So Dylan Cozens has opened some eyes early on….with Larry Greene looking good as well. Other thoughts:
–Cameron Rupp has been much more consistent as of late and if he can hit .255-.265 with power and defense, the Phils will have something.
–Chris Serritella should be in Lakewood soon.
–Kelly Dugan has been hot ever since returning from his ankle injury and his average is now approaching .280 with some pop.
–The transition to new levels for 3B Harold Martinez and Cody Asche continues to be a slow one, but its still early.
–Adam Morgan is putting up numbers worthy of a move up to Reading, while Brody Colvin has pulled himself together over the last several starts.
–In the department of prospects named “Tyler”, both Cloyd and Knigge continue their dominance.

When did we change the spelling of Cozens to Couzens?

We should just petition him to change it to Cousins.

gberg – do you enjoy being a d*ck or is it accidental? People make mistakes, I’m sure you’ve made a few. If WIP is on commercial and the philly.com site is down for maintenance, I understand your presence here. Otherwise, go throw jabs at people in those places and save the more intellectual baseball discussion for this site.

Now that somebody else has raised the issue of spellings. I have noticed that someone with the name I have always considered to be “Gabriel” is always rendered on here as “Gabrial”. Some sort of religious thing?
And as far as this article goes.
Mr. Martinez-
I have it as Manaure. That’s important.

After 5 struggling years, this very well may be Anthony Hewitt’s last year in the Phillie org.

I don’t know. I’m starting to come around on him. He improves EVERY YEAR. It’s just minor. Maybe he’s one of those specs that doesn’t finally break out till 26/27. They do exist. I wouldn’t protect him on the 40-man or anything. But, I would definitely keep him around to see if he continues improving.

I agree, I don’t see any harm in having him play in Reading next year unless he is blocking someone more valuable, which I don’t think will be the case at this point.

I just do not understand how an OF at single A has 13 errors a little more than halfway through the season.

Although there is some improvement in Hewitt, he’s getting close to falling back into a big hole. Last year he broke a string of years where he had more Ks than total bases. This year he was improving on last year but now I see he has 83 Ks and 93 TBs. He has 16 Ks and 8 TBs in his last 10 games. With that trend, he’ll be back in the big hole again. I’d like to see him finish the year with 15 HRs, cut the Ks a little (or a lot), take a BB once in blue moon and improve his defense. I’m not asking for the world, am I?

IMO, think he should have Lasik surgery…..get to 20-15 vision. Some times its all about above the shoulders, including the eyes.

This has probably been asked a lot by now but does anyone know what is up with Larry’s power? Has anyone seen him?

Mitch Rupert had a good quote about this. Basically says the power is there. Just takes time.

Serritella. Geez.

Too early to know. Lets wait until we get more data to see if he makes contact, walks and hits for power. He’s limited to 1st base, so the bar is very high.

I don’t know but was watching him over the weekend and looks like he’s got a nice swing. It also looked like the opposing pitchers were doing their best to stay away from him after he crushed one out to RF.

His ceiling is playing 1st base for the big club. Sure, it is early to make intelligent assessments…but not too early to dream on.
We DO know that there is power in his bat but also an OBA guy whose BA could approach the .300 mark. Should he carry all that with him up through Lkwd and maybe Clwtr, we’d be happy to see him as a replacement for Howard with a higher BA.
Like most power hitters he’ll strike out plenty but the power would justify that.

In the 20 games since the SAL’s All-Star Break, Franco is hitting .342/.368/.481. He really seems to be putting something together.

Joe Jordan on Cameron Rupp: What!
Rupp, meanwhile, has emerged as the team’s top catching prospect, Jordan said. Sebastian Valle got all the headlines after an outstanding year in Clearwater last season. This year, with Valle struggling at Reading and Rupp’s vastly improved defense, big Cameron (and we mean 6-1, 240 big) is getting a look. “Although his offensives numbers aren’t great as far as batting average (.253), he’s hit some home runs (eight) and he’s been as good a catcher as we’ve had in our system this year,” Jordan said. “As good as he was defensively last year, he’s even better this season. You break it down defensively, he’s been our best catcher in the minor leagues this year.”

That surprised me as well … also interesting that he made a point of saying Collier would play in the bigs one day.

Joe Jordan, is the Phillies’ newest member of minor leaue development, and I am trying to get a read on him, but right now I am scratching my head on things he says. He may very well be the polar opposite of Chuck LaMar. Were as LaMar was upfront and sometimes publicly too critical of a prospect, Jordan may go the extreme opposite way, lauding and applauding every new prospect every week. Sometimes like to hear more from Scott Proefrock or Steve N.

Well, you have to take all these things with a grain of salt. When I read one of these overarching articles about all of the big prospects in the system, if I get two or three good little nuggets, I view that to be useful. The important takeaways for me are that: (a) Trevor May has improved his velocity and his change-up is good – he will work everything else out in time, which is probably the case; (b) Cameron Rupp is an outstanding defender and now that he is hitting, he is a major league prospect, albeit most likely as a back-up; and (c) what we are seeing statistically from Collier is consistent with what people are seeing on the field. A little disappointed not to hear any comments about Brown, Gillies, Asche, Bonilla or Pettibone or any of the first year or Williamsport players other than Greene. Cozens has to be drawing attention at this point. When you are as big as an NFL middle linebacker and all you do is draw walks and hit doubles, people pay attention.

Its all a joke at philly.com when talking minor leagues, yesterday the lead prospect story was how Valle was the catcher of the future and a future major league all-star, today he is not even the best catcher in our sub par system….
