If I’m not incorrect, this is the SECOND time this guy has been sent all the way back to Single A in his career. Really hope he finally figures it out.
That will probably be Kevin Brady’s last appearance at GCL. He’s only there due to coming off an injury, and WPT needs a lot of pitching help. Milner with a strong first start in LWD. Musser is a complete mess right now.
Wasn’t Musser one of those guys from the 2010 draft who signed late because we couldn’t sign Scott Frasier? If I’m not mistaken Pointer was the other guy.
Collier is tempting me to go all fanboy on him. He has reached 150 PAs, which means his contact rate, K%, and LD% can be considered statistically significant (though 150 is no magic cutoff as good fortune can last longer than that).
Contact rate is 81%, highest in his career and in line with the average at the MLB level. Last year it was 76%.
K% is 16.6% according to fangraphs, the lowest in his career. Last year he was at 21.0%.
LD% is at 17% according to firstinning.com, the highest in his career. Last year he was at 14%.
HE IS NOW THE GREATEST PROSPECT IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND
Want to be even more on board? Go to baseball reference and sort the FSL by OPS. Then look at the ages. Doing really well there, and I always overlook him. Still 21. Needs to steal more bases, though.

Actually it’s interesting to notice he has a higher OPS than Jake Marisnick, who gets a lot of love from the scouting community. Marisnick was #3 in the BJ’s system at the beginning of the year according to BA. Collier is only six months older.
Pulling a .800+ OPS in FSL is seriously no joke. I don’t expect HRs from him, but his doubles are pretty solid (remember, he’s short 50 games). For the second half, he just needs to keep the bat control (K/BB rates), keep shooting gaps with doubles/triples, and mainly needs to run more. SB are way down from last year, even with the missed games.
Nice to see Franco turn things around, also I liked what I saw from Ludy in the NCAA so i am interested to see how it goes for him as he seems have some power.
I was just looking at Franco’s splits and one of them JUMPS off the page. In night games he hits .198/.257/.302 and that’s the bulk of the games he’s played (68). In day games he’s .389/.418/.611 (18 games). Can someone please get him some carrots?
Ya I mentioned that last week…he continued with the trend this week as they played during the day on wednesday and he had a monster game. I definitely think it is beyond a coincidence at this point and the org should look into it.
Pull his career splits in day vs. night and you might have an argument (if it holds true). But I don’t think it does, in which case you’re just looking for something unnecessarily complicated.
As Ludy and Lino play on the same team, it is interesting to note the contrast between a seasoned college player and a youngster who is learning everything. Ludy’s problem ast Williamsport was that he was not hitting. He can catch. He is now hitting, which he is supposed to do well at this level. Lino can’t hit a lick, but has a higher projection because of his physical characteristics. The thought is he’ll learn and when he does he will be wonderful. This is purely an informed projection of scouts who have seen this happen from this type of body and rudimentary skill set. Thank goodness Ludy is hitting which justifies his selection and experience. He needs to continue to hit. Lino on the other hand needs repititions for his hitting and for his catching skill. From having a poor catching corps, the Phillies have some good prospects and other who project well. They should be strong in catching for a few years. Unfortunately no one is ready for the majors. Valle needs two or three years, but can, like Ruiz, learn on the job if his defense is good. He still has a bit to go there. Rupp is OK, but why does he have to bottom out every mid-season before he goes on a tear. That is the fun of following the minors. Thanks for this site. It is golden.
I think the Phillies really need to make some trades. I don’t think they should trade Hamels. I love Victorino but if they trade him, I could live with it. I think they should try to trade some of the less valuable guys and just make more cap room so that they can sign Hamels and possibly Victorino. I think they should try to trade Wigginton, Fontenot, Polanco, and Pierre. Trading those four guys makes a lot of money, and opens up spots on the major league roster for
Dom Brown (replacing Juan Pierre)
Pete Orr (replacing Polanco)
Michael Martinez (replacing Fontenot)
Hector Luna (replacing Wigginton)
I understand that the Phillies probably can’t get any great prospects for these guys but it would open up more money to be able to sign players and I honestly don’t see any of these four guys on the team next year. If they decide to trade Victorino, I would just hold onto Juan Pierre because you can’t afford to trade both of them.
I am fine with the first one regardless of whether the team wishes to stay in the pennant hunt provided they can get something useful for Pierre. If not, his salary is low and he is useful to the team, so why trade him? The second suggestion does not make a lot of sense to me because, even next year, I think Polanco will be worth more than he is paid and they can expect very little return for him. The third suggestion does not work – Fontenot has zero trade value – he was just released, why would someone trade for him? The last one makes sense once the team gives up on this year. Otherwise, Wigginton is a useful bench player and pinch hitter. What other guy can come off the bench and provide decent contact skills and power? Wigginton is the only one as far as I can tell.
