Box Score Recap 7-13-2012

Adam Morgan goes over 100k for the season.  Leads his league.  Leads all Phils minor leaguers.  FYI – Clearwater guys are 1-2-3-5 in Ks in the FSL, with Biddle, Wright, Colvin after Morgan.

  1. Anybody know what happened to Gillies? Seems to have disappeared (sorry if I missed this previously).

    1. Reading manager said he isn’t able to go full 9 innings in the field yet. Dunno why they wouldn’t just DH him…

  2. You know Dom Brown’s on fire when he goes 2-5 with two doubles … and his OPS goes DOWN.

Asche with a triple and a HR in his last two days. LG Jr., Walding, Cozens, Pullin and Z. Green just keep on hitting …

    1. +1 on that. Although I get the feeling that we’ll be seeing an offseason position switch for Roman Quinn – 14 errors on the year now. I remember that many scouts felt he wasn’t going to stick at short anyway and that CF might be his home. I’d be okay with that

      1. Way too early for that. He was interviewed and said he never played SS before, even though I thought they said he had when he was drafted. Walding is also playing a new position. They’ll both improve over time and I don’t expect either to be moved position ally, at least for another year.

        1. That’s interesting – I thought he was a shortstop too. When I checked back on the 2011 Draft writeups – he was announced as an outfielder/shortsop, and the scouting reports said stuff along the lines of “has the athleticism to handle middle infield.” Other reports mentioned him as a possible 2B but will likely stick as CF.

So it is very likely that he never did play SS before. I retract my initial statement, although I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him as a CF in Lakewood next year, especially since there are no obvious (to me, at least) candidates for that position in Lakewood other than Pointer.

          1. If they stuck with Hewitt at 3B for two years, they’ll do it with anybody.

I’d be interested to know if Quinn’s errors can be partially attributed to the old “he’s so fast he gets to balls others don’t” justification. Have we seen many first-hand accounts of his defense?

            1. Mitch Rupert said one of his errors was a low throw that a better 1b should get, and the other two should have been scored hits.

            2. I’ve seen at least 4 or five of his errors this year that could have been saved by better defensive plays at first base. He made a nice play deep in the hole last night and got rid of the ball quickly, it was high and wide and Cameron Perkins tried to sweep a tag as he caught the ball and missed it. I see the official scorer has changed one of the errors to a hit since last night. I think the other error came on a rocket one hopper where he got screened by the umpire and didn’t field it cleanly. Yes, the error numbers are high, but I haven’t seen anything from him to lead me to believe he’ll be moved from shortstop. When I watched Hewitt here four years ago you knew he was destined for the outfield at some point. Didn’t have soft hands and a strong but erratic arm. I see none of that with Roman. He’s still learning the position and there’s going to be rough nights.

But when you talk about Williamsport defensively, think about this: With last nights starting lineup, you had 7 guys in the field learning new positions. Walding, Tyler Greene and Chace Numata were all high school shortstops. Cam Perkins was a college third baseman. Larry Greene was a high school infielder who has started to look very good in left. And Brian Pointer is a corner outfielder who is playing center because of a need and he’s done it pretty well.

  3. Is it me or does Tocci never play a full game- anyone know why he always seesm to enter the game late or leave early- past his bedtime?? (kidding- I know they play all there games during the day- maybe it’s nap time)

    1. They’re just trying to get lots of guys playing time, sort of like spring training. It’s a huge roster.

    2. You got to remember, the kid is only 16 (17 next month). I’m actually thrilled that he’s had a few dozen ABs already and he’s handled himself well, albeit on a small sample.

All in all, I can’t recall a time in the past 10 yrs when the Phils had so many promising prospects on their short-season squads. The new CBA certainly has impacted the short-seasoned rosters, but still, a good deal of interesting names to track the rest of the year

  4. Sure are lots of bats hitting right now. I can’t remember the last time I said that. Knigge settling in nicely in AA. Cozens, Green, and Pullin look very good while L Greene batting 4th was nice also. Asche definitely starting to do better. I’m still waiting for all first basemen to get bumped up a level. It will come but it’s not a rush I guess but Carmona, Seritella, Duffy, Murphy, and could all go up. More interesting will be to see if any CWater starters go up and whether Pettibone goes up. Actually, lots to be encouraged about dwn n the farm after two productive drafts plus I expect a few small trades coming to bring a few more B prospects.

