Another really nice outing from Jesse Biddle – 3H 4BB and 9K over 7 2/3 scoreless IP. Not bad by any stretch, but I could do without 4 walks. Seem like I’m nit picking, really. Shane Watson with 1H 2BB and 4K over 5 scoreless IP – nice effort there as well. He’s been kind of a mixed bag this year. The BB rate is fair, the K rate is low, and he’s giving up too many HR.
Roman Quinn gets to 20 steals, but commits his 16th and 17th errors. Those two numbers shouldn’t be that close. He is OPSing .857 in May, though, and 1.069 in his last ten games, (with 7BB and just 7K in those ten), so that’s helpful.

Looks like Quinn is an outfielder and I’m hearing scouts say the same.

I said that yesterday, the kid isn’t a shortstop, move him now and take the defensive, pressure off him

I am actually on the other side of this thought process. I am not too worried about the pressure, etc. And I am in no way saying moving to CF is “easy” but I say leave him at short and see what he can do. He’s only in Low A right now and we’ve all seen worse from a defensive perspective previously (the now famous Derek Jeter and his 50-some errors). There is always time to move him to CF. Again, not saying he could just hop in there and be great, but someone with his speed and previous CF experience, albeit HS experience, won’t have a real tough time making the move. Definitely more value as a SS so I would say let’s see how he does.
Thoughts?

Move him to 2nd since Freddy will be handling ss for a good many years quite well.

I agree with you, what’s the rush. Throwing errors (#18 today) are sometimes related to footwork and can be corrected. Since he was a high school OF, a future move wouldn’t be hard but a SS has so much more value.

WHAT! Most all shortstop errors are on THROWS. Most all professional…minors and majors….shortstops can catch ground balls. The hardest mechanism to teach is the accurate throw.
LikeLike
But most guys in baseball don’t have the range to play shortstop. If you put a below average range infielder with an already great arm at short, their value compared to a good shortstop would be much lower as their range would be so much worse. So yes, a lot of what you will eventually see from shortstops are throwing errors. Instincts and footspeed aren’t exactly things you can “teach” with any regularity – you can teach proper positioning and the footwork behind a good first step, and have a guy practice glovework until he’s blue in the face, etc., but the throwing mechanism as you call it, is the most teachable thing for a shortstop, no? It’s a whole group of things that can be taught, adjusted, etc., as opposed to range which is generally either present or not.

I think it is far too early to make that change. We need to remember in the minor leagues lighting is bad, infields are bad, and first basemen are sometimes bad at digging balls out of the dirt so the error numbers are usually higher, not to mention the part where he is learning a new position. If you look at his error rate this year, I believe he is making fewer errors per game in may than april. As long as that improvement continues, I think the Phils should press on with him at SS.

The kid is a natural center fielder. why try to make him a shortstop??? I still think he would move faster as a outfielder. his natural position. Galvis is our future shortstop. I know the lighting is bad, and infields are bad. just think you are trying to do too much with this kid. switch hitting, and postion change. I really believe he would move faster as a outfielder, and we could use a natural leadoff hitter, who steals bases.

I love Freddy, and I love Jimmy Rollins, and Roman Quinn is 3-4 years away from the majors. At this point in Quinn’s development, you try to maximize his value and don’t make position changes due to what’s happening at the big league level. I believe the Phils could get 5 more years out of Rollins if they really wanted to, albeit at declining production, and I believe Galvis is an everyday SS in the big leagues, but that is yet to be determined and proved so it would be foolish to start changing positions for guys now. Two years from now if Galvis is an all star SS, Rollins is gone, and Quinn is advancing fast and playing well, then maybe it is time to move him to CF.

Good post. I agree

Exactly. It’s way too early to be even talking about diminishing Quinn’s value by moving him to the outfield.

Bingo. Agreed.

He isn’t going to move through the system any faster in the outfield because the hit tool needs as much time as the defense. You keep at short because you have Tocci manning CF and you want to give them both ABs and the chance they can both stick at their current positions.
Quinn isn’t going to make the majors until 2016 at the earliest no matter what position he plays. By then Freddy will be into his arb years and a lot could have changed with the big league club. Quinn has much more value to this team at SS then in CF because of the number of CF in the system. Until it is time for him to make the majors you keep him at SS because it is a clearer path and it guarantees more ABs for all the prospects in the system along the way.

Freddy Galvis:
Total MiLB 524 Games, – 68- Errors, 2360-Chances, .971%
First 165 Games, 25-Errors, 813-Chances,.approx..970%
Roman Quinn:
105 Games, 44-Errors, 448-Chances, .902%
Quinn will probably get 2014 through Clearwater before they decide where he eventually goes.

Agree he’s got at least that long, unless their evaluations deem sometime before then that he’s not got the tools to ever be able to adjust. If he shows up in a boxscore in CF one day next spring or summer, we’ll know it’s over for him at short, but I really doubt it comes anytime before ’14.

I am confident that Quinn will learn SS because i am satisfied with how he is learning to switch hit. The numbers aren’t great now but he is showing improvement which is what you want in A-. Just leave him be for crying out loud. Everyone is in such a rush but this players development is far from over.

Roman has to show improvement at some point. If he continues the same issues through 2014, then I would think sometime in 2015—July/August- at Reading he will be transistioned to a position he is more comfortable with. Going from shortstop to the outfield is not as difficult, nor for that matter 2nd base.

