Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

An abbreviated Lehigh Valley report as they head into the all star break…

Lehigh Valley heads into the all star break at 52-39, and in first place of the Northern Division of the International League, 1.5 games in front of second place Pawtucket.  Over the last 10 games, Lehigh Valley is 6-4 and pick things up after the break on Thursday where they begin an 8 game road trip in Norfolk, followed by a stop in Durham.  Having been completely decimated by a combination of injuries and call ups, the ‘Pigs position atop the division is a true testament to their Manager Ryne Sandberg, and his coaching staffs insistence on playing the game the right way.

Stats: Kevin Frandsen leads the league in AB’s (338); hits (99), and doubles (29); Cody Overbeck is 5th in doubles (22); Kyle Hudson is 7th in SB’s (17); Tyler CLoyd is 3rd in wins(8),3rd in WHIP (0.95); and leads the league in ERA (2.01): Pat Misch is 2nd in losses (10), tied for the lead in starts (18) and is 3rd in HR allowed (14); Scott Elarton has the 6th worst ERA (5.10) and 7th worst WHIP (1.56); Phillipe Aumont is 9th in saves (10); Tom Cochran has allowed the 10th most walks (39).

Probables: Thur: Elarton; Fri: Misch; Saturday: Rosenberg

Notes: Tyler Cloyd has gone at least 6 innings in 17 of his 18 starts (5.2IP in the other). He will be the starting pitcher in the All Star game Wednesday for the IL.

–Lehigh Valley already has 9 walk off victories, 2 more than in any previous year.

–BJ Rosenberg appears to have been moved out of the bullpen and into the rotation.  With Matt Wright coming off the DL, stay tuned to see if this is a permanent move.

–Scott Elarton is now 0-5 with a 7.64ERA in his last 9 starts. His days may be numbered in Lehigh Valley.

–Tyson Brummett has not allowed an earned run in his last 13.2IP.

–Domonic Brown has been sent down to the Carpenter Complex in CLearwater to continue his rehab on his injured knee.

Transactions: Last Tuesday: INF Jeremy Barnes was promoted from Clearwater and C Bob Stumpo was promoted from Lakewood.  Last Wednesday, Bob Stumpo was sent down to Reading.  Last Friday, 1B/3B Hector Luna was optioned to Lehigh Valley from Philadelphia.  Last Saturday, INF Jeremy Barnes was sent to Clearwater.  Last Sunday, P Matt Wright was activated from the DL.

  1. Is this an ode to Ryne Sandberg?? LOL It may be time for a change.

Anyone know the deal with Frandsen? I know he had that suspension last year but he puts up nice numbers. Defense?

    1. Frandsen has been around the block a few times. He played in the big leagues in parts of 4 years with his last big league action coming in 2010. He’s a solid AAAA type player who could fill in for brief periods at the big league level. He can play every infield position and has played them all in LHV. His defensive numbers look fine but I saw him in ST and he was bad, or should I say horrendous. Every ball hit to him was an adventure with many passing right through him. This year he has 7 E’s in 87 games in the infield. He’s 30 years old and his glory days are behind him but he’s a good guy to have hanging around AAA. There are probably 50 guys who are just like him sitting in that AAAA status so he’s not indispensable.

  2. Glad to see that Sandberg gets well deserved credit for his managing an AAA team, bereft of young talent…aside from a few masquerading as relievers. Sandberg, to me, is the obvious person to take over the reins in ’13 instead of Cholly. Charlie’s main worth was in letting his players make the final push to excellent competitors.

We DO know that Cholly’s preferences focus on veteran players, now. He’d be starting all over again with prospects hopefully obtained via trades to soon be made. We also should be able to agree that Cholly’s strong points do NOT include creative game strategy.

Whereas, Sandberg’s recent resume is chock full of patience with the over-the-hill gang at LV for last and this winning season, a patience unlikely to be exhibited by Cholly. It IS time to move on.

Cholly can stay on as an “adviser” comforted by his accumulated manager’s salaries, but Sandberg needs to be appointed manager. Sandberg IMO knew that he would be the likeliest manager WHEN Cholly moved on. The time is NOW (at season’s end?) and get Sandberg on board…soon before some other team sees what he has.

      1. Oh really. maybe just the whole outfield, relief, and a real backup catcher, and say third base, fifth starter that can pitch. The present direction is down if you haven’t noticed.
Sandberg gets teams to overachieve and this coaching staff is mostly too old to get out on the field every day.

          1. I would add 3B and RF to that list. Trading Pence is a pipe dream. Besides, who would be the new whipping boy. I’m not a fan of Polanco at 3B, but looking at the other options he is likely the best. Unless they get Olt from Texas in a trade of Hamels.

  3. So what do people think of Tyler Cloyd?. Do you think his stuff will get major league hitters out? Going by his numbers it would appear that he deserves a call-up to the big club. I was disappointed that the team didn’t give him a look see with a spot start in late June in the game against the Pirates when they opted instead to go with Valdes and use the bullpen. Is it premature to think of a Cloyd debut in the coming weeks?

    1. I’ve posted the wrong info about Cloyd before, but I’ll try again to not make a fool of myself. He pitches in the upper 80s but apparently has “pitchability”. I personally think that is not a recipe for success in the majors, but hey you never know. He reminds me of Joe Roa from 2002.

      1. Brian Gordon is the name that scares me. Like Cloyd, he dominated at LHV without “stuff” and couldn’t hang in the big leagues.

  4. Trade Cloyd in a package for Chase Headley. He will be the best available 3B via trade or free agency

  5. Why was Rosenberg moved back into the rotation? Are they actually considering him for a starting role or just trying to get him more work?
