Box Score Recap 7-28-2012

Keivi Rojas owns the GCL. 23.2 IP, 15H, 2BB, 33K. There’s a man in need of a promotion.

I’d say something nice about the starting pitchers in that Reading DH, but they both walked too many men for me to get excited about either performance.

  1. Player X had a great night and should be doubled jumped. I’m going to overlook his flaws and age and proclaim him a major leaguer. Player Y had a oh-fer/got shelled. I’ve peered into his soul and he really needs to focus/change his approach. Player Z has had a great/terrible 10 game stretch. I’m going to ignore small sample size and post an obscure reason (that may or may not be backed up by a one sentence quote from a bench coach in a small town paper) that will explain everything.

    1. Please Charlie, Player X’s BB rate is terrible and his K rate is worrisome. Player Y is an idiot/moron and doesn’t take his opportunity seriously. Player Z on the other hand is the greatest player to ever walk the face of the earth because his BABiP is strictly a result of his dominance and talent. I got a look at him and he just “feels” like a ballplayer. Intangibles, heart, stupidity, bad routes, etc, etc, etc….

    2. So, “Charlie” , why is it you feel the need to come on here and post a one paragraph synopsis of everything everyone else has ever posted on here?

      1. Poster C could always just go to another site if this one isn’t good enough. I for one live out of town and appreciate all the info I get from here. So glad people were nice enough to keep this going after PP left…

    1. Pence and Victorino will be traded. Brown will play right, Ruf in left and Mayberry/Pierre in center for rest of season. Might be more interesting to watch than what they are putting out there now.

      1. O’s interested also in Joe Blanton. Maybe Bundy comes our way, Bob that is, not Dylan.

      2. Lol at Pierre in Cf he is bad in left what in world would make you think he can play center?

        1. people base it off his speed not his arm. Common mistake that people think all you need for centerfield is speed, not knowing a stronger arm in center is needed more than the corner outfield spots.

          1. That is wrong, there are plenty of CF without a great arm, it actually makes Victorino valuable for his (for instance Trout’s arm is his worse tool by far). The thing with Pierre is he has decent straight line home to first speed but it doesn’t play up in the OF. Also his arm is a 20 on the scouting scale so it doesn’t play anywhere.

            1. Yes I do agree my comment was about his arm and that for his speed he doesn’t have near the range he should

  2. I was kind of following along on Trevor May’s game. 3 of those walks were in the 6th. Before that it all looked really promising.

  3. How about Cesar Hernandez? I feel like this guy should be batting about .400, cause it seems like he’s 2 for 3 or 2 for 5 every night. He’s been steady around .300 all year long though, with more than a few doubles and triples. He’s been seriously consistent! As excited as i am about are younger offensive prospects, we gotta show him a little more love! I think i’ve seen suggestions of him being more of a utility guy in the majors, but is anybody else a litte higher on this guy? I understand he does not have much power, but couldn’t he be at least someone to get excited about as a starting second baseman? Just throwing it out there.

    1. I’ll bite. I’m a Cesar fan and I think he can be a productive big league player. There’s something to be said for a guy who puts the ball in play. Remember when after 2009 people complained that the Phillies needed a contact guy so Ruven went out and got Polanco? Yes, I know there’s a difference between putting up numbers in the minors vs numbers in the majors, but Hernandez’s walk rate is similar to Polanco’s, his ISO this year is similar to Polanco’s (he’s in a better hitter’s league and flourishing with doubles and triples like he should), his OBP, SLG and OPS are all similar to Polanco’s career averages. And on top of it, he’s 22. You’re not asking the kid to come to the big leagues and hit 25 home runs. He is what he is, a contact hitter who’s going to get you some extra-base hits. Yes, the strikeout rate is higher than you’d like to see for a contact hitter, but I’d say he’s been pretty successful as the Phillies have continued to challenge him since last year. No reason by late next year you couldn’t consider him as an eventual second base replacement.

    2. His batting average is not empty, he’s shown plenty of doubles power, and he’s fast enough to have double digit triples as well. I think his upside is as a good defensive 2B with speed, good contact skills and moderate power. I’ll take that as a starter anyday.

