Domonic Brown activated

Just a quick note that OF Domonic Brown has been activated and is expected in the Lehigh Valley lineup this evening after missing a month with a knee injury.  Brown is looking to turn around another injury filled season with a strong final 7 weeks of the minor league season.  I suspect with three strong weeks and the strong possibility of outfielders being traded from the Phils, we may see Brown in Philly sooner rather than later.

  1. There is a weird coincidence with Dom being activated for tonights game in Durham. Domonic was called up to AAA in 2010 and his first game was in Durham. When he got sent down in 2011 after the Pence trade his first game back was in Durham. And now he gets reactivated after a long DL stint that was caused during a game vs. Durham, and his first game back will be in Durham… weird

    1. Evan failed to mention that there are only two teams in the league, LHV and Durham. Kidding……

  2. The calculus here is so easy. As soon as Dom Brown shows he is healthy and is comfortable in the outfield he needs to be promoted. When your team is struggling and the guy in the minors with the bright future will, upon his arrival, likely be at least as good as what you currently have (Mayberry and Pierre), the decision is made for you. I expect the Phills will see this in a similar light. If Brown looks good at the plate and okay in the field, I expect him to be our starting left fielder by early August. And, if he stays healthy, don’t be surprised to see Tyson Gillies get some playing time in the big leagues in September. Gillies can play.

    1. I would put that as “if he looks good at the plate and doesnt kill another fielder in the outfield”, I expect him in LF soon.

But that’s just me. I expect Vic and Pierre will both be traded by the deadline to contenders…Nix will be back and will make a nice platoon partner for Domonator.

      1. Both L Nix and D Brown are left handed bats so I don’t think they really work as a platoon. Howevor with Pence and Mayberry ( both righthanded) being your other outfeilders remaining under your trade assumptions it is possible they could both play on the same day since Charlie doesn’t seem to understand the defensive importance of Right and Center field (See, Jenkins, Francisco, Pence, etc)

      2. Nepp93 doesn’t understand a platoon or doesn’t know Nix and Brown are both lefthanded. WOW!

    2. i’m not a brown fan…… however as you said with the phils struggling like they are and with vic possibly on the block for a veteran relief pitcher. i’m all in on brown getting another shot with the phils! like you said can he be any worse. only thing is i’d put him in center! he said he seems more comfortable there and he did play better defensively while in center so do it! personally i’d like to see mayberry shipped out and leandro castro brought up to play left. whatta you think?

  3. Dom Brown is one of the key figures in the fortunes of the the Phillies’ big club’s past and present. He was the expected injection of All Star play at a controlled low salary for several years. His successful inclusion in the lineup would have helped make the other high salaries doable. His success would also have likely alleviated the need to go out and trade for Hunter Pence last year. Without the need for that trade, we would likely still have Singleton, Cosart and Santana. Without Pence’s salary, there would have been more money to spend on Hammels, a 3b, middle relief a LF in some combination this year,
Going forward, if Dom could put it together at the ML level, he could have a similar impact. These low cost, high performance players are one of the most important assets a team can have. I am crossing all body parts in the hope that Dom can realize the potential that made him the # 1 prospect in all of baseball back in 2009-2010.

        1. He was a luxury. They would have been fine adding a complementary right handed bat like a Cody Ross in 2010.

          1. Exactly. Hell, even adding a guy like Bourn would have made more sense from a cost standpoint.

            1. If they were willing to sacrafice defense, they also could have went after a Josh Willingham or (hindsight 20/20) send Cosart to NY for Beltran.

    1. The Pence trade was the example of managerial hubris on the part of our GM in his need to look like he was doing something. He massively overpaid for a complementary player in a trade that will likely haunt the franchise for the next 10 years.

But year, we “needed” to make that deal.

      1. The Pence trade was fine, and we were a better team last year because of him, and we are a better team this year because of him, and we will be a better team next year because of him.

        1. Yes, because of him, we made it all the way to the NLDS last year…and he’s carrying us to last place this year. It was a trade that didnt need to be made, that was the point people are making. We win the division either way last year with or without him.

