Box Score Recap – 5/16/2013

Maikel Franco with two homeruns in his last one game – if he keeps up that pace he’ll hit several hundred this year. Of course, over a larger sample, it’s closer to like the mid-twenties, I guess. Which I’m still ok with…just lacks that certain something.

  1. Castro with three walks…that’s awesome to see from the free swinger. His patience is really the only thing holding him back from being a really serviceable 4th outfielder. Guess its something he’s working on!

  2. Not sure what Franco is lacking? Guy is going to move up charts with a solid yr. Also with his age what is not to like? Lwood and Cwater really are getting some prospects starting to pick game up. Still a few yrs away, by encouraging.

    1. he meant that it sounds a little better if francos on pace for a few hundred homers then 20

    2. I guess if we were nitpicking, he lacks speed and I would like to see him take a fewmore walks (which should happen once he starts really getting pitched around). But that really is nitpicking. He looks like a fatastic prospect for a 23 year old, much less a 20 year old.

With Asche the heir apparent for the time being, I would have no problem if they kept Franco at CLW for the year.

    3. As others have said the speed is a factor (I have heard reports that it is more in the 30-35 range than the 20 it was before), the defense is average to slightly above, and he is a free swinger who could walk more (it probably would come with more strikeouts).

If those sound nitpicking and minor, they are. He lacks a true elite tool as well (but he does have what looks like to be 3 tools that are 60 or better and another at least average tool) and it puts him just outside the elite group of prospects and major league profiles.

  3. Tyler Cloyd didnt do a good job taking the bad taste out of my mouth from Adam Morgan’s last start… Any one know what Gabriel Arias’ stuff looks like this year? Is he a control guy like Cloyd?

  4. Gregori Rivero off to a good start in the VSL which is nice since he was one of our bigger signings. 6 hits in his first 14 ABs, including a double and a triple. Still a very small sample size and has only seen right handed pitching but it’s encouraging none the less

  5. Three comments today…

    1. Franco is a beast and has a legitimate ceiling as a star position player.
    2. Ruf is really starting to concern me with the K rate… he’s been striking out far too much this year and really hurts his batting average potential.
    3. I’m starting to feel a little better about Larry Greene, his K’s are way down as of late. I’d still like to see some power (7 HR’s this year would be fine) though before I’m comfortable.

    1. Franco might actually be a good hitter with power. With the good arm I really hope he can stay at 3B. Normally AA is the real proving ground for prospects so it will be interesting to see if there is a weakness in his swing that is exploited at that level.

Ruf’s K’s do not bother me if he shows significant power and still has a high walk rate. He is not a guy who will get on by hitting the ball on the ground. From his minor league profile he was a high average hitter with just average power so he might be able to be a better contact hitter when needed to drive in runs.

Larry Greene still worries me from the reports from his manager. It appears that his high walk rate is that he does not recognize pitches so he just waits for poor control pitchers to just miss the stike zone. With this info, I am more likely to predict a career like Hewitt: massive strikeouts with good raw power as I expect his walks to drastically drop as pitchers improve at higher levels.

      1. Hewitt didn’t ever walk enough for them to drop drastically- his 6.9% so far this year would be a new career high, up from 5.4% all the way back in rookie ball. I find Greene’s K rate alarming too, but when a guy walks over 20% of the time Hewitt’s a poor comparison.

  6. What Quinn has done lately has gone under the radar as he breaks out of his slump.
Over the past 10 games: .325/.413/.450 and over his last 7 games he has 4BB and 5K.

On the season the line still could use some work but .237/.312/.338 with 3 HRs 18 SB 5 CS. The strikeout rate is still very high but there is some definite power in the swing. Two of the homeruns were out of the park including one at Lakewood which is a really hard place to hit HRs. It is still going to take a while but this is not an empty bat speed guy, but a talented hitter still working on his game.

    1. To be honest, I’m a wee bit skeptical. His prospect status has dropped a little this year for me, but the good news is there’s plenty of time for that opinion to rebound.

To be short, I was literally praying for his slash line to improve as he got more comfortable switch hitting, it just hasn’t yet happened (or maybe it’s happening now, though it’s too early to say for sure.). Instead it’s gotten worse. Additionally his fielding, while not the end-all-be-all (eg jimmy rollins example) hasn’t improved at all so far this year.

  7. I suspect that Carlos Alonso is not a legitimate prospect and I’d rather M.Martinez not even been in the organization but WHY are both of those guys leading off?
Even if batting order matters (it shouldn’t) and the organization wants Hernandez, Asche, Ruf to ‘learn’ the 2nd, 3rd, 4th batting order roles then bat someone like Castro leadoff, At least he has some speed and should try to work on more OBP.
Why not but everyone else up one spot. I figure keeping Perkins behind Franco is for ‘protection’ but at this point I’d like to see how Franco hits when being ‘pitched around’ (if that even happens in the minors).

    1. Perkins has only hit behind Franco couple of games. Chris Serritella has been Franco’s “protection”.

  8. AAA hitters clearly have Tyler Cloyd figured out. Time to send him back to the majors where he’s enjoyed success.

  9. I kinda hope the Phils let Tocci stay in Lakewood. He’s not tearing it up or anything but it seems to me like he is starting to figure things out. His slugging is still pitiful right now but his OBP is at .333 over his last 10 games and his .658 OPS in that same time is a little better than what he did at the GCL. If he keeps this upward trend going they shouldn’t drop him back.

