Nice pitching performances by Kevin Brady and Chris Nichols shut down State College in game 2 of that doubleheader – 3 hits, 0BB and 9K between them in 7 scoreless innings. Elsewhere, Cody Asche climbs above the Mendoza line for the first time in AA and hits his 3rd HR in 10 games. He’s hit safely in 8 of those 10.

Yay for Asche – I’m sure if he shows some more pop in Reading, we’ll accept that for a tradeoff in batting average (currently: Reading ISO: .140, Clearwater ISO .098). Suppose he works the batting average up to .250 with has an ISO in the .160 area at Reading – to me that would give significant cause for excitement.
Oh yeah, and did anyone else find that Inquirer article about Larry Greene a bit annoying – they were really harping on his lack of power (amusingly enough, he hit his second homer the night before). Looking at everything else he’s done this year – solid hitting and plate discipline – I don’t think that any of us are two concerned that he’s not clobbering the ball. The power will come
And Dugan has certainly played his way back on to the radar. As long as he stays healthy, that is

That article is what happens when you get guys who are only in town for one day to write a story and only narrow your focus to one number determining the successes and failures of a player. It’s a hazard of the job, that’s why when you write a feature on someone you may only see play once, or even not at all, you have to ask more questions and the right questions. That story reads like someone knew what they were going to write before talking to anyone and didn’t change their mind after asking questions.

Mitch have you noticed a change in approach since Tracy had his tirade last week? I know it is a SSS size but in the past 5 games, walks have decreased down 1 or none per game as team over that period.
LikeLike
They were actually starting to pitch pretty well before the tirade. I believe over the last 12 games or so the walks have been about 2.5 per game. In the first 22 it was over 4.5 per game. So it’s been a couple weeks-long turnaround, not just a days-long turnaround.

I thought Mark was referring to the lack of our hitters taking walks, but I could be wrong.

My bad. No, haven’t noticed a change I approach. I think it has more to do with State College having a pretty good pitching staff that is generally around the plate. On top of that, the Pirates’ organizational philosophy at this level is to throw about 80 percent fastballs, so fastballs around the plate are going to be put into play more often, as well all know, than breaking balls. Now if you look at the first 4 games this year against State College, they averaged 4 walks a game. I think the difference can be chalked up to improvement and guys in that first series were seeing their first time of the year.
Long story short, no I haven’t seen a change in approach. The tirade seemed to be more levied at the mental part of the game than the physical part of the game.

I got that feel from the article too – it was annoying how the writer kept repeating, “Yeah, but only one homer?” and ignoring all of the other aspects of his game – some of which were covered in the article

That same writer also had a number of reader comments which pointed to his ignorance. For most Phillies phans, their only insight to happenings on the Pharm are the periodic updates they read in the local papers, so it was certainly disappointing to see an article written by someone who obviously knows very little about our prospects. If the writer wanted to be thorough he could have called any of 20 readers who ‘subscribe’ to Phuture Phillies.

Newspaper reporters have gotten extremely lazy nowadays. It was a poor article all around, but that (sadly) is pretty much par for the course with newspapers in general. I only get the Sunday paper for the coupons. There was a clear feel of “he’s not hitting homers, so it’s a disappointing year” in the article, whereas I (and most people here) are looking at the batting average, the respectable ISO, the on-base percentage, Mitch’s incredibly insightful reports and thinking to ourselves that LGjr is a stud.

And, if I can add, sportswriters are and never were athletes. They always wanted to be an athlete and rode the bench. Therefore, they are more critical of the real athletes without having an understanding of what it means to actually be in the field at an elite level. It is similar to the Liberal media reporting what they want you to hear and not the actual facts because they were either too lazy or had an agenda. In this case, they were too effen lazy.

Are you bitter because you’re stupid, or did some terrible tragedy make you both stupid and bitter. Or was it two separate tragedies?

I think you guys are overreacting. Yeah, it wasn’t the greatest article ever but I got the idea that he was bringing up the 1 HR thing as a joke more than a legitimate alarm. The writer spent as much or more time talking about how Greene’s improved his batting eye and working on his defense. Besides, it’s not like we haven’t all been talking about his homers. So it managed to touch on pretty much all the topics we’ve been discussing about him here anyway with a little human interest nugget mixed in. Since most of the readers don’t follow the minors like we do, I’m sure it was quite informative for a lot of people.

I don’t consider something informative if it is misleading. There is no real value in mentioning his home run total when discussing a 19 year old in his first pro season.

I thought it made sense the first time, as kind of a voice of the fan kind of thing, but ending the article with it was just strange. It would of been nice if would of compared his numbers to what some current major leaguers did in that stage of their career.

That could be useful or informative but just using home runs is still not enough. I do agree with your overall point though. Fixating on a sole number is useless

32 hits and 25 runs between Reading and Trenton. Would have loved to take that game in.

Yeah, but the blown leads by Reading would’ve left me disappointed. Still looks like a game that would have been a lot of fun to watch

Being there, it was kinda cool to see. The real suck fest was when in the 10th, Cesar let the tying run waltz home due to butter fingers.

In his last four games, Gauntlett Eldemire had 6 hits in 13 ABs, with an extra base hit in each game. Since that time (July 8) he has not appeared in a game. He appears to be on the 7 day disabled list. Anyone know why?

I see they sent Miguel Alvarez back from Clearwater. I hope it doesn’t mean Eldemire is out for a while.

Radio announcer said out for the season, back in Clearwater and has had surgery on a broken bone in his leg. Perdomo also had surgery on a finger.

Well that sucks. Gotta figure his career might be in jeopardy at this point.

I believe both have had what was called minor surgery

Nice line by Kevin Brady. Good to see only 2 walks in 9+ innings of professional ball as he at times struggled with his control at Clemson. He’s similar to Perci only in that he pitched limited innings in his collegiate career due to a myriad of injuries. Someone to keep an eye on though

Asche had BA’s top batting performance for a prospect outside its team’s top 30 this weekend. Shows how much he has climbed this year from being outside to definitely Top 10 in the system if he keeps up his recent surge.

Ok, now I’m starting to get legitimately excited about Asche. Not only is he starting to hit in AA, but he’s a little younger than I thought. Not quite 22 yet. Also, Dugan still on fire.

Brown wasn’t in the lineup today, hopefully they are just working him back in slowly and his knee is not acting up.

He had 3 ABs last night and then was pinch hit for, so I think there’s probably some bad news coming.

He aggravated his knee since he doesn’t know how to read a routine fly ball, then decided to dive after it when its a good 8 feet in front of him and turn a easy out into a triple. He was limping some after it, who knows what will come of it. It just boggles me to see him make a few good plays, then make a stupid one like he did yesterday.
Felt bad for Friend yesterday as he got roughed up pretty good after coming in after Brown’s boggle. Hit 92 on Lehigh’s gun (which probably means closer to 94, most of his FB sat around 90), but his control was all over the place to say the least.

If you don’t follow our own Mitch Rupert, 1) What the hell? and 2) You missed an outstanding flurry of tweets earlier this afternoon as he interviewed Joe Jordan. Summary: Jordan really likes his prospects.
(Hoping Mitch will provide a real summary later. Just wanted to give him props first.)
