Ethan Martin went 7 and pitched pretty well – he gave up 8H and 2BB, struck out 6k. Cody Asche went deep for his fourth of the year. Nick Hernandez with a very nice bounce back from a poor start last time out – 1R, 3H, 1BB, 8K in 6 IP. Brian Pointer with his 14th steal out of 16 tries, Roman Quinn with his 19th out of 24. The SAL leader, Kannapolis (White Sox) 2B Micah Johnson, has 37 in 44 tries, in 36 games. I think that’s worthy of a “wow”…or maybe a “whoa”.

Can someone remind me, which VSL guys should i be following?

Rivero and Isava are the big bonus guys

At least Rivero and Isava. Other than those two, I’m waiting to see any other 18 or under guys put up some numbers.

Not sure why Wilson Garcia was not brought stateside. Good hitting results last year and plays some catcher.

Freddy ‘Pete’ Zarrilla is a big kid with pretty good power. There were some nice things said about him when he signed.

He needs to start mashing yesterday.

He’s been hitting very well since almost the start of the year.

Kyrell Hudson got robbed of a possible triple in the 13th, was listening to the extra innings on the radio. Too bad, might have won the game and would have given him 4 hits on the night.
Nice to see Gillies heating up.

And Hudson had an assist. I can’t excited just yet but they sent him to EST but a couple of days and he was right back. He’s hit pretty well since. Was the EST trip a wake up call or did someone see something that needed adjusting? Let’s give him another 100 ABs to see if something’s changed.

Though I still think he is a backup, Cesar Hernandez with another extra base hit and a walk. Still too early (wait until after trade deadline), but I’d like to see him get some time at SS before the season is out.
Nick Hernandez is a great story but until he gets to AA I am very skeptical of his majors profile. However, I am thrilled he has made it back and has to be a great influence on the organization.
It would be awesome if Gillies is heating up with his revamped power stroke. Still happy he is playing every day. I like that Phillies are keeping Collier in CF to evaluate.

Cesar’s 2 SB also gives him 12 in 14 attempts … he’s really doing it all this year.

When you say backup? Your saying he cant start for any team. or he is blocked by Utley?Because what I have read[never seen him play] he has a nice glove.hits and has some speed. sounds like a solid prospects to me.

I speak of Hernandez as a backup since I think most teams would want a higher OPS hitter from 2B. I think his BA will drop (BABIP too high) and BB will drop (due to lack of power) . However, his speed (his steal percent is much better this year) and above average glove should add some more value.
For Phillies, I think they need to keep Utley but also need a quality backup. Having Hernandez and Galvis as controlled backups is certainly a better option than the Pete Orrs of the league.

“I think most teams would want a higher OPS hitter from 2B”
I see a decent amount of people on here saying this and things like it, but I don’t really get it.

Only 16 2B had an OPS > .700 last year, only 12 the year before, and 11 in 2010. In a couple years, I think Cesar could do that. The offensive bar at 2B is pretty low. Even if he’s just a 2/3 WAR/yr guy, that’s still valuable. You don’t need stars at every position.

+1. Offensive numbers across the league are not exactly impressive these days. I think Hernandez has a solid chance to be a regular as long as his defense is above average.
LikeLike
The question those is whether he projects to have that in the majors. I have my doubts. What if he’s (say) .270/.320/.350 with average defense? Add in some speed and he would be far from the worst second baseman in the league, but that’s still not exactly what a contender aspires to at second base.
I see him as a real prospect now, but it’s hard for me to get TOO excited about him. I see a 2/3 WAR guy as his upside, IF everything breaks right for him. Which could happen, but isn’t guaranteed to.
Of course in the short run, unless Utley’s contract demands are absurd, Utley will and should stick around (and if not, Galvis gets the job). The simple fact is that Utley is not only their best hitter at this point, but (incredible as it sounds), maybe their only good hitter. This team without Utely rivals the Marlins for the worst offense in the league.

As surprising as it is to most of us, you have to include Michael Young and his 122 wRC+ in there amongst our good hitters. By that measure he’s actually (slightly) better than Utley.
LikeLike
Yeah, but (a) that doesn’t include double plays; and he has grounded into a bunch, (b) he may well regress some, and (c) he won’t be on the team anyway in 2014.
He’s been better than I expected, though.

