Box Score Recap – 5/14/2013

The VSL team gets into action, and one of the guys we ought to be watching, Gregori Rivero, (who was DHing but signed as a catcher), got off to a good start with a 3-5 and a double and scored a run. The other guy I’m paying attention to, Willerker Isava, was 1-3 with 2ks. Both of these guys were given 6 figure bonuses in 2012, Rivero was reported at $110k, Isava at $200k.

This is my 1 year Box Score Recap anniversary. Thanks to Gregg for involving me last year, and thanks to you all for checking in every day or as often as you do. I hope I sometimes make you crack a smile and maybe laugh out loud every now and again, and also that someday one of you, (or frankly, many of you), will remember me in your Last Will and Testament with a monetary sum equivalent to, say, that of young Willerker Isava’s signing bonus.

  1. Happy anniversary Brad. This daily review has been one of the better additions to the blog.

    1. Thanks for a good year, Brad! I find your comments quite amusing, and appreciate all the effort you’ve put in. But you’re not getting a dime from me when I pass, ’cause I’m giving all of it to the Tomas Perez statue fund.

      1. I disagree about Brads comments. I mean one time he is giving pork shoulder cooking recipes when we should be talking about Roy Halladays shou….. ooohh i get it now, ok Brad is hilarious.

  2. Great to see Quinn getting some multi hit games. The Clearwater lineup is the bright spot of the system. Dugan with a big game, this CLW lineup is going to have 4 guys deserving of a mid season promotion.

  3. Appreciate your work Brad, thanks. On a separate note, I’ll finally be able to attend some games for the first time this year – trying to squeeze in one game in Lakewood, Reading, and LV in the next week. I’ll try to capture some game notes and any discussion points I have with scouts or others, if I’m able to. Let me know if I should post in comments or send to you via email to post.

  4. Cesar appears to be coming to Earth somewhat … .238/.333/.333 in his last 10. Meanwhile, Dugan just keeps on hitting, doesn’t he?

    1. The weird thing about Cesar is he’s hit in 11 of his last 12 games but his average has come down from .375 to .324. No one expected him to hit .375 on the year but he’s still hitting the ball. He’s not in anything you could call a slump. His K/BB is better over the last 10 games (8/6).

  5. morgan getting knocked around again. he’s really hit some sort of wall. i can see why cloyd was recalled instead of morgan.

    1. what the hell is going on with morgan. thought he was for real. but now the way he is getting rock. really cast some doubt in his ability.

    2. His numbers suggest he’s not far off from where he was in the same amount of innings in Reading last season during his callup. His H/9 (8.6 in REA, 8.7 in LHV), WHIP (1.262 REA, 1.278 LHV) and BB/9 (2.8 REA, 2.8 LHV) are virtually identical. His K/9 (7.3 REA, 6.6 LHV) is down slightly, but not alarmingly. The big difference is that he’s giving up more HR — 2 last season vs. 5 so far this year. I’m going to go with the theory that he’s had a little bad luck with giving up long balls at the wrong time until I see otherwise. I’m not worried about him.

  6. It’s a little unusual to see six figure bonus signees in the VSL… but then this past year there were 5 guys the Phillies signed to six figure bonuses and these are two of the smallest bonuses of that mix. I think the higher profile/more money guys are still in extended and likely heading to GCL?

    1. They sent Sergio Velis (100K) to the VSL in 2012. They sent Miguel Nunez (300K) to the DSL, for the 1st month in 2010. So it is not unprecedented that they send a 6 figure signee to those leagues. You are right though, that most of those guys go to the GCL.
Unfortunately for Gregori Rivero, they signed a guy that plays the same position (Grullon), to a 500K bonus, so he has the GCL spot.
