Around the System, Bullpen, Lower Half

A look at the bullpen in the lower half of the system. Little analysis because it remains too early for opinions on the Williamsport and GCL groups.

Lakewood

Blake Mascarello,23, Signed as a free agent in 2012; 6 games between GCL and Lakewood; 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA; 8.2IP 12H 2BB 6K; .333 opp. avg. Played big time college baseball this year at Purdue, so should be impressing at this level.

Luis Paulino, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2007; 18 games; 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA; 2 saves; 36.1IP 28H 14BB 30K; 2 HR allowed; 0.70 GO/AO; .212 opp. avg., .246 vs. LH, .187 vs. RH, .235 with RISP. Paulino has pitched well this year and should be a candidate to spend the final six weeks of the season in Clearwater.

Moises Rivas, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2009; 4 games between GCL/Lakewood/CW and is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA.

Yari Sosa, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2009; 10 games (2 starts); 0-1 with a 4.84 ERA; 1 save; 22.1IP 25H 10BB 8K; 1 HR allowed; 0.66 GO/AO; .287 opp. avg., 1.56 WHIP; 4.1BB/3.3K per nine. Very pedestrian line thus far.

Williamsport

James Birmingham, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2011; 12 games between Lakewood and Williamsport; 0-2 with a 10.45 ERA; 10.1IP 11H 16BB 9K; 0.77 GO/AO; .256 opp. avg., After a very good 2011, Birmingham can not find the plate.

Geoff Broussard, 21, Phils 23rd round pick in 2012; 6 games between Lakewood and Williamsport; 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA and 1 save; 13.2IP 12H 5BB 17K; 1.09 GO/AO; .231 opp. avg. Looking good early on.

Zach Cooper, 22;Phils 15th round pick in 2012;  1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 5 games.

Luis GOnzalez, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 4 games (1 start); 0-0 with a 3.63 ERA.

Nicholas Hanson, 20, Phils 16th round pick in 2012;  6 games, 1-1 with a 6.39 ERA; 1BB/15K.

Steven Inch, 21, Phils 6th round pick in 2009; 6 games; 0-1 with a 5.73ERA;

Andre Kinder, 23, Phils 42nd round pick in 2011;  10 games between GCL/Williamsport/CW; 1-0 with a 3.93 ERA; 18.1IP 12H 12BB 18K; 0.95 GO/AO; .182 opp. avg. Has pitched well.

Matt Sisto, 22; Phils 20th round pick in 2012; 7 games; 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA;

Jeb Stefan, 22; Phils 22nd round pick in 2012; 7 games; 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 2 saves.

GCL

Richard Bielski, 17, Phils 14th round pick in 2012; 3 games, 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA.

  1. You really can’t determine much from the short-season relievers at this point, there just hasn’t been enough innings. Giles is by far the best of the bunch at Lakewood, but that clearly isn’t saying much.

    1. You are correct. That isn’t saying much. Kenny Giles isn’t having a good year, but he isn’t noticed because his ERA is still under 4. 40 walks and 7 hit batters in 56 innings isn’t good.

      1. Many more people with a mid-to-high 90s fastball have learned control, than those with high 80s fastball and good control learned how to throw it 6-8mph faster. Essentially, you can’t teach arm strength.

    1. He was a 6th rounder. He has been injured for the better part of 2+ years… can’t really predict injuries.

  2. I got an extended look at Luis Gonzalez last week. A lefty with swing and miss stuff. I think the Phils have a fringe prospect. He has a nice slider, but his command needs work. Got into trouble as he went deeper into his outing. I think he’s worth keeping an eye on.

  3. I like Mascarello. He throws a heavy ball and gets ground ball after ground ball. Great stuff for CBP.

  4. Luis Paulino is a former infielder so he’s still in the conversion stage. I’ve been happily surprised by him. Bielski is the youngest pitcher the Phils have playing. Of the guys playing state-side, only Tocci is younger. What did he sign for?

    1. I’m very excited about Bielski. He signed for $100k this year. Apparently he can get it up to 93 and at least has some secondary pitches. He was a 14th round pick this year and is a full year younger than Gueller and 1 yr 2 months younger than Watson. A lot can happen between 17 and 18 years old.

  5. Control is the main issue for Giles. He has great stuff and even gets the ball up over 100 miles an hour. Hopefully he can get the command and we will see him in the big leagues one day.

    1. My impression is that his “stuff” still mainly consists of throwing really hard. He said a few months ago that he doesn’t really have a breaking pitch (though some posters here say they have seen him throw one). Either way, he has a lot of development to do but can throw gas.

  6. In fairness to Austin Brough, I could imagine a much worse line than that.

    I also find it amusing that there are people on this site who say we should sign every single draft pick and the Phillies are cheap when they don’t, and then turn around and say the front office members are idiots for signing somebody like Inch who hasn’t succeeded wildly.