I think you need to give it some time. He is exponentially more valuable as a shortstop. Also the fact that the two errors came on throws (as opposed to fielding) is supposedly an easier thing to fix. As to the people who want to move him off shortstop because we have Freddy Galvis that seems really short sighted. We’re all rooting for Freddy to be an everyday player, and he is still young, but he’s never shown that kind of bat on any level. Also Quinn is likely 3-4 years away when Galvis will be getting expensive. How about for a change the Phillies have a cheaper and possibly better replacement ready to go?

Wasn’t walding a SS when he was drafted? I know his frame is bigger, but y not?

The range is an issue especially as he gets larger. No one at the time he was drafted thought he could stick at short.

Agree completely, he does not have half the range at SS that Quinn, Galvis, or Rollins have.

Biddle is awesome…period. He’s going to be the Rocky Balboa of Phillies’ baseball….local boy with the “Eye of the Tiger”. Let’s just hope there’s no Uncle Paulie Pennino lurking out there.

Watson’s HRs came in bunches. He had 4 in one game and 2 in another. He’s had 2 really bad outings and guess what? They were when he gave up those 6 HRs. I’m a little concerned about the Ks being so low but I’m going to give him some time to settle in. I remember a guy named Pettibone who had the same issue. He had 84 Ks in 131 IP at Lakewood. The same K/9. I’d like to see Watson use the K to get out of trouble but I’ll take his pitching to contact… as long as that long ball doesn’t show up.

Any day that Watson and Biddle both throw shutout performances is a good day in our minor leagues. Those are both future rotation guys if they can stay healthy.

Nice to see John Musser with a good start the other day. Hope the same for Shull and Walter.

Watson with the good start yesterday. It’s still May, so maybe he turns it on like Biddle did in 2011. Struggle a little in April and May, then establish himself as a top prospect during June, July and August.

Do you guys think Biddle will be able to hit the rotation next year or is that rushing him?
LikeLike
He should be in the rotation before the end of 2014. The when depends on injuries, the 2013 trade deadline and offseason, his own progression, and team rebuild/contender status. He is likely going to be ready except for some AAA polishing by the end of the year and if I had to put an estimate on it he will be up probably right about a year from now given normal developmental ups and downs (saying that he could be ready by August this year or need a full year in AAA to work on the changeup and command)
LikeLike
He might be ready, but it might not be necessary to push it. Depending on what they do via trades, they could have Hamels, Lee, Kendrick and Pettibone penciled into the rotation next year. Martin and Morgan might be vying for that 5th spot. Biddle would start in AAA and then we’d see how it goes with trades, injury and performance.

Collier is above the Mendoza line–I think that’s a first for the season, right? Or at least the first time in a long time that it’s been true. It’d be nice if one of our two AA center field prospects managed to salvage his prospect status by the end of the season.

Sounds like Utley to the DL before the weekend series. Guessing Galvis plays 2B most days and Orr gets recalled, with Halladay going to 60 day DL to make room.

I’d like to see Cesar play but Galvis is the better option at this point and there is no reason to bring Cesar up to sit for 2+ weeks.

Given that Frandsen can play 2B for short bits they could get Ruf if they wanted. Orr would be if they wanted to let Hernandez get ABs as opposed to riding the bench

My hunch is they want Ruf to play everyday in AAA until he can play everyday in the bigs. I keep hoping the next week brings an 0 for 28 with 12 K’s for Delmon and a 12 for 28 with 4 homers and a few doubles for Ruf and they pull the plug on Delmon, move Brown to RF, and play Ruf in LF every day…..then I wake up.

Matt…..can the Phillies choose to go to a DH at Citizens Bank Park if they are playing an American League team, or does it have to be in an American League city only?

AL cities only. The choice rule I believe applies in AA/AAA
Off Topic – I personally would be in favor just to mess with people having DH in NL stadiums and pitcher batting in AL stadiums with interleague play.

Well, I, for one, am really encouraged by the recent progress of Roman Quinn. People forget how much the organization has thrown at this guy. He’s a former outfielder learning to play a really hard middle infield position, while, at the same time, learning how to switch hit. Take two steps back and think about that – both things, standing alone are really hard to do, but doing two at the same time – wow, you have to be very mentally tough and a great athlete to do that and Quinn, after struggling initially, seems to be doing it quite well.
My sense with Quinn is that he’s going to make it and may make it very big and quickly after he fully adjusts. Look for Quinn to solidify things this year and really take off sometime next year. He is still the player with the highest ceiling in the Phillies’ system.

I’ll add that it takes mental fortitude to not get down on yourself when you’re struggling at that new position and at the plate. Quinn has done both this year, yet seems to keep on plugging away, and is really gaining some momentum at the plate now. Think about how Franco struggled during the first half of last year, only to put it behind him and go on a tear the second half (and carry it into this year). I’m loving the tenacity Quinn is showing, and agree with everything stated above.

Looks like a wild game in Reading last night. Hewitt with a 3-run walk off jack in the bottom of the ninth in a game where it appears Jesse Biddle got a pinch-hitting appearance (I’m reading the tea leaves of the box score, so I’m not sure what happened). Congrats to Hewitt on hitting his first Eastern League HR in style.

Biddle got to PH and struck out looking. I don’t think they wanted to use a position player to PH in the 5th and Biddle has swung the bat well.