            1. It certainly is not his fault the team is struggling, though wish his RISP were a bit better.

            2. We have to separate the two items here that aren’t really related.

              1. Is Hunter Pence a decent player that made us better last year and better this year? Yes, absolutely.

              2. Is he a star player worthy of 4 prospects and in the future, a $15M+ multi year contract? Hell no.

Had he hit a HR in Game 5 of the NLDS or some other heroic feat that lead to a World Series Championship in 2011, we could revisit and argue the answer to #2 above.

      2. The Ironic part about the trade was that it was Dom’s defense that was really what was the problem, and they replaced him with an equally bad defensive player. Yes we were a slightly better team last year and still lost in the wild card round. Don’t even talk about this year, and who know if we are better team next year, two years of Dom in the ML might have produced better play for next year and more money to spend else where to improve the team.

      3. If I remember it was Charlie Manuel who was screaming for a right handed bat last year but everyone was after Pence last year.

    2. I was not arguing the “need” to make the Pence deal in my original post. I was simply stating that, had the Phils had a heavy hitting Dom Brown in the lineup, as anticipated once upon a time, Pence would not have been a consideration. Further, the Phils would have far greater financial flexibility. The merits of or the prudence of the Pence trade are a separate debate.

      1. True on both points. The Phil’s made the trade not to win the division, but to win it all. The trade was made, if you care to remember, because the line up was heavy to the left side And at the trade deadline they were getting beat by Triple a left handers called up to solely face the Phil’s.

      1. Thanks for the well thought out and insightful commentary Big Red! What would we do without that addition? FWIW, I know how to spell Hamels, I just don’t have the time to proofread everything I type. I did not know there was a spelling grade on Phuture Phillies blog postings. I would venture to say that the majority of the misspellings and grammatical errors on this and all other sites result from a desire to get the point across quickly and concisely without spending time reading every word. I wish I could say I will try to do better in the phuture, but likely I will not. Maybe you could add something of importance to a discussion?

          1. Well, it’s hard to take a poster’s position on a player seriously when he or she repeatedly spells a person’s name incorrectly. The typographic and grammatical errors are, as one poster noted, a byproduct of trying to post while we are engaged in more serious pursuits (i.e., school or a job). Most people overlook that stuff.

    3. agreed. but the past is done! it would be nice to have those players still, but we don’t . so with that said hopefully if he gfets the call he’ll do better this time. i said it in another post that i wasn’t a big brown fan. i never had issue with his bat! it was his attitude and defensive lapses. if he can do better in the field and have a better attitude. then that would be great! some of the best players ever struggled then got sent down only to come back as great players. hopefully dom takes advantage of a second chance and becomes the player people thought he should be. i’m mean it’s not like the kid doesn’t have the tools! he does he just has to utilize them. and don’t hand with j-roll.

  4. I was listening to the Iron Pigs game on WNPV(1440 AM) and Dom was having a good game. He was 1-2 with a walk, a near homer that was hit so hard he only got a single out of it and another hard hit out. I hope he can stay healthy so he can help the Phillies.

  5. One month before his major league debut In late June 2010, Domomic Brown was quoted saying how baseball was humbling “I mean I can’t believe I’m 22 and still not in the majors” is approximately what Brown said ‘ or words to that effect. Maybe his exact quote was “I’m 22 and I’m still at AAA” or “still at Lehigh Valley”. How depressed must he be now that he is still at Lehigh Valley and is about to turn 25 in six weeks.
After unsuccessful trials in 2010 & 2011 the Phillies really need to find out if he is capable of playing at the major league level once and for all. July 31/August 1 should be a critical time for Brown. Either the Phillies should offer him in a trade package at that time or if they really want to hold on to him, after the dust settles from all their other trade deadline moves they should bring him up and see what he can do over the final two months of the season. If there are still doubts that he can be an everyday major leaguer, then the Winter Meetings are a good opportunity to see how other teams value Brown and see what the Phillies can get for him.
