Box Score Recap – 5/7/2013

Cameron Perkins extends his hitting streak to 12.  He’s only been held hitless in 2 of his 30 games so far in 2013, and he has 10 multi-hit games. His ISO is .224, for those wondering about his power. I’d say he can hit at A+, wouldn’t you?

Elsewhere, some nice, if not awe-inspiring starting pitching from everyone below AAA – Hector Neris, Hoby Milner, (the best of the lot, with 8H, 1BB and 6K in 7 scoreless IP), and Nic Hanson.

Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB.

  1. Another good outing for DeFratus. Have to believe Aumont better get it together soon or DeFratus is going to take his spot.

    1. Aumont hasn’t been that bad. He hasn’t been that good either, but he’s probably been somewhat unlucky with BABIP and he’s only walked 2 hitters in his last 6 innings.

      1. If someone’s going, Durbin ought to be at the top of that list. As for Kendrick, at what point do the Phils start thinking about signing him to a 2-3 year extension?

        Like

          1. I’m as thrilled with Kendrick’s development as the next guy, and I hope he has a career year, but I still don’t think he’d be worth signing to a long-term contract. But that’s getting way ahead of ourselves.

            Like

            1. Actually, now would be the perfect time to extend Kendrick if the Phillies choose to do so. He’s under arbitration for 1 more year, and it would be easier to buy out some FA years now.

    2. Getting tired of watching DeFratus pitch for the pigs. I still say he develops into one of our more consistent arms out of the pen –

    3. Aumont’s the guy you keep. Horst, Durbin and Valdes could not possibly be more expendable. I might give Durbin another few weeks because he really does have a good and long track record of success and his velocity has not been that bad this year.

      1. Right now I would say that Horst is the most vulnerable. There’s just not a whole lot to like there right now. Even lefties are hitting well off of him. Valdes looks more capable of going on a decent run than Horst and I suspect Durbin has the longest leash of the three.

        1. Durbin’s contract affords him a little more leash than the others. It’s not ideal, but it’s the way that goes. It’s the Danys Baez/Chad Qualls roster spot. Which is not a bad spot to have for a young bullpen with little experience. But this bullpen has Pap and Adams and Bastardo. That’s a ton of big league experience. So dumb to sign that guy, IMO, when there are guys like DeFratus waiting in AAA. Team has a tendency to not trust its young guys more than a team with third place in its future. DeFratus, and now Mike Stutes, seem to be better RH options for the bullpen than Durbin. I had no problem with them keeping Valdes around instead of Diekman, and Diekman’s shown himself to be something less than ready for the big leagues. Savery has been a pleasant surprise this year, after being pretty sure he was headed for a DFA toward the end of 2012. After thinking that the AAA bullpen could be a position of strength, I’m starting to see how thin it might really be. Should have kept Schwimer around, IMO.

          1. Brad, I agree with you about Chad Durbin but you wanted to keep Micheal Schwimmer? The Phillies are not dead yet and with the way Freddie Gonzales has overworked Craig Kimbrel (just like Jonny Venters) and his entire bullpen the Braves could be in trouble this year.

            1. I think Schwimer would have been in AAA at the start of the year, but yes, I would have rather kept him around. Personality issues aside, DeFratus in MLB and Schwimer in AAA is more attractive to me than Durbin in MLB and DeFratus in AAA.

            2. Well, Schwimer hasn’t pitched yet this season, so I don’t think he would have provided depth or anything else. Also, while I’ve defended him before against the more extreme haters, it seems foolish (to say the least) for a fringy right-handed reliever to get on his team’s front office’s nerves. I don’t know the merits of the whole injury grievance last year, but I do know it’s pretty rare for a player of his experience level to dissent that publicly.

            3. It got to a point where management determined he was more trouble than he was worth. So they cut ties and got a prospect in return. It makes perfect sense to me.

            4. “Hasn’t pitched yet this season” is an after the fact argument – he wasn’t dealt as damaged goods. He was dealt as the problem child or whatever. You’re right, it’s worked out ok in this instance, but Durbin over “young reliever X” is still not my idea of smart.

            5. Durbin stinks. No doubt about that But how is it that you prefered Schwimer to Durbin at the start of the year, when Durbin pitched better in 2012, than Schwimer?

              Like

            6. Age and ceiling, and technically I preferred DeFratus to Durbin and Schwimer in AAA and Durbin not on the team at all.

              Like

            7. Don’t get me wrong, no one thinks Durbin’s signing looks great in retrospect. But your argument would be stronger if the young guys you would have preferred to rely on were doing great. As it is, Aumont has been up and down, Horst has struggled with bad luck and diminished stuff, Diekman has generally stunk (as I know you conceded), and both Stutes has struggled with his control. DeFratus and (surprisingly) Savery have done comparatively well at AAA, but it’s not like they’re the second coming of the Nasty Boys or something. And in your alternative scenario, Schwimer would still be hurt. So, I’m not exactly seeing how signing a cheap veteran reliever was such a boneheaded move. They just picked the wrong veteran. It happens to every team, every year.

