Nice line from Seth Rosin, a little less nice from Nick Hernandez, and I’m not sure how to categorize the line from Ethan Martin – even “a lot less nice” seems a bit generous, though 4 walks and only 3 hits isn’t the worst day anyone’s ever had.

I thought Kyrell Hudson left the organization.

I think he took a few days to figure out what he wanted to do and apparently he decided to continue playing ball.

So is it just me, or does Clearwater have the most interesting players to follow? Altherr, Franco, Dugan and Perkins are all off to great starts.

Nik, that is what we call “Damning with faint praise.” To be the most interesting group of prospects in this organization does not mean too much to me. That being said, I do agree that the Clearwater prospects are the flavor of the week/month. Sadly, their present prominence has as much to do with the disaster in Lakewood, the barren wasteland in Reading and the slow starts in Lehigh.
I have to admit I have become more and more skeptical over the last 10 years of closely watching the Phillies’ organization. The process from drafted prospect to actual big leaguer is so long and difficult and so few actually materialize. Looking back at the numbers of fools gold prospects is almost comical at this point. I will not be counting my chickens until I actually see a player performing well in pinstripes.

You’ve become more skeptical during the best 10 year stretch in the franchise’s history?

Pat, we have a tough crowd here.

Pat: I was not speaking about the Major League performance. I was speaking of the minor league progression. Have u seen an upward trend in the system for players brought into the system since 2005? Have I missed something? Do u realize that the Utley, rollins, Howard, hamels, ruiz, madsen products are a blip on the radar screen. They colored expectations, but realistically when will u get the best home grown pitcher, the best franchise ss, 2b and 1b within a 5 yr span? Since that amazing period what has the system produced, either here or shipped elsewhere?

If your expectation is stars then most systems don’t produce that, but it has been a bit of drought. Player brought into the system after 2005 have produced
Major Leagues:
3 – #4 Starting Pitchers – Happ, Worley, Pettibone, Drabek? (hard to project his ceiling as more than this after TJ x2)
2 – Utility Players – Galvis, Donald (though Personally I like Galvis more)
9 – Relievers – Schwimmer, Stutes, Diekman, Bastardo, Rosenberg, DeFratus, Outman, Zagurski, Savery
2 – Outfielders – Brown, Gose
Minors (need a certain level of safety to project):
3 – #2/#3 Starters – Biddle, Morgan, Cosart
3 – Above average regulars – Franco, Singleton, D’Arnaud
3 – Average Regulars – Asche, Villar, Santana
3 – Assorted Major Future Major Leaguers in AAA – Hernandez, Taylor, Ruf
05-07 was really bad, but we are just starting to see what 08 onward had. Any system would love those 6 minor leaguers with plus upside. The most important thing has been the supreme lack of picks. Over 7 years from 05-11 the Phillies had 5 1st round picks and 3 supplemental round picks, in 2011 alone the Rays had 3 first round picks and 7 supplemental picks, between 2011 and 2012 the Jays had 3 1st round picks and 7 supplemental round picks. If you don’t have an opportunity at the top talent you cannot produce star players, there were missed opportunities in Latin America but that is now a thing of the past.

by far the best interesting group of hitters. Biddle at Reading is worth seeing.

I’d say the Lakewood kids are more interesting to follow. Unfortunately they aren’t currently generating positive results though.

Trying to catch two Lakewood games in Greensboro, and two Lehigh Valley games in Durham next. Any specific players that you guys would like to hear back on?

Thanks for offering. How bout any fielding chances Walding gets at 3b, and Pointer’s ABs. Would like to know if Pointer has any obvious holes in his swing. I presume that he may have difficulty hitting a breaking ball. Thanks man

@nik I agree. With their start Franco Altherr and now Dugan are very interesting. I think we all know we are going to have to be patient with Greene, Quinn, and Walding. All 3 guys in Clearwater are very important to the organization as a whole.

The starts of Rosin and Hernandez are becoming just as interesting as anyone else’s save of course for that lefty kid at Reading

Don’t forget Adam Morgan. He’s kind of important too.

By the way, I was at the Biddle start this Sunday and saw Rosin (pronounced ro-SEEN) and this guy is enormous. He’s like 6’4″ 270 lbs of mostly pure muscle. He looks like a defensive tackle without the extra fat.
LikeLike
That would make him a defensive end.
LikeLike
Yeah, I was going to say a DII defensive tackle, but I stopped short of that detail. He’s not rangy like a defensive end. Really, he’s built like a tackle.

Maybe an offensive guard would be more appropriate.

A little small for that too. If he were an inch or two shorter, he’d be a perfect center.

Rosin is a legit 6’6″ and 250 and some of the guys were talking at Clearwater that his vertical was 32 or 33 inches. Great leg and core strength for pitching over the long haul.

Plus only 1 BB and 3 Ks. But why did he only pitch 3 innings? His pitch count was fine at 45, though the ball/strike ratio wasn’t great. Still, that suggests an injury I think.

He hasn’t pitched in over rwo weeks.

Also Anthony Burkhart says Neris is getting another spot start tomorrow, Cochran is heading to Lehigh Valley to start over the weekend, and Mike Drago says Brandon Erbe has been released and Justin Friend is coming down to Reading. Someone’s got to be coming up to Reading soon, unless they plan to make Neris a starter and fill in with Hollands maybe…not sure where he is right now, (what else is new for that guy?).

Matt your argument about other teams having better picks. just makes my case so much stronger.knowing they didnt have high picks, then dont ignore the international market. cheap thinking and bad foresight, and all the players you listed only bastardo is anything to speak of. all the other bullpen guys, are as of now just names, lets talk about the bad first round picks, hewitt, greene, horrible, who scouted those guys, savery a first round draft choice who might be a sixth inning guy, great scouting.collier another toosly no hit guy, workmen not signing over 75.000 a third round pick, who is really pitching well now.sorry but they had other avenues to get players. when they didnt have the draft picks. and chose to go cheap, bottom five in spending in international market,

Thanks roccom for telling the truth. The good days are gone for a while now, unless some of these minor league players become stars, and I mean fast.Do we have any hope for good hitters in the near future?
Right now you have a few in AAA,but boy they better get hot,and get a chance on the big league club, plus with Cholly they better start out good or he won’t give them a chance.
