And they wasted a nice pitching performance by Hollands. They actually out hit their opponent 8 – 5 and received a BB and 2 HBPs. Grounding into 3 DPs will kill rallies fast..
He’s definitely got it going on since coming back from the DL. You almost want to get him on the big club’s everyday LF role right now and allow him to build that confidence up there.
My only reservation with calling him up is that someone said in a thread the other day that he’s wearing a knee brace in the field and running somewhat gingerly. I wouldn’t want him to push himself after a call-up and aggravate his injury.
But yeah, when he’s 100% he should definitely be in Philly. But then, I thought he should have started the year in Philly.
Colvin pitched well. In the recap, only three hits are listed as “line drives”, three are infield hits, and one of the two doubles he gave up is listed as “Cody Rogers doubles (10) on a pop up to shortstop Edgar Duran.” Just reading the recap makes it sound like Duran is an adventure at SS.
That’s valuable information, I was actually going to post asking if anyone had seen the Clearwater game, so we could figure out whether he was hit hard. Sounds like it was just one of those bad luck nights. Colvin getting it back together is one of the most heartening developments we’ve had all season.
Also, I’m randomly friends with Pettibone on fb and stumbled upon a picture on Hewitt’s page (http://i.imgur.com/RuUXZ.jpg). Holy. S*#t. Freakish arms/hands/entire stature. If he ever gets a hint of a batting eye my god. Back on board with him even if it takes a few more years.
Athletic body, yes, but hardly “freakish” in my book. And tell me again why I should get excited about the size of a baseball player’s hands, especially a non-pitcher?
Dugan has become a player to watch. He is at .286/.370/.469/.839 on the year with 8hr. It’s only his first full season in the minors, definitely worth keeping an eye on.
He’s still 21 for another couple months, so not very old for the league. And this is his first year with 200 or more ABs. If the injury problems are behind him he’s absolutely a guy to watch.
Have you seen a box score so sprinkled with one guys name unfortunately not all of it was good. Hewitt was 3 – 4 with a SB. He also had his 16th error and CS. I’ll put this in the good column. anytime he makes contact 4 times in a game, that’s a good game. He’s getting into a hot spell again. In his last 5 games he’s hitting .400 ( 8-20) but if you look at the last 10, he’s hitting .214. I wish his hot streaks would surpass his cold streaks but then again I wish for 0% unemployment, the Phillies to win every game the rest of the year and world peace.
Anyone notice since BJ demotion he has been starting and pitching quite well. I know they like his fastball. Seen it 95/96. Just needs secondary sharpness. When Cole and Heavy B are traded do u think Tyler and Bj wil be promoted? Will they trade Juan and bring up Dom, can’t take AAAberry starting anymore. abs are awful.
Walding in an 0-for-15 slump. Here’s where we see what he’s made of from mentally. Serritella goes yard again, he’s now .317/.393/.550 with 5 HR. He’s making a strong case to be Clearwater’s starting 1B next year, based on his age and college experience.
They’re entirely different players and he was just drafted, get off it. Please pick a damn name so I can either take it easy on you or call you out on it.
Longtime reader (5 years) but first time poster. The box scores post is the first thing I check every morning. Love the site and I’m glad it has transitioned into capable hands.
I attended the Reading Phillies vs. Trenton Thunder game last night and I took some notes with the intention of sharing them here with everyone.
– First and foremost, I thought Hulett as the leadoff hitter was an odd choice. Always thought of him as more of a middle of the order hitter.
– I was impressed with Cesar Hernandez’s ability to make adjustments. In his first at bat, I believe he attempted two bad looking bunts, but then shortened up his swing, picked his pitch and slapped a single between 3rd and short.
– There’s a lot of debate on whether or not Darin Ruf should be taken seriously as a prospect. I’m not quite sure how I even feel. But one thing is for certain – the Thunder think he is dangerous. They pitched around him if someone was on base. He walked in his first at bat, and all 4 balls were low and outside.
– Jiwan James has a very quick bat. His swing looks effortless. Can’t believe he doesn’t have better numbers. He fouled a few balls straight back. If that kid ever puts it all together, watch out. Kind of makes me wonder if he has vision issues, since the bat speed is there.
– Leandro Castro looks smaller than 5’11” 175. Smoked some balls, but he just doesn’t look the part of a major league regular. 4th outfielder projections seem about right.
– Cody Asche seems to be following the same pattern as last year – started off smoking hot and then tempered off. This year though it just seems he needs time to adjust to AA pitching. Not worried about him at all. This time next year we’ll probably be talking about why he isn’t on the big club already. Defensively, he wasn’t afraid to throw his body around but he’s no Scott Rolen. Really excited about him, and really excited to see if anyone will start a Asche’s Elbows fan club in the nose bleeds at The Bank.
– Valle is reaffirming his status as the top catcher in the system. Rupp is exciting, but I just have this feeling that he’ll never become more than Todd Pratt. After a slow start, Valle has been showing a pretty sweet stroke. Looked real good all around last night.
– Before the game started, I told my friend at the game that Mario Hollands wasn’t much of a prospect. He then went on to surrender just 2 hits through 6 innings. So naturally, I tried to figure out what was making him so effective. There’s no radar gun there, so I dont know what his velocity was, but it seems any success he’ll have is tied into his delivery. He hides the ball the entire time. Very deceptive to the hitter. Of course, as I said that out loud to my friend, Hollands gave up what went on to be the game winning home run. Yes, you can all blame the loss on me.