There really aren’t any prospects listed in your post. Brown has too many ABs in Philly. Please use another thread (General discussion) for this. We’re all very into this right now but we can’t let it consume us.
I honestly don’t remember the Phillies ever drafting as good of a group of young hitters as have been drafted this year and last year. You might have to go back to the late 60s/early 70s (Schmidt, Luzinski, Mike Anderson) to find a cluster of hitters this good. Now, whether it will translate at the higher levels is a good question. But it’s a very talented group.
That is true, but I’m basing this conclusion also the volume of players, not just the current quality. I don’t expect most of them to pan out, but even if 1/3 to 1/4 of them proceed as projected, we will have the biggest group of good hitters in the systems since the 70s (when I wasn’t even a Phillies fan [grew up in CT] and when a lot of poster were not even born yet – that’s a damned long time!).
Call it a semi-informed hunch, but I think we’ve got a potential superstar in Dylan Cozens and Walding might not be that far behind. I think Dylan’s little run in with the coach dropped his stock a round or so. He’s got future offensive beast written all over him.
Fair enough, and I would agree that it is fun to have a lot of guys who at least appear to be able to hit.
I am as excited about Cozens as the next guy, but at the risk of having calumny heaped upon me, I would like to point out that he has a .500 BABIP and 27% K% in 67 PAs. I guess my point is that we really don’t know much about him yet except that he is huge, athletic, and has power.
And he seems to have a good eye. The walks have drawn my attention as much or more than anything else because we know he is big and can probably hit the ball a long way.
How is calling Dylan Cozens a potential superstar throwing Larry Greene under the bus? His name wasn’t even mentioned in this threat. If anything, my indirect reference to this current crop of hitters drafted this year and last indirectly praised Greene as he is part of that group.
I think he has shown good contact rates and an impressive eye. I think we’ll know more once he starts hitting for some power. I like what I see so far.
Solid find. I like “Graduations and trades have thinned this system out, but there are still a lot of things to like. Several of the Grade C guys are players from the 2011 draft who have higher potential but need to play, so this list could look much stronger next year once we see how they pan out. I’m not convinced that any of the toolsy outfielders are going to amount to much, and they need to start hitting or the new additions will pass them.”
TomB, you must have missed this comment at the end: “Several pre-season Grade C types have boosted their stock, such as Cloyd, Cesar Hernandez, Darin Ruf, Leandro Castro, Cody Asche, the resurrected Zach Collier, Adam Morgan, and Tyler Knigge. It is interesting that several of their top pitching prospects have similar statistical profiles.”
Those are guys he thinks have boosted their stock this year. I was noting that he did not include Altherr, Dugan or Rupp in that group of guys who have boosted their stock this year.
Didn’t miss it … I just assumed that the folks you mentioned were not given C grades … I took the entire article to only be related to players discussed in teh preseason. I would not have expected those guys to get much publicity in the preseason.
In his original article from October (below) he mentions Altherr and Dugan. I think it is interesting that Altherr, Dugan, and Rupp have not raised their stock this year in his eyes.
Am I missing something on Cesar Hernandez or is Mr. Sickels. The guy is on pace for 30+ doubles, 15+ triples, .300 ave. and + defense as a 22 yr. old in double A.
there is alot missing of that report…i would give his assessment of system C-. Just too many players with good upside not on that list…and how is Glavis that far down?
Holy crap. It’s his pre-season list. He hasn’t reranked ANYONE. He’s just writing up blurbs about his pre-season ranking. This is explained like…5 times.
Oops I missed something. Anyway thought his grading was tough on some. Since he didn’t give any A s, I will give Cesar Hernandez and Darin Ruf both an A.
The phantom Laynce Nix on a rehab assignment. Has anyone heard a peep about this guy or his injury since May? I remember the Phillies didn’t seem sure if he’d have to go on the DL at all, and now its 2 months later, and he’s just now getting into a minor league game.
Maybe the Phillies are keeping him down there until a trade is made with Victorino, and will place him on the big league roster? Dunno. Maybe he is on a schedule too. Like 5 GCL games then activated.
I don’t think it would be wise for them to immediately call Dom up following a Victorino trade especially after a stint on the DL. I think that adds a lot of pressure on him to step in and produce instantly on Vic’s level. Pridie is an adequate stop-gap…if Dom is still raking in september then give him a call up to get some AB’s before handing him the keys to CF in 2013.