              Like

            8. It doesn’t have to, though. They could not sign that veteran and see how it goes with the younger guys in middle relief. You’re 7th thru 9th innings with the lead are controlled by three veterans plus Aumont, and they had Horst and Valdes, both of whom were good in 2012, plus DeFratus and Diekman, who seemed like relatively safe plays, Stutes coming off an injury year, Savery and Rosenberg, (and Schwimer). That’s a lot of guys who could be working in the middle innings to figure out if they have big league careers ahead of them. Instead, they’re waiting on the veteran to get released before they get the chance. I agree that it’s a thing people do. But to me, it’s a waste of money and counter to the development of young players.

          2. I don’t agree at all with your theory of rather having Defratus and Schwimer, over Durbin an Defratus. Schwimer had negative value, no matter how you feel about Durbin. He wasn’t any good, so it can’t be held against the front office for trading a ‘less than major league’ pitcher.

The biggest problem I had with the signing of Durbin, was the fallout from Juan Cruz. Cruz was offended that he got a minor league deal, when they signed a lesser pitcher (Durbin) to a major league deal. I look at Juan Cruz as a better pitcher than Durbin. And I thought that losing Cruz for Durbin was a negative.

      2. Horst is the one that can be replaced with Savery. Valdes is just the long man, who are we going to replace him with? He only pitches when the game is out of hand.

        Like

        1. Durbin could be a longman if they asked him to. They might not do that, but they could.

        2. There’s been a lot of discussion on Crashburn Alley about Horst running into some bad luck this year. That said, he’s clearly not striking out guys at the same rate.

  2. Was listening to joe Kerrigan. He said that Aumont just doent trust his fastball. And that big buys like him sometimes take longer to develop. Why isn’t de fraus not up pitching with us now. Durbin is plain terrible, and aumont has lost charlies trust.

    1. The Phillies need to make Aumont throw his fastball as often as Bastardo throws his slider. If he refuses than back to Allentown he goes and give DeFratus his chance.

  3. Very nice! Two shutouts and a one run game in the 4 games played. Lakewood needed a well pitched game. They are at the bottom or next to last in most offensive categories (including nose hair – bu-dum- bum). Pitching hasn’t been much better as they are near the bottom in every pitching category. But maybe a solid pitching performance will kick start the team. Hanson is a big kid (6’7″) who looked like a reliever prospect when he was drafted. Relief hasn’t gone too well for the 21 year old. His last two outings have been starts and he’s gone 11 innings giving up 5 hits and no runs. His K/9 have dropped and his BB/9 has increased since starting but he’s getting stretched out. Someone to keep an eye on in an otherwise dismal Lakewood group. SSS applies.

    1. Does anybody know what kind of stuff Hanson has? Judging by his W-port stats, he’s probably not very overpowering. Better numbers this year though.

  4. Was looking through minor league team stats this morning and came across this interesting tidbit. Lakewood has hit a total of 8 HR this season. The Ranger’s affiliate Hickory leads the Sally with 53! Not a Phillies affiliate but they are fun to follow. Top to bottom they can rake with Gallo, Brinson, Alfaro, Williams, and Mazara with Ronald Guzman returning in the coming weeks.

I remember before the draft last year, Lewis Brinson was linked to the Phillies as their prototypical draft pick. Very raw but very athletic. Turns out he can play a little baseball too.

    1. That’s the guy I saw in spring traning, very talented. I wonder if he tried to pitch through an injury early in the year because the results are so different.

    1. Greene was looking good last night. As Morandini stated in an interview earlier this week, “A few hits is all he needs and he’ll be fine; we’ve all been there. ”
      Let this be the start.

      Like

    2. Greene isn’t hitting much and he is striking out way too much, but he has walked his way to a .348 OBP.. He had another walk to go along with the hit.

      1. It’s really the only ray of hope that he can somehow still reach stardom. He has unusually good plate judgment. Everything else, not so much thus far.

        1. Didn’t Morandini say a lot of his strikeouts were looking? High walk rate doesn’t necessarily translate to good plate discipline.

          Like

      2. If they decide to send Greene to Williamsport when they start playing, maybe he should walk there. He could go by I-80 or I-476. Just stay on the shoulder and always walk against traffic.

    1. Extended Spring Training, he is likely destined for Williamsport. The bat was probably ready for Lakewood but he needed the work defensively at second base and EST is the best place to get constant instruction and work

  5. What about Robles as a possible replacement for Horst, he’s carrying a .97 WHIP and 12.8 K/9. He could be a serious weapon in the pen.

    Like

    1. He (Robles) is pretty good, but I don’t think he’s quite ready for big league ball. He has a nice arm, however (lefty at around 93 – pretty impressive).

  6. What makes Savery better this time around? I haven’t seen him pitch in lv,so I am just wondering, if there is anything different about his stuff. and the question on Hanson does anyone know what he throws and his velocity? ty

    Like

    1. I don’t know – it’s hard to tell. I thought perhaps his velocity had increased (he used to sit around 89 or 90, occasionally touching the low 90s), but when he was up a few weeks ago I saw the same velocity. I’m not sure what happened or what he has improved, but they sure as heck need a better reliever down there.
