Box Score Recap 7-6-2012

Manaure Martinez had himself a nice double-header mandated 7 inning CG – 1 run, 8ks.  Take a look at him, and you may think like me that he’s someone to keep an eye on.  In the other GCL game, Mitch Gueller made his debut.  2 scoreless with 2 ks.  Cool.

    1. Was that his professional debut? I know he’s been around, I don’t remember him ever actually appearing in a game

    1. Yes and drawing walks too. Now we need him to settle in and start driving the ball – I expect the power to really start showing itself next year.

By the way don’t be surprised if one of he next call ups to the bigs is Lisalverto Bonilla. I think he is that close to his opportunity. He might be up to the challenge too.

  1. Is anyone looking at the year leandro Castro is having? I think he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. With the amount of at bats he has he should be considered for a big league shot if victorino gets traded! What are your thoughts!

    1. Castro won’t survive at the MLB with his current BB rate but he’s only 23 and can certainly continue to develop. Still, there’s a good deal of mediocrity in his slash line particularly for a corner outfielder. I don’t think there’s any chance for him next year as I don’t see him being the type of player who could jump AAA. LV to start next year is my guess

        1. This is true and possible. However, guys with upsides of backups generally considered strong prospects.

        1. I think you need to do a little more research.

          1. Look up Victorino’s BB rate.
          2. Look up Castro’s K rate.
          3. Compare.

        2. I don’t meant to jump on you, but your post unintentionally says a lot about why Castro is not much of a prospect. Some people seem to mentally divide people into “good” and “bad” BB rates, and do not differentiate between “really bad,” “bad” and “mediocre.”

Victorino, in his major league career, has a BB rate of 7.8%, close to league average, and has been around 8.5%, a little above league average, for the past 4 years. Castro, in his MINOR league career, has a BB rate of 4.2%, and only 2.4% over the past 2 years. (FWIW, Victorino’s minor league BB rate was 7.6%.)

Victorino is mediocre. Castro is either really bad (last 2 years) or “just” bad (career). (In terms of BB rate; Castro does have other strengths.) But a 2.4% BB rate isn’t really viable for a major leaguer.

You may bring up Starlin Castro. But his career rate is a low but but tolerable 4.8, and it was over 7% in the minors. And he is a SS. And if he maintains this year’s low rate, his career will take a downward path

          1. lol a rather graphic illustration of my excessive wordiness, compared to jmb, who beat me to the point by being more concise. 🙂

            Like

          2. And JMB does remind me of yet another reason why Victorino is a bad comp – Victorino also has a better K rate. Oh, and more power. And, if not more speed, more effective speed, as measured by SB%. And is a better fielder. Castro’s edge would be … umm, gee, not seeing any. Some people might say BA, but if Castro was in the majors – sorry, not buying even that.

    3. Castro isn’t a viable center fielder, he’s only played there sparingly in the minors. Beyond that, I agree that he’s a prospect. But he’s simply not ready.

  3. Castro is interesting because they seemed to balk at including him in the Pence trade. They gave up Santana much more willingly. It would be nice to see a career renaissance by Zach Collier.

    1. Not sure I remember hearing the club balked at including Castro. He was available and the Astros decided on Santana, is how I remember it happening. If that’s wrong, I’d be interested to see a news report that said otherwise so I can have the story straight.

      1. They didn’t balk on Castro. He had some injury and the Astros had to wait for him to come off the DL to make their decision (I believe this was how it happened). Regardless, while we hold Ed Wade to be an idiot, no GM would take Castro instead of Santana.

      1. I would gIve up 5 castro types for 1 santana. Santana has a remote chance of being an all star while castro has a remote chance of being a 4th outfielder

Could be true, but there is probably some ‘negotiation tactic’ in the report.

      1. I would like to know the guy’s scource. The Mizzou web sites don’t seem to have any idea about Rash’s intentions. Rash doesn’t seem to have pitched since June 6th, and he hasn’t “tweeted” in a few weeks.

        1. Kendall Rogers and Perfect Game are about as strong of a source as you are going to get. Its just a matter of finding out if it is serious, or a negotiating tactic, and we won’t that until the deadline.

        2. Rash pitched June 27th against Dallas Center-Grimes, according to the Dallas County News. That’s the latest I can find… but that paper is a weekly, and they’ve only provided results online through about July 2nd.