– There was a moment in the game where a Thunder player hit a weak foul grounder up the first base line between Hulett and the Thunder 1st base coach. Hulett went to grab it, and the 1st base coach stepped on the ball and kicked it away from him. They exchanged some words. I laughed heartily.
There you go, that’s all I really have for you guys. The only other thing is that if we trade any players to the Yanks at the deadline, I would want SS Addison Maruszak in return. He’s having a good year with the bat, and his defense looked above average and seamless. Could be the super utility guy with power that we’ve needed forever.
Thanks for the first-hand report! There are a lot of guys I believe have the potential to be solid position big leaguers on this Reading team: Asche, Hernandez, Valle, even Gillies (although the team bus driver might disagree). I love Ruf’s bat, and am hoping he can learn an adequate LF in the fall.
Thanks for the update and post more often, and don’t be fearful of the derisive comments by a few. BTW…Addison Maruszak could be had pretty easily I would think..he is an older prospect at this point, will be 26.
It’s Matt Ocharski. @anon1 – obviously I’d only want Maruszak as a secondary piece in a trade, but I’d love to see what he’d do at the major league level as a Mark DeRosa type super sub.
I’m going to try to hit a Lakewood, Lehigh Valley, and Williamsport game before the year is through. I’ll post notes on those as well! Thanks for the encouragement. So glad to finally be a member of the community.
I was at the game also last night. Hollands made one mistake , but it was a big one . He grooved a pitch and it was a line drive out of the ballpark. I would guess Hollands throws 88 -90. Why doesn’t Trenton get a speed gun? Valle, James, Hernandez and Castro have nice swings. Asche looks lost. Hans. and Hernandez turned two smooth dp’s with pressure from the runners. Ceasar’s arm may be a notch above Galvis. Shreve is a cool customer. He only needed 1 out,but he gave the Phil’s one more chance with runners aboard. Reading is just like the major league team. They produce one base at a time. Hardly take any pitches and sometimes do not do the fundamental things correct . Asxhe almost got killed he showed the bunt so early. What does a pitcher do if he see’s the batter squared around? It was a good game but their pitcher was a little better.
May is still far ahead of Colvin. Colvin is repeating single A, and has struggled. At Colvin’s age, May repeated single A and dominated. Colvin would have to dominate the rest of the year to be comparable to May.
May is fine. If you want him in the big leagues right now then, no, he’s not fine. He’s not going to the big leagues this year or even next year. At the beginning of the year, James but up a thread on May and how we thought he’d perform. He’s done exactly what I expected. I said he’d start out dominating and then he’d hit an adjustment period before ending the season strong. I thought it would take him until August before he adjusted. Although I thought he’d dominate for only a few starts, he was strong for quite a few starts. Let’s give him time to readjust and take a deep breath.
One thing I notice about him and I’m going to catch a lot of flak on this, is his lack of unearned runs. I’ve mentioned it before. He’s given up 2 UERs this year. Pettibone’s given up 9. May has historically given up very few UERs. He’s either the luckiest b*stard-o on the face of the earth or something else is going on. I attribute it to a guy who can get his own outs. He can always K the next guy to render an error harmless. It’s worked throughout his career. May might be the only guy in the organization with that ability. It’s good to induce the double play grounder, and there are a number of guys in the organization who can do that, but striking out the side to end an extended inning is solid gold. It’s what makes him a possible top starter.
Regarding the second paragraph, I agree but for slightly different reasons. Not that I believe there is any special talent in avoiding unearned runs, but the whole distinction is somewhat artificial. A pitcher allows an infield hit, SB, ground out advancing the runner, fly out, earned run. Hard hit double, single which doesn’t score the runner, line drive dropped by the left fielder, unearned run. Okay, and extreme example, but runs allowed IMO is a better measure than ERA.
It’s the first paragraph that I’m going to give you flak about. Say what you will about adjustments, your number one prospect/potential top of the rotation starting pitcher should not be allowing more than 5 BB per nine innings. Sure, he could still get it together, and his upside probably is still what it is. But he’s IMO much less likely to hit that upside than we thought before the season began.
I wonder personally if there is a high correlation between k/rate and Unearned runs scoring. I would think a pitcher with a higher k/rate would allow less unearned runs to score just because a higher % of their outs are coming without the potential for moving up the basepaths.
Jiandido Tromp is turning it around. Was hitting .080, with a 44.4% K rate in June. In July he now has nearly the same amount of extra-base hits as Ks (9Ks, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 2Hrs). Has a .632 Slg%, .382 ISO and 23% K rate, in July.
Tromp may get a .700 OPS, before he gets his avg to .200.
Why Dom Brown must be promoted – take a look at tonight’s line up and replace Pierre with Brown as the seven hitter. That’s a scary line up. They can’t afford to wait m uch longer on this.
Good time Charlie will never sit Pierre’s empty .300 avg down for Dom. Even though Polanco and Pierre are the same frickin hitter. Doms not coming up unless Victorino gets traded.
Good line from Franklyn Vargas today – 5 no-hit innings, 4k, 1BB, 7 groundball outs. He’s 17 for another month, (and oh heck, yesterday was my dad’s birthday and I didn’t call), an his K/9 stands at 9.0. BB/9 is now 5.9 ish. That needs to come down, but he’s an interesting guy from the numbers and someone to keep an eye on.
If you were to follow me on Twitter, @bxe1234 you could have this same analysis in many fewer characters, and without the bit about my dad. Exciting, I know. I’ll try to post news items there if I am posting them here, and also mention when boxes go up when I remember. Plus I Tweet about the Phils in general some., and occasionally about politics, film/tv, general nonsense. You know, what people do on Twitter.
