Reading OF Tyson Gillies has been suspended for what is being called a “violation of team rules”. Gilles has had a myriad of injuries over the last few years and faced a significant “off the field” issue when he was arrested for cocaine possesion. Those charges were later dropped. Shuld be interesting to see how this one plays out….

The suspension is listed as being indefinite. Doesn’t sound good.

Mark that’s the first thing I saw. “Indefinite” has the ring of “Don’t Come Back. Ever.”

Mark I was thinking the same thing. “Indefinite” sounds eerily like “Don’t come back. Ever.”

Interesting that his twitter account no longer is up. I got a crazy idea, how bout we wait and see what he did before we start insulting him. No one knows what he did yet. For all we know they’re using this “indefinite” suspension to hopefully give him a wake up call. Too much talent to give up on, even with the “b/s excuses”.

Now that we know what it was, shall we continue making excuses b/c he talent? Pathetic…

To put it bluntly…..yes. No team in professional sports is going to give up on a talented player for aguring with a bus driver. Watch the news every now and than, how many professional athletes get arrested in any given offseason? And they’re playing at the highest level, not some AA kid who’s probably frustrated to all hell trying to stay on the field.
The attitude of some of the posters on here is what’s pathetic. You don’t have to like every player, you can be frustrated with their development or lack there of, but name calling and insulting them? Really? There’s a lot more of this kind of stuff going on since James gave up the site and it’s taking the fun out of it.

I don’t know that I would get so upset about calling them names, it’s not like they are all reading this site all day and are going to get offended. This is a site for discussion of opinions about Phillies prospects and everyone is entitled to their opinions, including you. I find it far worse when we start insulting one another, especially considering we all share the same passion to spend the time we do here reading the great information this site has to offer and all of the great and varied opinions of the posters.
So calm down dude, have a beer, and enjoy.

Was calm when I wrote it. You’re right that everyone is entitiled to their opinion, but I don’t see how insults and name calling add anything to any conversation. I guess to some people, “moron” is analytical and “pathetic” is some great insight. Time for that beer haha.

Let’s not over-react. Remember Cole Hamels’ minor league career. This is obviously not good and the kid has had lots of obstacles to overcome, but none of us know any of the facts or nuances here.

I remember a 16 year old Hamels breaking his arm in a fight defending a friend. I dont remember him drunk on the side of a highway in Clearwater.

My God!! A 21-22 year old kid drunk on the side of the highway!! The shame!! Like Gillies is the first prospect to go out and get hammered. Try to remember these are just kids, not all of them are going to make smart decisions all the time. Let ye who is without sin cast the first stone and all that fun nonsense….

That would be a very good point…if this was the first violation he has had. Its not.

True it’s not his first infraction which is why I think whatever this is is more of a wake up call. Sit his ass down and let him think about what he did. Until we find out what he did, I’m hesitant to form any real opinion aside from preaching patience.

Ahh, the court of public opinion, where you’re guilty even after proven innocent. Ignorance is lovely.

Not that I agree with jumping to conclusions about Gillies. However, “proven innocent”????no one is ever proven innocent in our judicial system. Not guilty and innocent are two different concepts. Prosecutors must prove guilt. If the evidence is insufficient to prove guilt, they lose their case. Numerous killers and thieves have received a verdict of not guilty because prosecutors failed in their job or juries had a reasonable doubt. Sorry, pet peeve of mine.

True but this is not a court case.

He tested clean at the station following the arrest, and the bag was found in the back of a cop car. I’m pretty confident in saying he was innocent.

I thought Hamels and a few other minor league players got into a bar fight after some back and forth heckling and he broke his pitching hand.

Hamels broke his pitching hand in a brawl outside a bar when he was at Clearwater in January of 2005. It cost him much of the season.

What can the Phils do to salvage this amazing talent who has overcome so much?

We all assumed his injuries were bad luck. Whether he has been taking care of himself and doing the preparation it takes to be in shape, can now be called into question as we see more and more of these issues…

The concussion was bad luck. Not much of an assumption to be made there.

Are we to then assume that every player with an injury history simply has a bad work ethic?
The fact that Gillies has found trouble a couple of time now is concerning but it’s completely unrelated to his inability to remain healthy.

And actually his inability to stay healthy might be influencing bad behavior. I present the Josh Hamilton case.

Let’s revisit something. A very frustrated RAJ said something last year that hinted at him not working hard to get back and play. There is more here than meets the eye. A guy getting suspended for getting in a mess with the bus driver didn’t really get suspended for just getting in a mess with the bus driver.

