Box Score Recap 7-26-2012

Cameron Rupp with 2 doubles and two walks in 4 trips to the plate.  He’s been hot for a long time.  Check out his pre/post All-Star splits and you’ll see around 120 PAs with increased power and walk rates.  Yes, he is old for the league.  Not much he can do about that except maybe hit Sebastian Valle in the knee with a club.

And this from the GCL – Kevin Walter pitched in a professional baseball game.  Wild.

    1. That’s a shock… while I see little evidence to show he’s ready, he could be much like some of my staff, challenge him and he steps up… Here’s hoping that’s what happens.

    2. When I first saw this my jaw dropped. All I could think of was more patient hitters in a less friendly pitching environment for Colvin. Not a good outlook.

Then I took a look at his last ten games – he has a FIP of 2.55 (if I calculated it right) and a BB/9 of 3.25. It’s a small sample, but it is certainly promising. He is still showing ground ball tendencies, so perhaps the switch to reading won’t be as bad for him as it has been for May and J-Rod. I guess we shall see…

    3. jmb – have you seen confirmation from any source other than the aforementioned tweet? I ask only because I don’t see any report of Colvin’s promotion in either the FSL or Eastern League transaction report

      Like

      1. Nothing has been “official” from the affiliates. The tweet was from his management agency, whose followerers include Stark, Olney, Callis, and other highly respected baseball writers. I’m fairly inclined to believe it.

        1. Can’t be official until the Phillies call up Frandsen which seems to be the move since he wasn’t in Lehigh Valley last night and Phillies beat writers saw him in Philly. The Phillies need to waive someone off the 40-man roster to make room for Frandsen so those moves will come out today.

          Like

            1. Well if that’s the case they still need to officially call up Frandsen before the IronPigs and R-Phils can make a move.

    1. i have been watching the phillies minor leagues for a long time, and I can’t recall another player destroying a level like Duffy is. I know he struggled in Clearwater, and is old for the league. But it is possible that he made tweaks after coming down from CLW. Either way, we have seen a lot of guys come down from CLW and none have done what he is doing over this long. Impressive. I am not writing him off yet.

      1. Michael Taylor destroyed, Lakewood, Clearwater and Reading in quick succession, over a season and a half.

      2. wow you must not have followed the Phillies minor leagues too long then…

how about Ryan Howard in Reading?

how about Cole Hamels in Lakewood (or really any of his minor league stops)?

        Shane Victorino in Scranton?

And those are just examples of current players on the major league squad.

Maybe you should go back and look at the numbers guys like Juan Samuel, Darren Daulton, Lonnie Smith, Ron Jones, etc put up.

Didnt “The Rizz” even put up numbers like this in Clearwater and Reading a few years ago?

and the awesome thing is that of all the guys i mentioned, none of them put these numbers up as 24 year olds in A- ball.

        1. Cole Hamels AAA line is absurd. 23 IP, 1 BB, 36K, 10 H, 1 ER. Duffy is leading the league in OPS by .091 over the second place guy though so I don’t see any reason to leave him in the SAL.

      3. Your replies all listed elite guys. but even against those elite talents, check the stats:
        – Duffy’s BA if higher than Dom’s OB% was at any level
        – Duffy’s LWD stats are better than Taylors were.
        – Ryan Howard had more power, but his hit tool stats were no where close to as good.

Point is, Duffy is tearing up a league at an elite level. We have had many “too old for his level” guys before, and none have beaten the league like this.

        Like

          1. I am not suggesting Duffy is an elite prospect. Just that his stats are impressive. And that I am not willing to write him off as a “non-prospect” yet due to his age.

            Like

            1. Nor am I. In fact I’m arguing to get him moved up ASAP and see what he can do the last 5/6 weeks of the season.

        1. Brown dominated AA and AAA as a 22 year old. Trying to compare Duffy’s 200 Ab’s @ LWD @ age 24 isn’t even possible. Saying that he’s tearing up a league he’s several years too old for is “elite” is also a stretch.

    2. Prior to this year he’s had 1 full season in the minors, hardly time to write him off… that said, I actually might bump him up to Reading and have him skip high A. He’s a 4 year college grad who is showing he’s the best hitter in the league he’s currently placed, to me that deserves a promotion. High A is probably the worst hitting league out there, Reading is more power friendly with better umpires and a less finiky strike zone. Don’t care what they decide to do with him for the remainder of the year, but next year, Reading here he should go… If he suceeds there, he will cement prospect status.

