Reading Game Report

Other Stuff

NYPhilsManiac has been kind enough to send in another game report from his recently attended Reading Phils game vs. New Hampshire.  Always insightful, so give it a read:

Hitting:
JIWAN JAMES: 1) K’d on high FB, 2) Tried to Bunt  but it hit the plate, 2-3, 3) ripped a 3B- went right over the 1B bag and he was  off to the races, 4) K’d looking
CESAR HERNANDEZ: 1) Chopper to SS that was ruled a  hit (very charitable scoring), 2) weak GB 3-1, 3) Another ground out 3-1, 4) K’d  swinging
DARIN RUF: 1) Hotshot- robbed by SS, 6-3, 2) Another Hotshot- great pick by SS, 6-3, 3) K’d swigning at off-speed pitch, 4) One more 6-3- not so hard hit this time
CODY ASCHE: 1) Ripped a Double off RF wall, moved  up on a deep fly ball, scored an a groundout, 2) Ground out 3-1, 3)  Called out on Strikes
LEANDRO CASTRO: 1) Deep Flyout to CF, 2) Ripped a  shot but was robbed by third baseman, 3) Pop up to 1B
SEBASTIAN VALLE: 1) Weak pop up in shallow LF  caught by SS, 2) Fouled off numerous pitches and WALKED!!!!!, 3) Weak Flyout to  RF
Overall, the team only collected 3 hits so not much  to report.  Ruf did hit the ball hard and it was fun to watch Jiwan leg out  the triple.
Pitching:
JORDAN WHATCOTT- A night to forget for sure.   He did top out at 94 on the Reading gun, but the Fisher Cats didn’t seemed to  have any problems with him.  Ironic that he was just named to the All-Star  team because he looked like anything but an all-star.
1) He should’ve been out of the first inning, but a  looper landed in left-center field that could’ve been caught by Hanzawa or  Castro- it ended up being a double.
2) In the 2nd inning, he gave up a double off the  RC wall, then a liner back to the box, he grabbed the carom and threw off  balance to 3B and the throw was wide so all were safe.  After a walk loaded  the bases, they had a shot at a DP but Ruf bobbled a ground ball and only got  the out at first. A line single to LF (by our old friend Brian Bocock) plated 2  more before 2 flyouts to LF ended the inning
3) In the 3rd, NH got a 2 run Homer to extend  the lead to 6-1.
4) In the 4th, after getting a K on an 80 mph  off-speed pitch, he gave up a double that just missed being a HR, then 2 batters  later, He gave up a HR.
Overall, a pretty dismal performance for  Whatcott.  He has not fared well since moving into the  rotation.
COLBY SHREVE:
Looked very good in hist first inning of work  throwing all ground balls for a 1-2-3 inning.  In his 2nd inning of work,  he gave up a line single, then after a FC groundout, he got a nice  6-4-3 DP to end the inning.  In the 7th inning (Colby’s 3rd), things  unraveled bit.  After a weak groundout to 1st, he gave a HR, then got  the 2nd out on a FB to LF.  After a walk, and a single, a GB was hit to SS  where Hanzawa made a diving play but then threw wildly from his knees to allow a  run to score.  Shreve began the 8th inning on the hill but was pulled after  a walk and a single- both runs ended up scoring.
Jay Johnson gave up 2 runs of his own as well as  allowing Shreve’s 2 runners to score. 
The ninth inning was interesting because back-up  catcher Stephen LeRud came in to pitch and unfortunately, had to leave the game  with what turned out to be an elbow injury.  Darin Ruf came on to record  the final out on one pitch.  The 2 non-pitchers recorded one of our best  innings.

    1. Yeah and followed it up by going to LV the next night and watching them fall behind 8-1 before making it respectable at the end. Got back to NY and watched the Phils lose two late vs NYM and the Bravos- tell me again why I still watch baseball… Was gonna do a LV report but realized there was no one who pitched/played to report on.
