Box Score Recap 7-14-2012

VSL PHILLIES DOUGLAS PARADA THROWS NO HITTER!!!  Ok, it’s in the VSL and he’s 19 years old already, facing at least 5 guys who are at least 2 years younger than him, and facing a team with a .241 winning percentage, but still.  Way to go.

  1. At some point we must recognize that dominance is still a good sign. perfecto with 14 k’s? with 9 ground balls and 3 flyouts? So they hit a max of three balls out of the infield?

    1. I’m not sure what the big deal about the guy throwing a no-hitter and being older than his competition is – Nolan Ryan was throwing no-hitters when he was in his 40s. ;^)

    2. A no-hitter is an accomplishment in pro-ball irrespective of the competition. But, it also helps to have perspective when considering what his performance might mean in the grand scheme of things.

Parada’s competition was the VSL Rays who are last in runs scored in the league, nearly a full run per game less than the next worst team. Even more telling, the VSL Rays have 100 more strike outs than the next worse team and are last in nearly every meaningful team hitting statistic.

    1. THat was my observation, kid is 25, kick him up already to clearwater already, he is killing the pitching at Lakewood and hes already that age….

    1. So that ball bounced off the top of the wall, trapped against his body and rolled down his arm to his right hand? that’s the only way I can make any sense of that video. . . unless it was some kind of magic.

      1. I’m not going to watch that video anymore. It hurts my brain. The only thing I could think of is that James has a second ball in his pants (or a third ball depending on how you look at it) and pulled it out after the struck ball left the yard. Crazy play

        1. Good – I’m not the only one perplexed by that video – it looks like it bounces, his glove disappears, and he crashes to the ground with the ball in his throwing hand. I think. I watched it like five times. I’m still not sure what happened there

          1. I think he actually missed it entirely with his glove and just barehanded it when he missed. You can see it go past his glove in the slow-mo.

            1. The balls appears to tip off his glove, hit the top of the fence, bounce back up and hit his glove again – causing him to lose the glove and causing the ball to fall against him and find its way into his right hand.

      2. Was ESPNs top play last night… It looks like the ball hit the outside of his glove, knocked it off his hand, then the ball fell down into his right hand, as he falling to the ground.

        1. Somebody should ask him on twitter. I would but he blocked me a month ago cuz I told him he needs to take more walks…..

      3. It looks like a hidden ball trick. Great catch though. I hope he doesn’t land on the DL because of it.

    2. Awesome. I did a double take when I saw Ruf run up to him, and went up and realized he did indeed play LF. I always look to see what Ruf did offensively, but I have it in my head that he’s always at 1B. Now that’s another thing I’ll have to check…

@mldrago How did he look out in LF? Hopefully they’ll give him extended time up there because he is obviously blocked in the bigs at 1B.

        Mike Drago ‏@mldrago
@jmb4028 He looks like he could be adequate out there, not much more. Only played 4 games there, so it’ll take some time to get up to speed

    3. Mind Blown. Maybe it was a home run and he forgot to throw in the pre inning warmup ball, haha. The world may never know…

      1. I watched the play in slow motion. It appears Jiwan jumps, traps the ball between his chest and the wall and when trapped it was supported by his forearm, and then simply out of DeWayne Wise, during Buehrle’s perfect game luck he came down with the ball. Simply Amazing!!!!!!

        1. Agree. I don’t think it was a catch but we’ll probably never know unless JJ makes mention of it

        2. thats what I saw. The balls looks to hit wall and his body which was pinned against the wall and fell into his hand. An unreal play. Might not have been a true catch…it did show alot of athleticism by James.

  2. Franco’s season is reminding me of Cesar’s last year … young for the league, struggles out the gate, then puts it together during the second half. I’m loving what I’m seeing out of this kid right now.

They need to get Dom out of the GCL before he gets bored.

    1. Brown’s average is dropping like a stone. He’s down to .579. But seriously, If he plays back to back games in the field, then they’ll move him back to AAA. The GCL usually doesn’t play on Sunday so we won’t really know for a while.