Lots of speculation there. You’re free to do it. But I think it’s overblown until we learn more. Like even how long the suspension will last.

As some of the more level-headed posters above suggested, it’s probably best to wait until we hear what he’s been suspended *for* before passing judgment, but statements like this really get me. He seems for all the world like a good kid, well-liked by teammates and a hard worker. His career is easily the most baffling story I’ve seen since I started following the minors.
Still wish the best for him, but I don’t think the Phillies would be depriving him of playing time for a minor infraction at this point.

Wow…dont even know what to think. I was so excited to see him back in action and now this. Im all for forgiving guys and giving them another shot, they are in fact college age kids…Im sure we have all done some dumb things. But, if you can’t straighten up after a major indescretion to me it points to either a lack of character or an underlying issue that creates an inability to stop (alcoholism/substance addiction). I know we don’t know details but you don’t get an indefinite suspension for being late to practice or missing curfew. If it is alcohol or drug related, I hope he can find help, would be a shame to waste all that talent.

You could if it’s a continuing problem. Could also be a combination of things. I check his twitter every now and than and he seems to have a little Vic in him. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s an overall maturity thing. Kind of like “we’ve had enough of the nonsense, it’s time for you to grow up”.

Let’s hold off on the moralizing. Salisbury on Twitter suggests it’s unrelated to “earlier issues”, meaning drugs. So we really have no idea. Frankly, he’s an adult, so I could care less what he does with his nose or any other orifice. The only thing that matters here is that it adds to his loss of development time, and to the mounting body of evidence that Gillies doesn’t take his career seriously enough.

“…Gillies doesn’t take his career seriously enough.”
That hits it on the head! No, we cannot jump to conclusions about what the issue might be, but does it really matter?? You are a professional baseball player who has an opportunity to something great, and you’re throwing it down the tubes. Yes, you’re a kid. Yes, you’re going to do stupid things. We’re not going to bash you over it, but at the same time there are literally thousands of other prospects and minor leaguers who DON’T have these issues.
Get your sh$t together and start getting serious about baseball.

If that’s all it is I don’t see it being lenghty. Maybe a week or two. Probably want to teach him a lesson. Still not good he’s missing time but at least it’s not an alcohol or drug thing.

If it’s because of an altercation with the Reading bus driver, then move hime to LHV. that’ll fix his wagon. I don’t mean to make light of this but I find it hard to put Gillies in my top 30 because he can’t stay on the field. Injuries, legal matters and now team rules although I think the legal matter was when he was rehabbing an injury so that probably doesn’t count. It’s like trying to find a spot for Nick Hernandez in the top 30. He’s a talented lefty but hasn’t played in 3 years.

We have met Gillies in clearwater during spring training on multiple occasions. He is talented and was always a good guy. His first incident shocked me and now another suspension. He could be starting in cf soon if he can stay healthy and out of trouble. He has overcome alot and deserves a chance, unfortunately it might not be at cbp.

I will be very curious to see how long this lasts. If it’s a couple days and he’s back and the team moves on quickly, then I think you can chalk it up to a bad decision and tick off the “questionable character” box if you like when looking at him as a prospect.
Lumping this in with the cocaine beef, which could very easily have been not his cocaine from my perspective, would be quick judgment.

Everyone can “lose it”. We don’t know the particulars so comments as to right or wrong are uninformed. The designation of the infraction as being not a team, but an organizational policy adds seriousness. I remember an incident of the same nature occurring with Kevin Angell, in which the organizational rules were violated and the player was dismissed.
Another aspect of this is that Gillies is hard of hearing. Depending on his level of hearing, he may tend to raise his voice above a level that would keep a situation under control. He may also think he heard something said that was different than what was actually said. It will be up to the Phillies to figure what went on and what exactly happened. I’m sure they will act professionally.
These situations are difficult in a top-down organization where rules need to be upheld. I wish everyone the wisdom to make a good decision for the player, the organization and the driver.

Teams don’t suspend prospects, especially ones of Gillies’ caliber, after a run-of-the-mill shouting match. If that’s really what it has to do with, I think its safe to assume it was a pretty bad incident. In a way, I find that more troubling than the run-in with the police last year. However you feel about the drugs, we can all admit that it’s not out of the ordinary for 20-something kids to get drunk at bars and make poor decisions. Over the top mistreatment a team employee–especially one who arguably below you in the power structure–says a lot more about character, I think.
Or it could all be a big misunderstanding. I hope so!
