Brody Colvin has gotten the callup from High A Clearwater to AA Reading and is in line to take the rotation spot of recently promoted Jonathan Pettibone. It has been a bumpy road for Colvin who was removed from the Clearwater rotation for a time, presumably to get his head straight after struggling consistently for two months. Colvin, a 7th round pick in 2009, has made 18 starts this year and is 4-6 with a 4.48 ERA in 18 starts. His WHIP as a starter is 1.57 and the opposition is hitting .284 against him. On the brighter side of the equation, Colvin over his last 8 starts is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA but even during that time period his WHIP is a high 1.51 and the opposition is hitting .301.
Somewhere Adam Morgan, Austin Wright and Jesse Biddle are shaking their heads.
So who takes Colvin’s spot in the rotation?

I really wouldve just let him dominate the FSL for the rest of the year to get his confidence fully back… this could ruin everything he built up post All Star Break. I was for Morgan starting the year in Double A. Shouldve been Morgan.

I agree. Morgan’s last 5 starts have been pretty dominant and he topped it off with 13 K’s in 7 innings. Not much left for him to do in Clearwater.

One of those guys may be in the bullpen next year. Most likely Colvin. Rodriguez will probably be back in AA, with May, next year. So the rotation could be Biddle, May, Morgan, Rodriguez and Wright. With Colvin, Garner, Hollands and Buchanan in the bullpen.

A lot depends on how the year finishes for May, Rodriguez, Colvin, and Garner — but I’d be pretty shocked to see any of these 4 moved to the bullpen next year.

I don’t expect Trevor May to be considered for the bullpen. With Colvin, and especially Garner, I expect consideration for bullpen. Double A is where failed starters start getting groomed for the bullpen, especially if they’ve demonstrated they can’t throw 3 ML pitches (JC Ramirez), or can’t maintain their mechanics past 3 innings consistently (Colvin).