I think people are looking for Utley II and Rollins II, but they really don’t exist. The argument is always that we lack power in the OF and at 3B, so we need it up the middle. It doesn’t work that way. Utley and Rollins are rare beasts. We will simply have to grow or acquire corner OF with power, so that not that much burden is placed on the middle IF. Galvis and Hernandez can be just fine, although they obviously won’t make up for the offense we are used to getting from Rollins. They will be a lot cheaper, freeing up $ for a corner OF. Maybe Ruf can be that guy. Brown is displaying more power. CF is a black hole. Perhaps that is where more power must be added. Franco will have power at 3B. Asche will have more 3B power than we have seen of late. It would be nice if Howard returned to being a power 1B, but that seems unlikely. The way to keep sliding is to reject perfectly good cheap alternatives like Galvis and Hernandez. They can be a very good defensive DP combo with about average offense.

I see a slightly bigger Jose Altuve in Cesar Hernandez. Hopefully it turns out that way.

Not often that the catcher and 1B switch places in a game.

It happens a lot in the VSL. In the VSL it seems everyone is a catcher or SS. The roster lists 5 catchers and 3 SS. There’s one guy, Grenny Cumana, who’s listed as an IF but he plays SS too. Did you see the details on Grenny? He’s listed at 5’5″ tall. He’d make JRoll look like a giant.

Carlos Tocci is starting to show just enough signs of life that they may not need to demote him. They probably will anyway, but his average in May is up to .264. The problems he’s facing are a low ISO and BABIP. The BABIP might be bad luck or being over-matched physically. If it’s the latter, it’s possible he’s making adjustments.

It’s easy to forget that he turns 18 in August. We all know that he’s young for his level, but being in A ball at age 17 is crazy.

Yeah I was talking about this yesterday. His OBP was something like .333 over his last 10 games and his OPS was like .650 which is slightly better than what he put up in the GCL. I’m with you if he keeps on this track that they should let him stay at Lakewood.

He’s got four doubles in his last 5 games … He’s definitely starting to show a little ability to hit the gaps and use his speed. His BB/K rates are both better than they were in GCL (5.6/16/8 last year, 6.2/14.4 this year), and the ISO is almost tripled (.021 last year, .052 this year). He’s definitely holding his own and should have the chance to play out the year in Lakewood.

He may play out the year there, just because there is nobody to replace him in CF. That is, unless Jonathan Knight or Jiandido Trump are showing something in Extended Spring.

Pointer has played it a little in the past, but doubt he gives you the defense Tocci can.
LikeLike
Yeah, Tocci is doing well enough that the only reason for him to be sent down is if there’s a legit prospect who’s farther along to replace him. I’ve held any excitement about Tocci at bay to this point but it’s getting tougher to do that now that he’s sprinkling in some XBHs and holding a good K/BB rate.

I agree with this. Although, Pointer could move to CF if Cozens is brought up to LKW in RF.

Who is this guy Yoel Mecias? When you look at the numbers, he doesn’t jump out at you but look at his last 4 starts. 4 runs in his last 19 innings. He has 22 Ks and 8 BBs in those starts. Most interesting thing about him is.. wait for it… he’s younger than Larry Greene, Quinn and Watson. He’s the youngest guy at Lakewood. He’ll be 19 until October. He’s a 6’2″ lefty to boot. He is from VZ and started playing last year in the GCL. Was he a bonus baby? Anybody have eyes on him?

Oops, forgot about Tocci. 2nd youngest guy @ Lakewood.

He was Baseball America’s sleeper prospect for the system, coming into the season. He’s been discussed before. Supposedly has a big fastball for a young LHP.

It isn’t huge velocity, but certainly plus from the left side (more 90-92 touching 93-94), which is a little less than he was showing in Fall Instructs. He has some semblence of control and a changeup that looks like it has at least plus potential. He is a slight guy so they are likely suppressing his innings and he will probably wear down at some point this summer. But he is a definite prospect and a guy to keep an eye on.

Asche doing what he always does – settling in and excelling. Improved walk rate and good fielding reviews are encouraging.

If the Phillies are falling and out of it by mid-July, maybe Michael Young is moved to a contender and Asche is brought up to finish out the year in Philly.
