I have been trying to put together what appears to be the beginnings of the roster for each team through a variety of sources and this is what I think we currently have. None of this is confirmed, and all is subject to change:
Update: 700 pm–Both rosters are confirmed
Lehigh Valley
Catchers: Joseph and Lerud
Infield: Overbeck, Hernandez, Martinez, Asche, Fields, Orr
Outfield: Ruf, Gillies, Castro, J. Mitchell, Susdorf
SP: Pettibone, Morgan, Martin, Cloyd, Rosenberg
RP: Stutes, DeFratus, Diekman, Savery, Jiminez, Miner, Friend
Reading:
Catchers: Valle, Rupp, and Suomi
Infield: Murphy, Henson, Cartwright, Hanzawa, Duran, Abreu
Outfield: D. Mitchell, Hewitt, Collier, Welty
Starters: Biddle, Colvin, Buchanan, Wright
Relievers: Knigge, J. Johnson, Simon, JC Ramirez, Neris, Sosa, Robles
Come on… enuf with the old farts… give us the youngsters …. Lakewood baby!!!!

Reading looks pretty horrible quite frankly.

Now that you see it yeah…Infield is entirely filler and the OF Collier is likely the only one worth watching. I guess Valle and Rupp plus the the Pitching will be the compelling part of the team
LikeLike
Their infield isn’t entirely filler. Edgar Duran will be interesting to watch.

True he has some sleeper potential. I’ve overlooked him a bit

Welty could be interesting, but you are right. Rupp and Collier are the only ones worth watching. Starting pitching could be interesting.

Those of us who watch Reading have to hope for some good position players to get mid-season promotions. Franco? Dugan?

Inciarte on the opening day 25 man big league roster is ludicrous. The team is already short 2 starters (Ruiz and D Young) to begin the season, and they shorten the bench by keeping a single A player on the roster.
LikeLike
Who is better and if they aren’t on the 40 man roster who do you remove to compensate? Inciarte is likely gone or injured when Young comes back and Quintero is DFA’d to make room for Ruiz. You remove a marginal pinch hitter for a guy who can run and be a defensive replacement. This team likely will only need to PH out of the pitchers spot 2-3 times a game, expect double switches a lot of Mayberry/Nix PHs and then Frandsen and Galvis.
LikeLike
No matter how marginal the pinch hitter you use (Orr), you don’t weaken your major league team to keep the rule 5 guy on the 25 man roster. Unless the rule 5 guy will obviously help the team win more than the veteran. Whether they use Inciarte as a pinch hitter or a defensive replacement, they are weakening the team. Inciarte isn’t going to be a better defender than Mayberry or Nix, so I’m not sure why you keep mentioning that.
The only way this makes sense is if they’ve already made a deal with Arizona, and haven’t announced it or they are waiting to see if Arizona has wnough space to accept him back.
LikeLike
“Inciarte isn’t going to be a better defender than Mayberry or Nix.” Um, what? Nix can’t play CF and Mayberry in center is barely competent.
LikeLike
I don’t understand how you think keeping Pete Orr on the big league roster is more important than keeping Inciarte. Pete Orr adds nothing. I get your frustration if it was anyone else, but Orr can’t hit and there’s not much evidence he’s a better fielder.
And I realize this is moot once Delmon Young comes back.
LikeLike
I’ll point out that I think the Phils might consider Inciarte a AA player since he completed A ball last year, and Orr is no more than a AAA player. Whatever difference there is between them until Young comes back is negligible.

VOR – I agree, though I still don’t think Inciarte survives beyond next week.

Ruben on Ender:
He’s young and he might be a little overmatched offensively, but defense is important to us,” Amaro said. “He has an instinct in the outfield that in my mind is a little like Galvis in the infield. He’s aggressive and he has good routes and he throws well.”

My comments about Inciarte in this thread are not meant to discredit Inciarte’s potential. I actually like what I’ve seen of him. If I were to recreate my top 30 list, Inciarte would probably make it into my top 20. I just don’t think it is necessary or prudent to put a player that has never been to AA, on an opening day roster.
But on the other hand, congratulations to Ender and bank account! I know he is pretty happy about this turn of events.

But I know the phillies appreciate men and women with your attitude, its makes it easier for them, when you set the bar so low.
LikeLike
That is your own opinion. Minor league teams for the most part are events, especially family driven. They sell most of their tickets before the season in group packages, it is why the most poorly attended games of the season are the playoffs because they are unplanned. Also a team of prospects doesn’t necessarily mean a good team overall, often overage org guys make for a more winning team. It is much better for prospect followers if these are prospect laden teams but only us and the front office really feel that way.

