative to Joseph in the preseason prospect rankings; 2)the fact that the big club could use a healthy Morgan right now in the rotation, quite possibly; 3)an arbitrary judgement that the concussion costs Joseph development time, but it’s not an injury that threatens him long term, the way a shoulder injury would potentially threaten Morgan. I suppose there’s an argument that repeated concussions could be career-threatening to a catcher, since it’s a high-contact position. Hard to know at this point, the treatment of concussions is changing so fast right now.

            Like

            1. I’m more worried about Morgan, because I see shoulder woes as very serious potential career derailers, but a concussion that has you out a month also has future career impacts. These have a cumulative effect and this must have been a much more serious concussion than we were led to believe. Has Joseph had prior concussion problems? Catchers are going to encounter foul tips and also home plate collisions. It is not good news when a catcher starts piling up concussion and lesser head trauma hit points, as pro football players do. Gillies hasn’t really seemed quite the same since last season’s concussion.

              Like

            2. You make valid points on Morgan and obviously if he needs surgery, that would be the greater loss. Joseph however really needs to play if he’s going to get better. I’m sure the Phils were hoping he would have a great year and make their decision on Chooch an easier one.

  5. So this Severino Gonzalez kid looks mighty interesting. Anyone got a report on what he throws?

    1. He is the best reliever in Clearwater right now. There is now way they can send him back he is dominating High A hitters.

    2. If you recall he was something of a favorite on this site while posting gaudy numbers in the VSL last season. Small sample, but eerily similar results this season at Clearwater.

      1. With these numbers, they must be thinking of giving him some starts soon, right? He was starting in the VSL, so his arm is capable of it.

        1. To elaborate on what Steve mentioned, his IP have gone 1-2-3-3-3.2.

Every time he pitches I get a little bit more curious what this guy throws.

          1. Snood..if I remember from my SAT days and practicing ‘numerical sequencing’ with latest sequence of 1-2-3-3-3.2, next should be 4.1?

      2. He is an extreme control and command pitcher. Must have been pitching pretty well in XST to get bumped up to Clearwater though I am sure there were injuries and lack of prospects at Lakewood involved in the decision. FWIW he reminds me of Elizardo Ramirez. Whether he has enough stuff to survive at upper levels is an open question. His polish suggests he does not need the lower levels at least. I hope he starts soon as it would be nice to learn more about what we have.

        1. Does being an extreme command and control pitcher also mean his velocity and stuff suck or are they mutually exclusive in your commentary? Looking at some of his more indepth number this year, I found the following intriguing…

          – 1.2 GB/FB ratio… ground ball pitcher, yay!

          – 66% of his strikeouts this year are swinging and over the last two years (more significant sample size), it was actually 80%, even more impressive. This makes me think he’s got plus stuff/velo as well though i’ve got no scouting reports to back it up.

        2. Andyb- have you actually seen Gonzalez pitch or are you just guessing? If you’ve seen him, I’d be curious to know what he throws (even if it’s just pitch types and no gun readings).

          Like

          1. Have not seen him so these are educated guesses based in his stats and competition (and a little bit based on him not having coaches comment on him like they did several times with Yoel Mecias). Does not mean he has lousy stuff, but it also means the chances of him throwing greater than 90-92 are probably small. He also did not get a big bonus that we know of, so that is another data point. His stats just look like that of a pitcher that is more polished than his competition. It is rare at his age but it happens.

            Like

            1. Fair enough…I’m going to cross my fingers and hope he’s more 90-92 than Panama’s version of Tyler Cloyd.

      3. Very little information available on him, he was ranked the number 1 pitching prospect in the VSL by MLB Prospect Guide at the end of last year. Trying to find information on his velocity, will let ya’ll know if i find anything.

  7. Altherr is having a nice breakout year so far. Hope it continues. I’ve read scouting reports that said he fits better as a corner OF because of his height. But his stolen base numbers seem to indicate he has the speed to play center. And he would be so much more valuable as a CF. Wouldn’t it make sense to play him in center for now and have him switch to a corner later on if necessary?

    Like

    1. He’s been in CF for 18 of his 40 OF games so far this year. They haven’t given up on Hudson yet, so he gets most of his time there, (which is the only place his bat could possibly play). With Dugan needing to stay in RF to keep his value up, (whether that ultimately works or not), and Perkins needing time and also only able to play the corners, that’s a crowded OF.

      Like

    2. Think of Mayberry. Altherr can play CF and it gives him more value but he really looks and plays like a corner OF.

      Like

      1. Altherr has less power, more speed. His SB efficiency along with the ability to play CF, will probably be enough to get him to the major leagues.

        Like

      2. He is a natural CF that people try to push into the corners bcause of his size but he has the speed to stay in Centerfield. He doesn’t look as fast because of his long strides but running the 60 yards he is just as fast as Hudson. 6.51 and 6.52 respectively.