He had been slumping so it was good to see him have a good day in both halves of the double header. He still needs to keep improving of course. But if he can put his speed to better use on the bases and improve his batting eye a little he could be a really good player.

      1. He’s had a solid year, and is probably top10 in our system at the end of the year. I’d really like to see that SB% and BB% improve, but overall a nice bounceback year after the doublejump in 2011.

  4. Kenneth Giles promoted to CLW. I’m going to guess that they move Simon into the rotation spot left by Colvin.

  5. Sorry marfis, it doesn’t look like the “let’s just have Kennelly play 3B next year” theory is going to work out after all…

Phils are converting him to a pitcher.

    1. There was a time when he looked like a legit prospect as a super-utility guy, but I never expected him to be THAT versatile.

  6. From Baseball Betsy and Baseball Ross….Tocci and Rojas Observations…Saturday, Jul28th
—–But what Baseball Betsy and I also saw in the eight and ninth innings of Saturday morning’s game was more interesting. We saw a young 16 year old Phillies center-fielder Carlos Tocci loop a base hit over second base to center to drive in what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the eight and then he worked the back end of a double steal which resulted in a steal of home plate which scored the third run of the inning to give the GCLers a 3-1 lead over the Yankees going into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth the best reliever the GCL Phillies have Keivi Rojas continued his work. He came on to get a strike out for the third out in the top of the eight. Rojas finished off the Yankees by striking out the side in the ninth to get the win. The 19 year old Rojas displayed an amazing late breaking pitch that the young Yankees could not touch as he struck out all four batters he faced in the game.
It was rewarding to watch a 16 year old center-fielder get a clutch hit and run the bases to figure in two runs to set up the win and a 19 year old reliever simply dominate the other team to get the final four outs in the game on strikeouts. Clearly these two young Venezuelans Carlos Tocci and Keivi Rojas are players to watch as they move up the Phillies chain. They make it rewarding to watch Gulf Coast League games even on a hot, sultry Saturday morning in Clearwater

  7. Tocci is particularly interesting. At age 16 he is being brought along slowly. So far he has done well. Playing CF. So the FO must believe he has the (potential) speed, judgment, glove and arm to play that demanding position.

16? That could mean he’s got 5 years “prepping” in the minors.and yet then (age 21) he could be playing MLB. It’s a long road to the top, but he seems to have a good shot at that. Playing U.S.A. pro ball at age 16 and not so far being intimidated!
Next season at Wmspt? Followed by Lakewood….

Early, yes. But it is a wonder that he is amidst 18-20 year olds and showing brightly.

Just a seeming “wonderkund” to watch and hope for.

    Just amazing.

    1. Santana started his second season in LWD, prior to moving back to WPT when SS opened. I wouldn’t be shocked if this happened with Tocci as well, depending on his development.

    1. They’ve been playing him all over the outfield since his latest return-from-injury. It might just be getting looks at him to see where he slots in best for next year. Or Victorino and Pence could be gone by Tuesday night. Not sure how much Brown factors into that decision.

      1. He’s been playing all over the OF all year, actually, not just since his latest return. I’m excited to get an extended look at Brown in the majors finally, though. When Cholly finally admits that we’re out of the playoff hunt, he may even give Brown some time in CF to see how well it works.

      2. His latest return from injury has been two weeks (unless you count his rehab stint). I agree that Brown probably has no bearing on if they trae Pence, Vic or both, but having him play more RF recently shows, imo, that they are indeed serious about possibly trading Pence. So while it may not have a direct correlation on the moves they make, I don’t think it’s insignificant. Just my opinion anyways.

  9. Looks like after 7 perfect Morgan ran out of gas a little and gave up 3 singles. Still – 9K, 0BB and 11-1 GB/FB ratio. Filthy. This guys needs to be recognized.

    1. Makes sense. I thought they might move him back into the rotation in Clearwater seeing as he was so dominant out of the ‘pen there. Maybe he takes over Bonilla’s role in Reading.
