Hot or Not

Happy 4th and another week in the books.  Observations:

–The Lakewood lineup has taken it up a notch over the last couple weeks, most notably Aaron ALtherr who has put together several consecutive very good weeks.

–Leandro Castro is working towards a call up to Lehigh Valley to finish the season.  He is well above .300 on the season now, and after a miserable April, has reallu started swinging the bat well.

–The transition of Harold Martinez to High A has been less than smooth and he has seen limited playing time as of late.

–Very nice to see conseuctive very goos starts by Brody Colvin who may be coming out of his season long funk. Nice numbers by Josh Warner and Tyler CLoyd just keeps rolling along.

–Phillippe Aumont was simply nasty in his outings this week, while Joe Savery was just the opposite.

  1. As I said on the box score thread, I think Brody Colvin’s stabilization is the best news in the minors right now.

    1. It’s got to be difficult for a young player who went through a valley like he did to put it back together again. Yet that’s exactly what he appears to be doing. That shows he may have developed the thick skin and ability to deal with adversity that all big leaguers must possess. Combine that with his considerable talent and … look out.

      1. Now I’d really like to see Trevor May do the same thing at AA in the second half and finish strong.

  2. Maybe they send up Josh Warner soon because he’s absolutely dominating in Williamsport.

    1. It’s still a very small ss though. I’m getting excited about him but I don’t think it would be too conservative to leave him with the Crosscutters the rest of this year.

      1. Yeah, 25. The Phillies would make the call based on his stuff and how advanced he is more than his stats anyway, I think. He’s been very good but it doesn’t seem like he’s overwhelming hitters. I don’t think we’ve had a proper scouting report on him yet though.

        1. I know it’s tempting with a lot of guys, but the sample size is way too small, and there’s something to be said with building a player’s confidence.

          1. Also need someplace to put all of these guys everyone wants promoted 2-weeks into the short season. For every guy moved up, someone else has to be moved down, put on the DL, or released.

    2. Well I only say it because he was in Lakewood earlier. He just pitched what 4 very good games in a row. 1 or 2 more and why not send him back. They obviously liked him enough to have already given him a taste of Lakewood this year.

  3. Outside of Serritella, the college players the Phillies drafted this year have been mostly unimpressive.

    1. And any idea what Kevin Brady is up to? Assigned to WPT but hasn’t hit the mound yet…

      1. He was hurt when the Phillies drafted him, otherwise he would have been a top 5 round pick.

  5. Great to see minimart can’t hit at AAA either. Hopefully we never see him again in a phillies uniform

  6. Bonilla’s got to be careful: he keeps throwing scoreless appearances and they will never move him up

  7. I often caution against overreacting, but I actually think it makes sense, if–if!–Cozens keeps this up for a couple more weeks, to promote him and give him a little taste of The Penn League. Even if he struggles, he’ll gain some valuable experience and (perhaps more importantly in my view) the Phillies can cite his example to the next tough sign high schooler they draft, to give him an incentive to get to Clearwater quickly.

    1. Hmm. Seems I recall the same theory about Tyler Greene last year. He got a head start on Walding and Quinn, and he was a hero. Now all it seems that he accomplished, is that he may have cost himself about 350K, just to sit at the same level with the guys that held out for more money.

      1. So, I’m not sure where you’re getting your $350,000 estimate from, but if the promise of starting your career early entices you to leave that much money on the table, it seems like an argument for rewarding prospects who do so, doesn’t it? I can’t see how his getting some ABs in the GCL last year hurt his development, and the only people who should be worried about him singing for an insufficient amount of money are him and his parents.

  8. How would you guys rank the potential 3b prospects we could recieve in a trade? (Olt, Castellanos, etc) I would think besides upside, the ability to start in the bigs as soon as next year, or this year if Polanco is traded, would have the most value.

    1. Castellanos is more highly regarded than Olt, but both are top 50. Olt has shown more power, but is also 3 years older.

      1. From what I understand Castellanos is a “pure hitter” with potential to hit above .300 with at least moderate power (thinking 20-25 homers) and a doubles machine. Olt is said to have big secondary skills (power , getting on base, and defense) but many think he will never hit above .270 Both are said to have very good arms with olt being a better fielder. Olt is lower risk as of now though as he is older and Castellanos is only in high a i believe.

  9. Have been to quite a few Lakewood games this year and it is really nice to see them playing better ball
they lost last night to a poor team but that happens after traveling 500 miles over-night. Look for them to be much more competitive this half