    1. I was at the Lakewood game last night, although didn’t arrive until the 4th inning – thank you American Airlines. Tocci had a big game – his double was a first pitch fastball he jumped all over and hit a smash against the base of the fence in LF. He worked a walk earlier in a 8-9 pitch at bat, and fouled off some tough breaking balls. Another at bat he grounded out to second after getting behind 0-2, and working the count to 2-2 before making the out. He also made a diving catch in CF.

Larry Greene’s double was a bomb hit into the right center field gap, I thought it was gone off the bat but one hopped the fence, not sure if the wind was blowing in or the ball just wasn’t carrying, or I just misread it off the bat. I always envisioned LGJ as looking like Ryan Howard but he’s much shorter and a bit stockier. I was actually impressed with his speed as well as big Art Charles – for big men they both move pretty good. And Roman Quinn is fast, real fast.

      1. It’s been noted here before, but Larry Greene was a fairly big-time linebacker recruit for football, and IIRC had a few offers from SEC schools. Those programs don’t recruit linebackers that are slow.

  10. Cesar Hernandez’ BABIP is correcting itself, but that’s fine. His numbers are still good and his 9% walk rate is significantly better than it’s been in previous years. As long as he keeps his k-rate in check the hits will start coming again.

  11. phillies have sent valdes to AAA and recalled b.j. rosenbrg. will he be the fifth starter? glad they kept defratus.

    1. Phillies don’t need a starter until Tuesday the 21st (off days allow them to bring Hamels back on Monday. Currently that lines up with Cloyd

      Like

    2. Really, Rosenberg? I guess they needed a “multi innings” guy. Also, Durbin should have been let go long before Valdes.

      Like

      1. Rosenberg has his issues to be sure, but he’s infinitely better than Valdes and Durbin – at least he has a major league arm and a little upside. Valdes and Durbin are veterans who currently stink and project to get worse over time. Yikes!!!!

        Like

        1. Rosenberg stinks too. all three of these guys shouldn’t be on a major league roster and Aumont is right behind them. Rosenberg and Aumont have really good arms. but at there age its time to let go. both have no idea how to pitch.

          1. At their age? So in roccom world if a guy hits 25 years old and hasn’t had MLB success it’s time to cut them loose?

            Like

            1. In the case of aumont why is he on this roster. he isn’t a major league pitcher right now. has not a clue how to pitch. as I stated him and Rosenberg . have good arms. but cant get people out. and its not getting anybetter. tell me why you would think either one of these guys should be in the Phillies bullpen??? they right now are at best/ triple a organization fillers.

              Like

        2. At least Valdes is striking guys out and keeps the walks at bay. A lot of the fly balls he’s given up have left the park this year and that will probably normalize over the long haul. I agree that I’d rather have Rosenberg than Durbin but that’s not saying much.

          Like

          1. Rosenberg stinks and is bad as Durbin. Since they sent Valdes down, they must believe they need the additional RH pitcher.

    1. One surprise….everyone is acclaiming Tim Anderson,ss, as high pick, BA has him in the thirties.

      1. Considering Baseball America hasnt seen him at all and its not like theyre the goto highschool juco source (perfect game). He wasnt even in the top 250 before before Summer Ball last year. The top 250 is awful college heavy which speaks to where Baseball America is at Draft Coverage wise. Outside of the top 50 or so players.

  12. From the BA hot sheet and chat. Franco made the team photo

Maikel Franco, 3b, Phillies. The breakout year for Franco continues. After hitting two home runs yesterday, the 20-year-old is up to .291/.341/.557 in 38 games in the high Class A Florida State League.

Matt (Madison): Cameron Perkins continues to mash in the FSL. The biggest concern is that he is putting everything in play (0 BB 3K) over his last 10 games. What do we make of it?

Matt Eddy: The early success of Phillies corner OF Cameron Perkins (sixth round, Purdue, 2012) is a testament to the organization’s area scouts’ ability to identify college players who are ready to step into pro ball and contribute right away. They had similar success with 2011 draft picks Adam Morgan and Cody Asche, both of whom are in Triple-A today.

    1. I have tried for a couple of weeks to get some opinion on Perkins and it was good to get an answer this week. Good to see a positive opinion on both Perkins and the organization.

    2. I dont see it at all with Perkins. 0 plate discipline, plays a corner, isnt a special defender or runner and lacks power. The babip normalizes and youre left with a very average minor leaguer.

      Like

      1. I would say it is zero plate discipline. It isn’t that he swings at everything. He makes a ton of contact and doesn’t really work pitchers, but there isn’t a huge strikeout problem to worry about right now

        Like

        1. to me that sounds like a great org guy. A lot of contact would be fine if he was a catcher, CF even Mid Inf. But hes a corner outfielder and those positions require some sort of special bat.

            1. He is currently blocked up the chain, I don’t think the defense is good enough to be a regular but he can certainly start occasionally

              Like

            2. I think it is a little premature to say Perkins can play all 4 corners. The Phillies already moved him off his original position (3rd), and down the defensive chain.
And he is on a pace for about 20 errors in the OF this year.
