Box Score Recap 7-30-2012

Nice performance from Colin Kleven – 8 scoreless, 2 hits, 6 Ks, that’s it. And Delvi Francisco’s scoreless season ends on a 2 out balk. Bummer.

  1. Duffy 3-3 with a BB in his first game back with Clearwater. He’d been scuffling a bit lately with the GCL Phillies so hopefully the promotion reinvigorates him. Would love to see some of his GCL success translate to Advanced A

      1. Meant Duffy but mentioned GCL Phils instead of Lakewood. Thanks for the correction kphilly

        1. and the ‘scuffling’ comment would apply to his latest games at Clearwater since that is what MiLB is displaying for his ‘Last 10’ games. I should go back to bed 🙂

          1. Gotcha…yeah hope Duffy has a better time in Clearwater this time around. I wish he was a 20 yr old corner outfielder instead of a 25 yr old 1b/DH. Oh we did have that in Domingo Santana. Too bad we couldn’t hold on to him.

    1. Do players in the VSL or DSL ever get promoted mid season to WP or the GCL ? If so Serverino would be deserving.

      1. Rarely. We often see someone get a few starts in at the beginning of the VSL/DSL season like Moises Rivas this year. That is because those leagues start earlier. Once the season starts the Phillies have probably mapped out most of the GCL playing time and are fine with players dominating in the VSL/DSL.

  2. So let’s say Duffy hits the same in Clearwater as he did in Lakewood, ie destroy the league. Then what are people’s opinions of him?

    1. LOL here we go. I defer to those that say he’s not a real prospect but anyone that puts up those kinds of numbers I’m paying attention, I account for his age and want to see if he can do it at an age appropriate level.

Since he bats left you never know he could be a bat off the bench.

      1. There are very very very very very…very few backup 1B/PH types in the major leagues that don’t play a second position.

        1. While true its not unheard of. We see it with older players. We saw it with Thome, we see it with Giambi and to a degree we saw it with Stairs. While all of those guys at 1 time could play a position they were carried on a 25 man when they really were less than adequate at any position.

Now for that to happen you need serious pop in your bat and the rest of the bench needs to be solid.

          1. Thome is a HOFer, Giambi is a MVP and almost HOFer. Stairs was an OF. All of these guys were *beyond* proven major league hitters before they became bench players.

            1. I’m torquing your screws of course but if you know your baseball history you know the names of the lesser known guys that played very little in the field who were used mostly off the bench and they enjoyed nice careers in the big leagues.

And you and I both know calling Stairs an OF is a bit ridiculous…

          2. Can’t believe we’re comparing Duffy to Thome and Giambi now. It’s seems to be the trend that everyone is becoming so reactionary to one start. “Player X goes 3-3, better call him up.” “Player Y went 0-4 with 3k’s, he’s a lost cause.”

    2. Simple – that he should be a non-prospect at Reading in 2013 and “protect” hitters in that line-up.

  3. Great comments especially before coffee. Cheese and I get guff for talking about Cisco.

    1. Was watching some of it on milb.tv, he gave up a dribbler that Luna muffed and then the baserunner took off on the first pitch to steal second. Werth then smacks one to knock in the run, credit to Pettibone though he didn’t let it rattle him or if he did he didn’t show it.

      1. He isn’t out of options. Was never optioned in 2010, only 2011 and 2012. Either way, let’s hope his minor league career is over (barring the occasional rehab visit).

          1. They could use another outfielder at LHV. I would think he would be a consideration for a September call-up, although plate discipline seems to be a failing. A call up may be too soon. Both he and Valle suffer from that. Valle was horrible at bat last night with 4 Ks and a double play grounder that was on a first pitch.

        1. Ah, I thought he was optioned in spring training 2010. Thanks for the correction. Though per Amaro yesterday, doesn’t sound like that last option will be used.

  4. Asche had a heck of a game last night. 4-5 with a double. He’s coming on strong now. If he finishes out strong he’s got be very near the top of the prospect list.

    1. I was impressed by Ashe’s at-bat in the game on Tuesday. He fouled off some pitches and stroked a single to tie the game. He showed plate discipline and the ability to come through in the clutch. Looks like he is a hitter at this level. His fielding needs to improve, but hopefully he can get that going. I’m sure the Phillies are taking him seriously when thinking about their third base situation. He probably needs a year at LHV to complete his apprenticeship in this difficult journey to the majors.

  5. Ashe is left handed i believe? If the y have ashe at third utley at second, howard at first, dom in left, and nix in right, and sign bourn that would be nuts, and if they platoon nix with mayberry who cant hit a curve or offspeed pitch, bad mix.