      1. No disrespect to Duffy – because I am enjoying the fireworks as much as anyone – but until he performs well in an age appropriate league, he is little more than a promising curiosity. Hopefully he can keep it up.

        Like

        1. That’s the point at 24 he needs to be moved up to be challenged . Just because he failed once at Clearwater doesn’t mean we should write him off . Also what super star will he be replacing at Clearwater ?

          Like

      2. I agree with challenging Duffy for a month in a park built for him, see how he responds in a month. It will be good information on him. I don’t think you have to worry about ruining a prospect here. Give him a challenge, some incentive, see if he has progressed as a hitter or if it’s just cleaning up on inexperienced guys. Reminds me of that older slugger two years ago, they moved him to Reading after he hit .300++ for a good while. I think he played n majors ast year in the AL. Name begins with an R.

              Like

            2. That may be true, but I don’t think that the Phils have defined Duffy as “org filler” as of yet and therefore there is no reason not to move him up for the remainder of the season into a more age appropriate league and see what he can do.

              Like

            3. His age-appropriate league at 24 is AAA and knocking on the door of the majors, not low-A ball. He 100% clearly is viewed as ‘org filler’.

      1. I was actually a little concerned with the size. Guys that are 6’1″ and 210 at 18 become 240+ by the time they are in their mid-20s. But it sure looks like he can play and is still on the younger side for the league.

  3. Rupp….Joe Jordan likes him a lot. Close, like in horseshoes, to the number one ‘c’ in the system.

    1. I believe that, next year, Kratz will be the back-up catcher in Philly (talk about “earning” something), Valle will be in AAA, Rupp will be in AA and, if Rupp does well, he will skip AAA altogether and be the back-up in 2014 while Valle continues to develop. Slowly but surely, the future catching situation and the third base issues are beginning to resolve themselves.

      Like

      1. Let Valle stay another year in AA. Catchers take longer than any other position to develop. He really hasn’t done anything that warrants a promotion. Strikes out 26% of the time and is carrying a .272 OBP.

        Like

      2. I hope so Catch. I was actually hoping that would be the case this year. Nothing against Schneider, but I understand that Kratz is at least passable as a receiver and his bat would be a nice compliment to Ruiz.

        Like

        1. The alternative would be for Rupp and Valle to share time in AA early next year and promote Rupp to AAA as soon as he shows he can hit. But, if you do that, you really risk having Valle “check out.” Frankly, I think Valle’s big issue is plate discipline, more than anything else. He might be able to work through that in two years at AAA. I have no expectation that Valle would be ready before 2015.

          Like

          1. I think Valle will be brought up much like Ruiz/Lieberthal. In September 2013 call up Valle to be 3rd Catcher. In 2014 have him backup Ruiz. In 2015 Have Ruiz backup Valle. I may be off by a year but it would be the most logical option

            Like

        2. I seem to recall hearing that Kratz can play first . If true, Kratz could also back up first base, while providing some power off the bench. This could allow the Phillies to carry three catchers or an extra player somewhere else.

            1. Isn’t his .195/ .247/ .315 a small hurdle in his quest to the MLB? I’m not sure “calling a good game”, whatever that actually may be, is enough to push his .562 OPS over the line.

              Like

            2. He is a great defensive catcher. No bat but pitchers love to throw to him. He is a great leader in the field. He is a younger better Brian Schneider. Could see Tuffy get the September call if Schneider is let go.

  4. We’ve seen Asche’s power jump when he got to Reading (ISO went from .098 to .185 in a SSS size). I wonder how Rupp’s power would translate.

    Like

    1. Probably pretty well. A guy like Hewitt will be helped also. He could be a 25 HR guy in Reading easily if he can cut the strikeouts a bit. Still might hit .230, but .230 with 25 HR is something.

  5. @Mark could point on Rupp’s power. Whens the last time the Phils had 2 potential major league catchers at AA and AAA?? With Valle and Rupp next year..
I think its def time to bump up Dugan and Duffy to Clearwater for the rest of the season, but that point has been made countless times before.

Delvi Francisco 1.2 IP with 3 strikeouts. Far as I know, went to Spring Training as an OF, was injured and returned as a Pitcher. But, figure they worked on it with him a few times before, but not much experience as a pitcher, so they might be able to re-configure a few things around with him and have a good arm to work with. The pitcher who followed , Carlos Best, also started as and OF, and another GCL pitcher, Luis Paulino started career as 3B.