  3. Since his demotion to Williamsport, Tyler Greene’s strikeout rate has actually worsened and his BB rate has plummeted. For the year, 72 Ks in 170 PAs. Stats that would make Hewitt look like a promising prospect. I hate to say it but the red flags are starting to pile up here.

    1. He must have an incredibly long swing. They like his power potential but right now I’d like to see more contact potential. Larry Greene has massive power potential but right now it’s more important to make contact. One of these days soon, Larry will hit a couple of balls that will carry out of the park and it will be because he met the ball and they flew over the fence. Make contact first and the big knocks will come all by themselves. Tyler has to get that approach and he’ll be fine.

      1. His swing is actually pretty compact, quick stroke A to B. biggest thing for him is he watches pitches go down the middle and swings at breaking stuff in the dirt. Sometimes it’s almost like he decides before the pitch is thrown that he’s going to swing no matter where the ball is. He looks like he is just constantly guessing instead of see it and hit it.

When I talked to him the other day he was still very confident in himself. He’s well aware of his struggles, he’s well aware of what’s causing his struggles, he’s just now in fix it mode.

I can see why others have mentioned about him having an attitude problem in the past. He walks around sometimes like he has “Fu** off” written on his forehead, but he couldn’t have been nicer to talk to. He was real engaging and open and honest. I don’t know if he’ll come out of his funk, but he works hard every day. He definitely hasn’t thrown in the towel.

        1. This is exactly how I felt when I watched a few games of him on Milb.com. He swung at some ridiculous pitches, then watched some right down the middle. At this point, it is not surprising that he doesn’t have strong pitch recognition.

        2. Thanks Mitch, this clears some things up and encourages me. It sounds like he’s a pretty bad guess hitter. He’s guessing fastball and gets the curveball in the dirt and strike 3… sit your butt down. With a nice compact and quick swing, he should be able to wait on the pitch longer and then it’s all about pitch recognition. I was watching a Mets / Phils game a little more than a week ago and the Mets announcers mentioned something that my High School coach advocated. He told the pitchers to talk to hitters and hitters to talk to pitchers. He told us that you can learn a lot about what your opponents thinking just by talking to the types of guys you can face. Tyler might learn a lot from some seasoned pitchers on how they would pitch to him. Most of the 4 year seniors are relievers in Wmsprt so they don’t face the same batter twice in the same game very often. He may have to do it more in EST. Andy Tracy might be the best resource a hitter can find so try and talk to him often. Could we also get some rehabbing veterans out to Wmsprt? That seems to help some of the minor league guys.

          1. I’m not sure that response encourages me, actually, it further discourages me. It’s very, very difficult to teach plate discipline and pitch recognition at any level, whether Little League or the Majors. Though I’d be the first to admit that his struggles can certainly be a result of something more rudimentary, there are certainly some alarming red flags at this point in his career. Hopefully he has a better 2nd half.

            1. Plate discipline does seem to be a talent more so than a learned skill. Given how disappointing his season has been, I am happy to hear he still has confidence and is willing to work at it.
At least some of his other tools may allow him to make it even with poor discipline.

    2. Look at the bright side. T Greene will probably have to repeat Williamsport, so that will clear up the SS log-jam in Lakewood next year.

    1. Championship! If big Larry keeps up the batting eye that he’s displayed so far the pitchers will have to start giving him pitches worth swinging at – look out folks sitting in the upper deck.

            1. He did OK last night. Seven-pitch at-bat in his next at-bat that turned into an infield single. Took a walk on five pitches in his fourth at-bat. He jumped at a pitch in his last at-bat like he does from time to time. But his approach didn’t seem to change.

    1. Depends on who he is dominating. Remember he beat the worst team in the league with his no-hitter and he did not get promoted this year. If the Phillies consider him a prospect he will probably get a shot at GCL next year. Hard to tell if they do, however. If he gets an invite to fall instructional league that will be a good sign.

    1. Short season added a bunch of guys playing so that makes the chances of a single good performance much higher.
It certainly does not hurt to still have the glow that the really young guys might be ‘special’. Here’s to hoping they reach their potential.
