Box Score Recap – 5/25/2013

Seth Rosin good, Mario Hollands good, Maikel Franco good, Cam Perkins good. How’s that for anaylsis? I’ll try to post the graphic later today, but here’s the link and a place to discuss.

Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB.

  1. Franco has cemented himself as the top position prospect in our system. Let’s see how high he can break into the top 100. Rosin has been a nice surprise.

    1. May depend on which top-100 we’re talking about. Traditionally Baseball America’s top 100 has been a lot like the College Football Rankings. You need to start off ranked high. It’s like in order to justify not having previously had a deserving prospect on their list(which was an oversight by them) they then shortchange the actual ranking. Chase Utley only appearing once on the list comes to mind and I think it was like 90th.

      1. I would be shocked if Franco didn’t make the Top 100. He’s 21 years old and leading the FSL in a bunch of offensive categories. And it’s not like he was not on the prospect radar screen before this, there’s been a lot of chatter about him for a couple years now. And draft position is pretty irrelevant in this case since he was an international signing.

        1. Oh I definitely think they’ll put him in the top-100. I was addressing more the ‘how high can he break’ into it part. I think unless someone starts off highly ranked by BA they have a tendency to force the player to gradually move up the ladder while also more slowly moving guys out that they originally ranked high.

I think they’ve been shortchanging Biddle since before he was drafted and every level he’s performed to finally start getting the attention he should have been getting all along. Meanwhile someone like Zach Lee continued to be trumpeted over him just because of how highly rated he was before the draft even though year for year/level for level Biddle was performing as good(or better) than he was in the minors.

          1. I don’t think Biddle was being shortchanged totally because of his predraft rankings in relation to players like Zach Lee. He has been discounted, due to reports that his velocity wasn’t high enough to be thought of as a top of the rotation starter. They’re not going to put a guy they think has ‘back of the rotation starter’ skills, high in the top 100, no matter how he performs. The reports of his velocity are better now.

          2. Lee pitched in the cal league and in aa last year. Even though his numbers weren’t as good as biddle, he was in a much tougher environment.

        2. Franco’s still 20.

It’s been surprising to see the organization change its thinking on pushing players aggressively through the minor league system. Franco is among the youngest hitters in his league, as are Asche and Hernandez in the International League (5th and 7th among batters with more than 50 plate appearances).

            1. You can get them from the leaderboards section of Minorleaguecentral. Though that site has Asche and Hernandez as 9th and 10th youngest in the IL. Tommy Joseph is 4th.

  2. Two good starts from Jonathan Musser at Lakewood. Very surprising, based on his first few years in the system. I hope he keeps it up. If he does well the rest of the year and progresses to Clearwater next season, that would put him back on prospect pace, with the college guys drafted in the upcoming draft.

    1. My biggest concern with Musser is his k/9 rate. He is big guy but either doesn’t have velocity or isn’t crafty. Hi K/9 this year is 3.60. Yoel Mecias is 10.10 and Shane Watson is 5.79. However Musser control is better. Still really early.

      1. There is no need to break out the peripheral stats, yet. It’s only been two games and 10 innings. Baby steps. He’s been terrible since he was drafted, but his debut in Lakewood has been encouraging, based on what he’s shown previously. If gets himself in a position to be promoted to Clearwater next year, he is in the same position he would be, if he would have chose to go to college, in 2010. That is all I was staying.

  3. Wish I knew how to get a scouting report, on Musser. love to know what velocity he is throwing at today, not two years ago,

      1. Or ask one of his teammates that tweets a lot. Or that guy from the paper in Asbury Park. Can’t remember his name.

  4. Aaron Altherr with 20 Ks in his last 10 games. For the season his K rate is almost as high as Ryan Howard’s.

    1. I have seen that too but he is such a good story this year. Maybe trying to do too much now that he is having his best start in years or pitchers have found weakness in his approach. Good players adjust.

    1. Guy who were there after being in Lakewood could go back – Brady was one. He’ll likely go back to Lakewood whenever they get him where he needs to be with his issues, whatever they were. Generally, most of the XST guys are headed to WIL or the GCL, though. Otherwise, they’d be in the full season leagues already.