  8. Duffy because of his age I would jump right to AA and make him sink or swim and Ruf because of his age I would move to AAA and see if he continues to hit. Unfortunately Ruf could have the Rizz curse which is not good enough defensively to play anywhere else but 1B.

  9. Brad – did I pickup a Tanya Harding reference there? How appropriate with the opening ceremonies today.

I don’t know what else to say about Duffy that hasn’t already been said, though I think we could start applying the same argument to William Carmona who is dominating the GCL as a 21yr old, though in his first taste of pro ball. Move these guys up already. Carmona should skip the NYPL all together.

    Like

    1. Oh yes, that was a Harding/Kerrigan reference, in the Olympic Spirit. Hmm…Olympic Spirit is probably not the right term for that.

I am anti-Duffy to AA since he had so much trouble in his A+ debut. But if they’re going to play Ruf in LF, then you can move Murphy to AA, Duffy to A+, Serritella to A- and Carmona to Williamsport today if you wanted. Being the end of the month, it’s a nice artificial “good time” for promotions, so maybe we’ll see this whole 1B thing play out over the next couple days.

    2. Good to see, but he definately stays here for the remainder of the year. I’d really like to see that sucess continue for in a bump up next year. He’ll be a 20 year old in clearwater, a full 3 years younger then the average. He’s definately a big time prospect in this system and if he can pull those slash lines next year for the entire year he’ll end up in the BA top 50.

    Like

    1. He has been picked off a few times, and has one caught stealing on a pitchout, though the announcers mentioned that it appeared he was safe on that play. He has not had a truly traditional “gotten thrown out” yet.

      Like

      1. Thanks. I was wondering if he was one of those guys that you just can’t throw out unless you pitch out/pick off. Guess so. Can’t wait to see him play.

        Like

        1. Funny thing is, I don’t think he’s a great base-stealer yet. He gets some bad jumps at times, but can make up for it with pure speed. Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman were base-stealers with exceptional speed. I think Quinn can eventually be that. Let’s be honest, speed makes up for a lot of things. He’s stolen a couple bases standing up this year, much to the ire of Andy Tracy. He’s a good base-stealer right now with the potentiall to be really, really good. But as with anything else in Quinn’s game it’s all about repetition.

  14. Jon Pettibone on BA Hot Sheet

    No. 10 JON PETTIBONE, RHP
    PHILLIES

    Team: Double-A Reading (Eastern)
    Age: 21
    Why He’s Here: 2-0, 0.71, 2 GS, 12 2/3 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 13 SO
The Scoop: Pettibone’s success in the Florida State League a year ago has carried over to this season, and the 21-year-old rebounded from an unexceptional April (1-3, 4.33) with three straight solid months. After a tremendous June (3-0, 1.67), Pettibone opened July with a poor start against Richmond but he has since strung together three excellent starts, out-dueling Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole on Wednesday night to pick up his ninth win of the season

Adam Morgan on the Helium Watch

When the Phillies drafted Alabama lefthander Adam Morgan in the third round of the 2011 draft, they knew they were taking a risk. At his best, Morgan showed excellent stuff in college, but he just as often was trying to survive with fringy stuff and poor control. The Phillies appear to have figured out how to get the good Morgan on the mound much more often than the bad one this year. Morgan has held his velocity more frequently—touching 93 mph—and he’s paired that with an excellent changeup that’s made him one of the better pitchers in the Florida State League. Pitching for Clearwater, the 22-year-old went 1-0, 1.29 this week with 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

    3. Interesting report on Morgan. Touching-93 wouldn’t be bad, but reports I’ve read seem to indicate he was touching 94-95, which would mean he was sitting 91-93, depending on the start. Touching 93 suggests he is sitting 90-91, which would really having him looking more like a #3/4 guy, at best.

      Like

      1. Not that 3/4 would be bad, by any stretch. But I feel as resident bus driver of the Morgan fan club, I was hoping the reports of increased velocity would have his upside as a 2/3.

        1. I agree, but his control would really have to be impeccable and he’d have to have 1 or 2 other solid pitches. I was thinking of Morgan as more of a #4/5, so painting his upside as a #3 is great news to me.

And that I was crazy for suggesting that?

Trying him there is smart ! in that 1- he brings righty power to the position; 2-he would be in “friendly” competition for the MLB SS position with Quinn. With his power, should Quinn win the face-off, he could move to 2nd base or LF or 3rd base, too.

ZGreen is a great piece to have and follow because so many of the promising field prospects are lefty hitters.