At least that is how you would say it in Spanish with the accent on the second syllable. I’m sure his parents like the name. It could be a name honoring his grandfather, as many people do in that part of the world. Unusual for us, but not so much for his family. Look at it from his way.
It doesn’t take much work to try to understand something regarding culture. Give it a try.

  5. Has anyone noticed the day game/night game split in Maikel Franco’s stats?

Day: 16 Games .375 BA with .992 OPS
    Night: 64 Games .195 BA with .563

This is a huge difference, something that kind of jumped out out me when I was browsing through the stats the other day. Any one have any kind of insight here? Could it be an eyesight thing? Like with Josh Hamilton but opposite?

I really have no idea, definitely think its something the org should like into especially with such a young prospect with so much upside.

    1. Interesting. Slot recommendation is 500k. 800k would be at the top of the 2nd round, about 30 slots ahead of him. The Phils can offer up to $693,100 without going over the penalty, and paying the tax. They can almost reach $1M before they hit the loss of a pick, so that isn’t a question.

However…today is is July 7, and the deadline isn’t until the 13th. There is plenty of room to posture, and talking to the newspapers before the deadline is up is one way to do it. If I had to guess, I still think he gets signed, but for more like 650K.

  8. I’m a little baffled about all that hostility toward the guy who posted the correct report about Rash? Bringing bad news is not the same thing as trolling. Matt Gelb just linked to the same story from the Des Moines Register. Here’s the link again: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20120707/SPORTS/120707005/Phillies-Adel-pitcher-can-t-reach-deal-Rash-will-head-to-Missouri?Sports

Seems like there was a pretty big difference of opinion between the two sides. I’m not sure if that $120,000 school tuition offer would have counted toward the bonus under the new rules? If not, we’re talking about $300K, which is a fairly decent amount. But who knows, maybe they’re posturing and hoping that the Phillies will come back with something more.

    1. James is on the tweeter saying 693 was the max; 800 might have cost them picks.

Not really a big deal for me; they’ll take the money and sign some other high school kid(s). Obviously they won’t be as highly regarded, but the team has done a good job of drafting talented, over-slot kids late in the past.

      1. The issue is that they potentially failed to budget for what it would take to sign one of their 2nd round picks.

Kinda wondered as well – why this info hit the papers a week before the deadline. Plenty of time to get this done & get Rash in the fold.. ( no pun intended)

  12. Amaro has gotta be fired. How does he not budget for one of their 2nd round picks? He is awful!!! From Matt Gelb…

According to a report in the Des Moines Register, the Phillies lost out on their second round pick, Alec Rash, over $180,000.
The report cites Rash’s father, Mike, as saying that the 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher couldn’t come to terms with the Phillies:
“Mike Rash said the family requested $800,000. He said the Phillies countered with an offer of $500,000 plus $120,000 for college.
“‘They stayed pretty consistent with their offer,’ Mike Rash said.”

    1. Not budgeted for the second-round pick? Have you paid attention at all to the Phillies’ signings and how many guys signed for under slot? Amaro and the FO saved nearly $200k to be able to throw at this kid on top of his slot value.

If you look at the 30 players who were drafted in the second round and have signed, 12 signed for under slot value, 7 signed at slot value, and 11 signed for over slot value. The average amount over slot value for those 11 was $306,236 … And if you take away Carson Kelly of the Cardinals who signed for more than $1 million over slot value, the average of the other 10 who signed for over slot was $234,290 over slot value.

The Cardinals are also the biggest violator of the slot budget system this year, having spent more than $300,000 over what they were allowed. And that is despite only giving slot money to 4 of their first 13 picks in the draft, with Kelly being the only one to get over slot money.

So, looking at those numbers, I’d say Ruben and the FO made a fair offer to Rash. Yeah, it sucks that it wasn’t good enough for him, but sometimes things just don’t work out.

  14. Went up to Staten Island tonight and watched the Crosscutters lose to the Yankees mainly because of too many walks followed by giving up big extra base hits. As for the offense, the most polished hitter, as expected due to being a college guy, was Serrintella. He really rocked his 1st inning HR and showed good plate discipline all night, even facing a lefty for a few ab’s. Even though he didn’t get a hit Walding looked good in his AB’s. Quinn batting left-handed popped up a bunt and K’ed; then hit a solid single up the middle batting right-handed. Both Greene’s did not look good at all, neither making any good contact at all.
