Around the System–Outfield

A look at the outfield around the system.  Next up…starting pitching.

Lehigh Valley
Leandro Castro, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2006; .267/.300/419 in 105 AB’s; 3HR 12RBI; 8SB; 5%bb/15% k rates; .381 vs. LHP, .238 vs. RHP, .292 with RISP. 27 games in the OF without an error; 2 OF assists; Castro is the player I have been most impressed with this year with Lehigh Valley. He has gotten his K rate under control which was his biggest issue.  He is simply a clutch player both at bat and in the field.  Needs to work on his consistency.

Darin Ruf, 26, Phils 20th round pick in 2009; .270/.341/.487; 5HR 18 RBI; 10%bb/25% k rates; .188 vs. LHP, .287 vs. RHP, .182 with RISP. 21 games in the OF with 1 error (.976); 1 OF assist; 8 games at 1B without an error;  Ruf’s fielding has been much better than anticipated. With the bat, he has been wildly inconsistent, but his bottom line isnt bad. He does need to step it up to get back to the show.

Jermaine Mitchell, Signed as a free agent in 2012; .250/.351/.384 in 64 AB’s; 2HR 7RBI; 4SB; 12%bb/26% k rates; 19 games in the OF with 1 error (.972); 1 OF assist. I like the way Mitchell plays, all out all the time.  That said, he has been either phenomenal or awful in most games.  Needs to be more consistent.

Steve Susdorf, 27, Phils 19th round pick in 2008; .293/.341/.425 in 41 AB’s; 0HR 9RBI; 7%bb/12%k rates. 11 games in the OF with one error; 1 OF assist. Susdorf should start seeing more playing time with Gillies departure for AA. The guy can flat out hit. Fielding remains the issue.

Zach Collier, 22, Phils 1st round pick in 2008; .177/.234/.292 in 113 AB’s; 2HR 11 RBI; 3SB; 6%bb/30% k rates; .250 vs. LHP, .161 vs. RHP; .103 with RISP. 28 games in the OF with an error; 3 OF assists.   Put simply brutal at the plate, excellent in the field.

Tyson Gillies, 24, Acquired from Seattle in 2009; .147/.264/.213 in 75 AB’s between AA and AAA; 1HR 3RBI; 4SB’; 14%bb/18% k rates. 22 games in the OF with 1 error (.974); 1 OF assist. The lone bright spot for Gillies is his walk rate.  Other than that, simply very disappointing.

Anthony Hewitt, 24, Phils 1st round pick in 2008; .247/.310/.377 in 77 AB’s; 0HR 5RBI; 7SB; 8%bb/33%; .438 vs. LHP; .197 vs. LHP; .250 with RISP..143 over last 10 games. 23 games in the OF with 1 error; (.977); 4 OF assists; After a start that got people talking, Hewitt has now dropped back to slightly better than most people believed he would perform.

Derrick Mitchell, 26, Phils 23rd round pick in 2005; .244/.309/.360 in 86 AB’s; 1HR 6RBI; 4SB; .211 vs. LHP, .254 vs. RHP, .238 with RISP, 9% bb/20% k rates.  26 games in the OF without an error; 5 OF assists. Mitchell is capable of much better. His playing time is increasing, so getting regular AB’s should help. Mitchell has played an excellent OF.

Clearwater

Aaron Altherr, 22, Phils 9th round pick in 2009; .336/.394/.582 in 122AB’s; 4HR 22RBI; 8SB; .214 vs. LHP, .372 vs. RHP, .500 with RISP (15-30); 9%bb/24% k rates; 29 games in the OF with 1 error (.981); 3 OF assists.  ALtherr has been outstanding this year, hitting for average, power and showing his speed. I expect the Phils to be aggressive with him as they will have to make a 40 man decision on him this year.

Cameron Perkins, 22, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .357/.382/.581 in 129 AB’s; 3HR 20RBI; 2SB; 4%bb/11%k rates; .412 vs. LHP, .337 vs. RHP, .419 with RISP. 19 games in the OF without an error; 2 OF assists. There is an expectation that a college player from a large Division one school will succeed at High A, but the numbers Perkins has put up are eye-catching.  He will make it very difficult for the Phils not to promote him with another 100 productive AB’s.

Kyrell Hudson, 22, Phils 3rd round pick in 2009; .149/.210/.162 in 74AB’s; 0HR 2RBI; 4SB; 4%bb/40% k rates; .190 vs. LHP, .132 vs. RHP, .100 with RISP. 19 games in the OF with 1 error (.980); 1 OF assist. The strikeout rate says it all. Hudson is overmatched.