      1. I’m hoping that Hamels gets resigned in the next week. I’m not sure they get any A prospects for Victorino, Polanco, Pierre, Blanton, or Wig if they trade these guys. I don’t see them trading Pence for anyone other than Upton but I could be wrong if they could get a top prospect who could start next year.

        1. I’m hoping Hamels stays, too. But I think Vic can most likely bring back aa top 150 prospect, and I also think Pence will get traded, but maybe not. Based on what we got for Thome, I’m hopeful for any other trades we make this year.

          1. why do i keep hearing rumors that we could acquire drew stubbs for vic??? A possible 20/20 guy seems a bit too much for shane but i wouldn’t mind

            1. Read in a Reds blog the other day, in an article about why they shouldn’t get Juan Pierre, that the move they want to make is to remove Stubbs from starting line-up, and the writer claimed Pierre would not be a very good CenterFielder. (Link off of MLBTR)

  5. Colvin being top five in the FSL in strikeouts shocks me considering his early struggles and his time in the bullpen. Good for him … I hope he continues to rebound.

It is just now dawning on me how good a year the Clearwater staff is having as a whole — particularly Morgan, Biddle and Wright. Obviously Biddle is a serious prospect, but I’m now wondering what kind of an impact these other guys might have on the big club in two or three years. Thoughts?

    1. Colvin may be 5th in strikeouts, but he is also tied for 4th in walks. Garner is 2nd in the FSL in walks. Wright is tied with Colvin.

      1. “Pitcher’s league” or park usually means the climate and park/s are conducive to keeping hard hit balls from turning into home runs. There’s no (legal) park factors that can help a pitcher induce strikeouts.

      2. Keep in mind that Colvin is in his 2nd full year in Clearwater…he should be destroying the competition, not just surviving.

  6. Keivi Rojas had 3 more K’s in 1.2 IP today for the GCL phils. In case anyone was keeping track that’s 21 K’s , 1 BB and 11 hits in 15.1 IP. Those are pretty obscene numbers. He’s 19. What kind of stuff does he have and should we start watching out for this guy.

    Like

    1. He’s interesting because most of his outings are multi-innings, and he’s 3rd on the team in IP (a good indicator of who are the better prospects). However, he’d need to move up to WPT and at some point move into the rotation before he’s really a true prospect.

    2. Pedestrian numbers in the free-swinging VSL last year including 26 walks in 62 innings. Perhaps improved mechanics or a flaw correction of sorts. Still, someone to keep an eye on in the 2nd half considering his performance to date. Nice catch Chris

    3. There is the thing , common in alot of Latin American pitchers, lack of ideal size. Let him move on a little further.

Guys with good size , looked at the other day, Last season’s draftee, Yacksel Rios, has really reduced the walk #’s in an absolute sense and also in relation to Strikeouts. Has been hit more than desirable though, Also, Ranfi Casamiro 6’8 has given up fewer walks than one might expect. Also been hit somewhat. I look for these guys to move along to a better status at some point. Instructional League participants, as was Keivi Rojas.

  7. Douglas Parrada no-hitter today in the VSL….would have been a perfecto except for an error…..14 Ks…..problem is he turned 19 in Feb, really big LH who only piched something like 6 innings last year for the Phils in VSL……when it comes to the VSL this year you cannot take any conclusions since their are only 3 other teams there….gotta believe he will be in the states pretty soon though.

    1. Would love to see him take to the outfield. Even if he could just play it at a Pat Burrell level, he could be our Bryan Lahair. At the least would make him a solid bench option.

      1. At least one “American league scout” interviewed by Bob Brookover in May, seemed to like Ruf as a potentail bench player. “I think he’s got a chance,” the scout said. “I think he’s going to have to find the right opportunity with the right club. He has a short swing and a good knowledge of the strike zone. I saw some better pitching get him out, but I definitely see him competing well in triple-A and getting a shot as an extra guy in the big leagues.”
