Box Score Recap – 5/19/2013

Cam Perkins doesn’t have a hit in 4 games, but he does have 5 walks in those 4 contests. So that’s nice. And Austin Wright came back from the DL – I’m choosing to pretend that I didn’t see the results, and so I remain content that Austin Wright came back from the DL.

  1. looking forward to Williamsport starting in few weeks and seeing if Cousins is real prospect.

        1. Lol! And does he really think that the spell check feature on his computer would identify the word “Cousins” as the incorrectly spelled word and suggest “Cozens” as the correct word? Why do people care about such things when it comes to informal blog entries?

  2. 20 year old, Severino is up to 3 innings an outing. Are they stretching him out in CLW to prepare for Wlmsprt? Mario Hollands with another decent outing. Austin Wright aside, the Reading bullpen continues to help nobody out (the grammar is poor but it says it all).. Who woke Martinez up? 3 hits?

    1. I’m so impressed by him right now. In his career so far (34 games) he has struck out 122 batters and has only walked 9. Incredible. Also has only allowed 27 earned runs in that span too. I know the VSL isn’t the toughest competition but he dominated there and now is holding his own and then some so far in Clearwater. I would love if they just let him have a few starts in Clearwater. If he does well, great, if he struggles then send him to Williamsport. I know that they most likely won’t let him get the starts in Clearwater but I think he is too good for short season ball.

    2. And his outing are separated by 5 and 4 days his previous outings. I suspect you’re right but I’d contend that he’d be starting for Clearwater

      1. Not to my knowledge. There might be some limited ones by anyone in Clearwater (and they are small sample size, especially with him working out of the pen), but it is extremely rare to get reports from the VSL on anyone but giant bonus guys.

  3. At least the Pigs didn’t get carved up by some bum. Sickles had Kyle Gibson as the 62nd best prospect in baseball preseason, so there’s that.

    1. Ahh, the silver lining. Doesn’t expain the pitching but with 3 hits you’re not going to win many games.

Jermaine Mitchell has some of the weirdest stats. He K’s in nearly every game. He also gets a hit or a BB in nearly every game. It’s feast or famine with him. Not a prototypical leadoff man but he’s keeping the spot warm for Gillies. Now if we could get Gillies going… we’d be doing something.

      And one more thing… Susdorf.

      1. 36th round pick – fastball 89-91, secondary pitches were fringy. Pure projection guy that scouts thought would do well in the college programs. He didn’t add much velocity but the slider and changeup took big steps forward. He was supposed to be polished and quick moving and he made AAA in his first full year. Blew out his arm the next year and needed Tommy John surgery and luckily (for the Twins) has returned to form quickly.

He is a slightly positive in the end cautionary tale on thinking college guys will get there quickly as anything can happen. He was one of those cases that was going to go to school because it made sense for his career, but you take a flyer and sometimes you get Jarred Cosart to sign.

  4. The biggest mystery to me is Jim Murphy. I realize he is 28 this year and just seems to always hit. But if the Phillies have not plans for him, why is he taking up a roster spot.

    1. I am not there but for the most part players like Murphy are on the roster for a couple of reasons:
      – They act like an extra coach (hitting/fielding/practice/preparation)
      – They are a parent and mentor to younger prospects
      – They make the team better on the field
      – They don’t block an actual prospect
In other words his biggest contributions are off the field and he is an important part of the development process. The way prospects are these players tend to be 4th/5th OFs, first basemen, and catchers

    1. Roman Quinn is making a ton of errors. Revere isn’t the answer, why not move Quinn back to center, and galvis stays at short.???

      1. No need to move Quinn until he gets to AA or AAA. He can pick up CF quickly. Plus you have Tocci in CF as well. Can’t really fast-track Quinn either with him learning how to switch hit