Brock Stassi, 23, Phils 33rd round pick in 2011; .250/.289/.361 in 36 AB’s; 0HR 3RBI; 5%bb/24% k rates. 6 games in the OF without an error; 6 games at 1B with 1 error. Stassi has been fine in a very limited role.

Kelly Dugan, 22, Phils 2nd round pick in 2009; .310/.383/.429 in 42Ab’s; 1HR 6RBI; 7%bb/27% k rates. 8 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist.  Dugan spent the first three weeks of the season on the DL but has started strong over the last 2 plus weeks.

Lakewood

Brian Pointer, 21, Phils 28th round pick in 2010; .204/.322/.296 in 98 AB’s; 1HR 8RBI; 12SB; .200 vs. LHP, .205 vs. RHO, .259 with RISP; 9%bb/27% k rate; 28 games in the OF with 3 errors (.923); 2 OF assists. I have always been a Pointer fan but he simply can’t seem to solve Low A pitching. Still very early in the season, but last years problems seem to have reinvented themselves. Among organization leaders in SB’s.

Carlos Tocci, 17, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .219/.255/.248 in 105 AB’s; 0HR 7RBI; 3SB; 4%bb/14% k rates; .273 vs. LHP, .205 vs. RHP, .265 with RISP. 29 games in the OF with 2 errors (.975); 3 OF assists. Tocci is making contact which is the most important thing for a 17 year old at this level.  I expect Tocci to drop back to Williamsport when their season begins, but optimism should reign more than alarm.

Zach Taylor, 21, Phils 12th round pick of 2012; .234/.265/.362 in 47 AB’s; 0HR 0RBI; 4%bb/39% k rates. 12 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist.  Not many AB’s, but when he has played Taylor has not been productive.

Larry Greene, 20, Phils 1st round pick in 2011; .157/.348/.216 in 51 AB’s; 0HR 6RBI; 22%bb/42% k rates.  16 games in the OF with 4 errors (.800); 1 OF assist. Greene missed the first several weeks getting himself in shape and it hasn’t been pretty since he arrived in Lakewood.  The lone bright spot is a very high walk rate but his strikeout rate is Hewittlike. His fielding has been fairly brutal as well.

  1. I wasn’t expecting much but I like what Castro’s done so far also. His walk rate is up from last year and the year before, K rate is under control, nice job on the bases. Still just a 4th OF type but he seems to have a decent shot of reaching that level.

    1. Castro has some intrigueing potential that he could be taken in the December Rule 5

  2. Don’t believe Tocci will drop back if his numbers continue at this pace or improve. If they worsen any, I absolutely agree but I know the desire of the organization is to keep him at Lakewood if he proves he can handle it by the time short season starts.

    1. At some point in Tocci’s development, he will need to repeat a level, for if not, I seriously do not think the Phillies will start his service time in the majors at age 21. Cannot remember the last time the Phillies brought up a 21-year old tp start a season, though Rollins was 21 when he was a September call-up in 2000.

      1. I don’t agree that he will HAVE to repeat a level, although he very well may. His primary development need is power, and in his case that’s not about anything more than his size and strength. His maturity, instincts, pitch selection, defense, etc are all very advanced for his age and if he can hold his own (minus the power) at each level there’s no reason he shouldn’t keep advancing. If the power comes, it will come. Sending him down to Williamsport won’t lead to him hitting for power. Having said that, if his avg dips below what it is now and his bb and k rates deteriorate then I would absolutely send him down.

        1. So you think the Phillies will start him with the club in April 2017 as a 21-year old?

    1. The way I see it, Susdorf’s fielding is only part of the problem. The other part is his lack of corner outfielder level power, which would relegate him to a CF role. Does he have the speed to play there? I have never seen him play, but judging by his career triples and SB stats, he does not.

  5. First off, thanks again for this wonderful site!

I was wondering if it may be a good idea to add LD% to the stats, seeing as how it, along with bb% and k%, can give us a good idea of who has has the makings of a good hitter. As an aside, what kind of LD% is considered good, very good, and elite?

  6. Is Jiwan James injured? I remember hearing something about him at toward the end of Spring Training but I forget what it was.

  7. Collier is the biggest disappointment to me here. And hoping that Altherr’s not teasing the way Collier apparently did last year.

  8. How good is Castro in CF? I think he’d be competing with Mayberry for the 4thOF role. Not sure he’d do any better than Mayberry so I do not see anything more than a Sept call-up unless the Phillies have a fire-sale midseason.
