Shane Victorino traded to Dodgers for Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin

The dominoes have begun to fall with the Phils shipping OF Shane Victorino to the Dodgers for Relief Pitcher Josh Lindblom and Staring Pitcher Ethan Martin.

The Phils shed a nice chunk of salary with Victorino’s departure, saving approximately $3M over the balance of the season (Victorino’s salary was $9.5M)

Martin, 23, is a fairly highly touted RHP who was the Dodgers first round pick in 2008, signing for $1.3M.  This year playing in AA for the Dodgers organization, Martin started 20 games going 8-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 118 IP.  Opponents are hitting just .214 against Martin and he sports a 4.6/8,9 BB/K ratio and a 1.27 WHIP.  I would expect Martin would land somewhere in the top ten prospects in the Phils organization.

Lindblom, 25, was the Dodgers 2nd round pick in 2008 and has spent the last two seasons in the LA bullpen. He is 2-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 48 appearances this season. Lindblom’s WHIP stands at 1.25, to go along with a 3.4/8.1 BB/K ratio.  Lindblom is expected to take an immediate spot in the Phillies bullpen, more than likely leading to Joe Savery being sent back down to Lehigh Valley.

      1. Martin
        ERA – 3.58
        WHIP – 1.3
        BB/9 – 4.7
        K/9 – 8.5

        May
        ERA – 5.15
        WHIP – 1.50
        BB/9 – 5.2
        K/9 – 8.9

If Martin is a long shot, Trevor May will never set foot on an MLB mound.

        1. If May keeps on pitching like he has you are correct. Last year May had a better than 3 K/BB ratio, Martin has never sniffed 2.

  1. It’s a start. More than I would of expected. Cholly needs to announce his retirement. Anyone who didn’t see this whole thing happening has the wrong glasses on.

    1. The Phillies need a re- haul in the front office. How I miss Conlin who was the only writer who talked about the scouts and the inner guts of the organization. I know that when Arbuckle left in 2008, after he lost out on his bid to become GM, he took some people with him, and there’s been a huge drop in recognizing player talent. It was very similar to when Dallas Green left in 82.

  2. Tommy Joseph from the Giants. Power!
Martin is capable of over 60 walks a year. He has a 9 control rating on the cube. At first i thought it was a mistake. Then again we all have warts

  3. I feel like RAJ is setting up a Headley trade. This isn’t re-tooling, it’s rebuilding because we’ve only got 1 major leaguer back at this point. I heard the Padres liked Joseph. Also, maybe Rube is setting up something for Schoop as well

  4. the phillies were not going to make vict a qualifying offer after the season, so anything they get for him is a bonus.

  5. Tommy Joseph is pretty impressive. Age 19-20 season he hits 22 homers, this year in his age 20-21 season he is being challenged at AA and more than holding his own, including throwing out 48% of baserunners. I like it.

    1. terrible trade , this guy has 6 hrs with a. 260 BA @ AA……WOW !!!! What’s his OBP , the new metric that MLB is supposed to use to replace BA ?

      1. Dom, after reading this comment, and your above comment about Martin. You seem to be the snotty Big League fans who no nothing about Prospects and just follow the Big League team, stats mean everything to you when they mean very little, there are so many contributing factors, that jumping to a straight conclusion is crazy.

        1. That’s not entirely true We just look at different stats. And Martin’s K/BB rate being under 2 is sad.

          1. No, what you do is make irrational speculations based on one arbitrary statistic. Now I’m not saying his walk rate is encouraging, but if you read about him you know he’s working on a change-up. Maybe he was told to throw 60% change-ups, and since he doesn’t have control of it yet, that leads to more walks. Maybe if he stuck to his two plus pitches (fastball and curve) he would strike out more and walk a lot fewer.

Pitching prospects are extremely difficult to gauge, especially when you haven’t seen them in person.

      2. He is 20, that’s 3 years younger than he is supposed to face AA pitching. His line is extremely impressive given his age.

          1. Hey, genius, it’s clear you know nothing about the minor leagues.

Just to humor you, here’s the numbers one pitcher posted upon his first exposure to AA and AAA. Try to guess who this is.

            AA (20 year-old): 7 games started; 5.40 ERA; 30K/11BB in 36.2 IP; 1.555 WHIP
AAA (same year): 22 GS; 4.58 ERA; 64K/53BB in 125.2 IP; 1.472 WHIP

Man, according to your analysis, this guy must be long gone, considering this was in 1997. He must have been laughed off the team.

Funny, he won a Cy Young two years ago for the Phillies and is a first-ballot HoF’er.

And, before you misquote me, no, I am definitely NOT saying Martin will be the next Halladay. What I’m saying is that statistics for a minor leaguer ultimately play second fiddle to scouting reports a good deal of the time – especially for pitchers.

  6. Jon Mayo ranks Ethan Martin 5th in Phillies Prospects:

    Ethan Martin — Rank: 5 — Chattanooga Lookouts (AA) — ETA: 2013
    Position: RHP Age: 23, DOB: 06/06/1989—-Bats: R, Throws: R—Height: 6′ 2″, Weight: 195
    Drafted: 2008, 1st (15) – LAD

Martin still possesses the raw stuff that made him a first-round pick back in 2008. He has a plus fastball and curve, and he’s continuing his work on a changeup. More than anything, his lack of command has been his worst enemy, with a walk rate of greater than six per nine innings. He threw better in a relief role in Double-A in 2011 and perhaps that’s where his long-term future lies, though the Dodgers still had him in the starter role when they dealt him to Philadelphia along with Josh Lindblom for Shane Victorino at the Trade Deadline

    1. Frieri is not a nothing player. Very good bullpen piece, just what the Phillies would be looking for if they weren’t 10 fathoms under water.

      1. Frieri was traded to the Angels in early May when the Phillies weren’t under water…The Phillies org. just doesn’t recognize budding talent

  8. I read somewhere- maybe a quote from a Dodger site-that Martin is subject to the Rule 5 deal, and thus has to be placed on the 40 man roster. Anyone else see that ?

    Like

    1. Read it on Baseball America. That’s true, and not really a problem. The Phillies will add Martin to the 40-man this offseason.
