A good week for Lehigh Valley who went 4-1,after their game against Rochester was suspended with Lehigh Valley ahead 6-5 in the fifth inning last night. The ‘Pigs now stand at 24-26 and in 3rd place of the Northern Division of the International League, 6.5 games behind division leading Pawtucket. The ‘Pigs short road trip continues with two more in Rochester on Wednesday and Thursday before returning home over the weekend for four games against Gwinnett.
‘Pigs Leaders:(Hitting):Cesar Hernandez is 9th in AB’s (185), 6th in hits (57); 6th in stolen bases (15) and 1st in triples (6);Jermaine Mitchell is 2nd in triples (4); Cody Asche is tied for third in triples (3) and is 10th in RBI’s (31).
Pitching:Ethan Martin is tied for 2nd in wins(5) and is 5th in walks (27); Jake Diekman is tied for 7th in saves (7); Tyler CLoyd is 3rd in HR allowed (9)
‘Pigs Prospects: Phillipe Aumont has had the same problems in his first few appearances with Lehigh Valley that he had with the Phils, the consistent inability to throw strikes. While yet to allow an earned run in his 3 appearances, Aumont has been consistently in trouble, working behind hitters.
Darin Ruf returned to the lineup last night after missing four games with a sore hand. While he did have 2 hits last night, Ruf had been struggling before the injury and is at .262/.339/.433 on the year with 5HR and 23RBI. Over his last 10 games, Ruf is hitting just .150 and is hitting .256 with 1HR and 8 RBI in May. Ruf’s fielding has continued to be better than expected.
Joe Savery had two consecutive miserable outings 2 weeks ago that have greatly inflated his ERA. Other than those outings, Savery has looked good, but those games have really taken the stats downward. Overall Savery is 3-1 with a 4.43 ERA and 2 saves in 17 games. Savery’s WHIP is 1.20 and the opposition is hitting just .213 against him overall. In his last 10 appearances, Savery is 2-1 with a 7.59 ERA. The two previously mentioned appearances are the only 2 in which Savery allowed earned runs in the last 10 games.
Cesar Hernandez has fallen off slightly hitting just .219 over the last 10 games but remains at .308/.383/.432 in 185 AB’s this year with 2HR 18RBI and 15 SB. Hernandez continues to do the little things very well and is playing a solid second base. In May overall, Hernandez is hitting .236, but has walked 16 times in 89 AB’s, an impressive rate.
Next week: Diekman, Martin, Rosenberg, Asche, Castro.
Notes: Tommy Joseph has begun baseball related activities in Clearwater recovering from his concussion, but still no projection on when he will be activated. He has now missed close to a month.
–Adam Morgan has now missed two starts as a result of shoulder soreness.
–Josh Fields has hit in 8 consecutive games.
–Ethan Martin lasted just 2.1IP on Tuesday evening, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned.
Probables: Wednesday: Valdes; Thur: Cochran; Fri: Miner; Sat: Rosenberg.
Transactions: Last Thursday, P Phillipe Aumont was optioned to Lehigh Valley and P Mike STutes was called up to take his spot on the Phillies roster. Last Friday, INF Michael Martinez has his contract purchased by Philsdelphia after Chase Utley was placed on the DL. Lehigh Valley added SS Troy Hanzawa from Reading to take Martinez’ roster spot. On Sunday, P BJ Rosenberg was optioned to Philadelphia. P Adam Morgan was placed on the DL with shoulder soreness to make room for Rosenberg.
Don’t leave out Susdorf when talking about AAA team, please. The guy can flat out hit.

Susdorf has gotten his share of attention on this site in the past, but if the intent of this space is to focus on players who might make an impact for the Phillies one day then Susdorf is justifiably omitted.

With Tommy Joseph out with a concussion, I’m surprised that Valle or Rupp weren’t called up. I would have promoted Valle and I’ll tell you why. He was upset when he was dropped to AA. He’s been moping at Reading. He needs a kick in the butt to get him going. Most people would say that you don’t promote a guy for not stepping up when he meets adversity but I think he can and should be read the riot act. It’s time to perform and show the Phils that you belong. Take your spot on AAA and you better prove you are worthy. Otherwise, you’re just organizational filler. He’s young but regressng so it’s time to put up or shut up.
It also solves a couple of problems. If Valle proves he’s a prospect, then he will be ready for call-up to the big club if needed. Lerud is still there and can fill in on the big club if needed. Rupp would get all the reps behind the plate @ AA and continue to show he’s at least a capable major league backup. Suomi or Stumpo can fill in anywhere and can be capable backups in AA.
I think in the beginning they didn’t think TJ would be out long but he’s been gone a long time now.

I think if the Phils realized that Joseph was going to be out as long as he has at the outset, Valle would have been up. I think your analysis is right on. He could only have enhanced his value by coming up.

Agree completely. They still can (and should) promote Valle to Triple A, especially considering Joseph has no set timeline.

As I explained a few days ago – the concussion is scary and must have been significant. As a catcher who inevitably will take balls to the head, they really have to make sure he is 100% or they could run into a big, permanent problems – big as in, he might have to stop catching and move to another position, thereby depriving him of about 70% of his value. You can never be too careful with concussions, so here’s to hoping that they were just being super careful (which, I suspect, is precisely what is going on). It would be nice, however, if they were less secretive. Information on their minor league injuries is completely withheld from the public. We’re on a “need to know” basis and they think we don’t need to know anything.