I doubt many were excited this time last year to see Adam Morgan, Cody Asche or Darin Ruf on a roster, although they turned out to be kind of interesting to watch, no? Give some of these kids a break … and a chance to show what they can do.
Personally, I’m excited to watch prospects like Valle, Rupp, Collier, Biddle, Colvin and Wright in Reading. I’d also curious to see how Hewitt’s power plays in that park. It’s not a prospect powerhouse, but the roster has intriguing pieces.

He didn’t say you were stupid. He said that your remarks were stupid. There’s a huge difference. Smart people sometimes say stupid things.
Not caring about non-prospects isn’t quite the same thing as only caring about big names. There’s a good 30-40 players in the Phillies minor league system that are interesting for people whose primary focus is the future of the big league team. The Reading Phillies don’t have many of those players. Your sarcastic comments about shortening the draft and only caring about the big names is incorrect and unwarranted.

Thank you for correcting the inference to my stupidity. Reading these posts intrigues me as people who seem to possess incredible amounts of clairvoyance about the future of every player, have yet to see them play this year. Please explain how my draft comments are so “incorrect and unwarranted”. It appears to be the theme of these posts is to discount the Reading players as irrelevant to the future of the MLB team. Taking that to the next step seems logical to limit the draft. Why waste everyone’s time with these type of players ? It’s already been decided since bloggers have deemed them non-prospects. Of course I am being sarcastic , however lets support each of our Minor League teams and not denegrate them the day the roster is released.

Well, the truth is that the teams need to fill the rosters and each team has far more minor leaguers than they have true prospects. Not to say guys like Ruf don’t jump up and surprise from time to time. A lot of later round picks were recognized as serious prospects from the start. Guys like Brown, Cosart, Colvin, SIngleton. They were HS who generally got decent if not great overslot bonuses. Probably less of that going forward with the new draft rules. Less likely for a later round college guy, apart from relievers, to jump out. Still, you find guys like Cloyd will occassionally surprise. Cloyd and Ruf were a lot in one season. Most of the college late rounders pull a Hyatt or Duffy. It probably does make sense under the new rules to end the draft after round 10 and then let the teams sign whomever else they choose for no more than $100K per contract.

To be honest with you, I don’t think anyone cares if you go to Reading games this year and that includes the Phillies organization.

Reading doesn’t look good on paper and there are only one or two prospects who are good bets to get some time in the majors, but there are still a decent numbers of interesting players beyond Biddle, Collier and Wright.
Edgar Duran is 22, improved just about all his numbers last year while moving up a level, and hit 7 homers in a really league/home park. Colvin is age appropriate for Reading and still might have the best stuff of any starter in the system. Hewitt- c’mon you know you’re curious to see if he figures it out and how his power plays in Reading’s park. It’s definitely not “the” team to watch in the system but since I’ve been following the farm I’ve seen worse.

I guess I should’ve seen it coming, but Tocci being placed above LGJ and Cozens is definitely interesting.

A lot going on here with these three. Least notable is Cozens who should get promoted to Williamsport.
I’ve been talking up Tocci as a fringe Top 5 Phils prospect since last summer and even I’m a bit surprised to see him start with Lakewood. He’s certainly a more advanced ball-player than either LGJ or Cozens, but I still thought he’d play half a season at Williamsport after an extended stay in Clearwater. Good for him.
LGJ – is it me alone; or does Larry seem to be treading very close to being something of a disappointment? Purely speculation on my part, but I hope he’s not staying behind in Clearwater to get in shape.
LikeLike
LGJ is young enough to turn it around, but he has definitely been a disappointment. Not being able to stay in shape as a 19-year old is a bad sign. Being his physical size and not showing in-game power is a red flag. The skinny guys can add weight and strength going forward, LGJ cannot. He is limited to smaller parks yielding better HR results as he moves up the line.

Infielders: Serritella, Villalobos, Roof, Franco, Alonso, Stassi

Cochran will be ext Spring to stay stretched out so that he can fill a starter’s role with Reading or LHV if the need arises. In terms of the number and depth of prospects it’s the best Phillies AAA team I can ever remember, and it’s not close. This is one of those rare years where guys may be promoted who make a big difference in a stretch run. It wouldn’t at all surprise me if one of the pitchers is in the big league rotation by June or July and it also wouldn’t surprise me if one of the outfielders and a couple of the relievers become significant contributors to the big league team. Very exciting!
To those who are interested in actually watching these prospects, now is the time for my annual pitch to buy the minor league video package at milb.com. All of the games are archived within a few hours after each game concludes, so you can pull up a game on your computer and just focus on the at bats or the pitched innings you want to see. Last year, I felt like I had a bit of an inside and advanced track on prospects by being able to monitor these players through archived videos. The package is a little more pricey than it was in prior years (I think it went from $20 to $40), but it’s still a reasonable deal.