September? Nooooooo dominic’s had enough time in the minors, I agree in easing back from this injury, but september? no way. The phillies clearly feel like he’s a determent to their winning ways (which is complete $hit right now), mide as well work the bugs out on the job or he’s NEVER gonna star in philly.
I think they should give him a week to 10 days in LHV. If he’s looking okay, he should go to Philly and stay there for good and play like 3/4 of the time. He’s so much better than their other left fielders right now its ridiculous. If he’s healthy, his time has come. John Mayberry barfed all over his golden opportunity.
Agree catch, Mayberry screwed the pooch and no one else on the roster is a viable long term solution. One way or another he needs to start. Why do you say 3/4th of the time? Kids had injury time off quite a bit this year, should be plenty rested to go 100% of the remaining games.
Casimiro is pitching today in the GCL. At 6’8″ he’s got to be a lot of elbows and knees coming at you.
Herlis Rodriguez is batting 3rd. i think this relates more to the fact that he’s been splitting with Tocci most days. They like Tocci in that 3 hole and he’ll probably play the last 4 or 5 innings. Brown is DH’ing and not in the field so he’s probably not ready to go back to AAA yet.
2 more k’s as well. Strikeout rate a big of an alarm as his production is a positive. Just not enough detail to know … Can’t wait for the scouts takes on him
Watching Halladay’s rehab start was interesting. It really gives you an idea how far away from the majors those guys are. I mean, Halladay looked downright awful compared to his usual self, but he still totally dominated the competition.
FWIW, just watching on TV, Rupp looked good behind the plate, and probably saved a wild pitch on a curveball way outside. Wish they would have just televised the whole game, or at least Clearwater’s half of the innings while they were talking about Doc. They already had the camera down there, is that too much to ask?
It seems like they televise the AAA games more than they have in the past. Unfortunately, that’s probably the most boring team to watch because it’s usually got the least amount of prospects. And the few that are there have been hurt so much. I wish they’d try out some R-Phils games on tv. You’re probably right about the ratings, or at least I’d hope so.
I was following the box score and noticed that they had him down for 3 IPs and 4Ks then changed it to 1 IP with 2 Ks. I think they gave him credit for Claypool’s innings before catching the mistake.
Maybe its just my memory but I don’t recall the Phillies having their minor leaguers doing rehab stints with lower level teams in the past nearly as often as they seem to be doing this year. Am I seeing a new trend or just not remembering previous seasons?
I think it is just more institutionalized now to send people down to Clearwater for rehab programs longer than a week or two. Probably a trend that is here to stay though it would make more sense to use AA or AAA if we really value game conditions.
Of course Dom Brown could set the GCL doubles record in a couple more games, so maybe it is that.
I’m sorry if someone has posted this somewhere else on the site, but has anyone heard anything on the unsigned players? I’m assuming Rash is not happening, I was just curious about Starwalt, Hill, Cody, Van Hoosier, etc. etc.
There are only so many spots that you can even find room/playing time for in the minor leagues, and the expectation is that your going to get 24-30 or so guys per year from the US draft. With 40 rounds, teams (every team) will take a bunch of guys late that have very very little chance of signing, in the hopes that maybe something changes in their mind. I have no issue if they fail to sign any of the 3 guys above (or Van Hooser or Miller Jr), but hope (and expect) 1-2 of the other guys to get signed.
‘and the expectation is that your going to get 24-30 or so guys per year from the US draft.’….you mean when there were 50 rounds prior to this year or the new limited round totals?
yeah lenny. homerun by nix started it, I believe, and pitching held on, morgan really interestes me. more strikeouts than innings pitched and less hits, love those kind of stats, but imo too many walks,That being said still hope they move him to reading before year is out, would like to see him in double a.
Time to get Dom back to AAA.

Dom Brown turns 25 in seven weeks or so, nows the time. But, I guess, to Philly FO, 24.8 is right on time.

I would keep him there for little while…let him gain ton of confidence. He has game changing ability and its just matter of getting his mind straight.

Cozens showing off the wheels. 6/6 in steals. Dare I say 40-40 guy? LOL.

Ho hum just another early afternoon 2-2 day for Cozens…. he is stealing all of Zach Green’s BABIP (3 line outs in two days)

I don’t see why they just dont televise the minors as a regular feature. I’m sure it would get more ratings than whatever TCN usually carries.

Even taped delay later in the night would be better then nothing.

DeFratus got in the GCL game today with 3 IP and 4 Ks. Hopefully he has no pain in the elbow and can get back to AAA.

the box score has him down for 1 perfect inning w 2 k’s

I’m assuming Rash is not happening, I was just curious about Starwalt, Hill, Cody, Van Hoosier, etc. etc.

Looks like no signings. Brookover says team signed 24 guys as of the deadline, which is what we already knew.
