Does Ruf have any mobility or range to switch to another position eventually? Seems like he should try an outfield spot because of howard having 1b on lock for a few years.
As a general rule, if a player reaches the high minors as a first baseman, that’s a pretty good sign that the organization has reasonably concluded that the player can’t adequately play any other position.
I couldn’t disagree. Still, his 1st half left something to be desired so he was desperately in need of a hot streak. His walk rate has increased considerably this year including 9 walks in the past 6 games. Truly an odd number for a player not known for his plate discipline. Here’s hoping he can keep it going
I agree. Lakewood, as a whole, has awakened. Dugan is hitting .355 in his last 9 games, Duffy continues to mash at a .400 clip in his last 10, Altherr is hot, hot, hot and Franco caught the hitting bug at .389 in his last 9. If you want to throw Stassi in there too, I’d be fine with that. In the 5 games that he played the whole game, he was Howard’s caddie for a while there, he’s hitting .375 with 2 big HRs and 9 RBIs
Warner is showing why the team is so high on him. Cozens looks like someone to dream on… Colvin looked pretty good and Kleven was impressive. The biggest thing to me though is that our Lakewood offense, which we all have been so disappointed in, has come back. I questioned the ability of the coaches there with everyone doing so poorly but Joe Jordan said that he expected a bounce back from that group after much instruction time was given. Hudson, Franco, Altherr, Dugan and even Eldemire to some extent have all had a very strong stretch. Let’s hope they keep it up. Way to go Mickey on getting those guys going. It is time for our first baseman to all go up a level though.
Great post, I totally agree. I’m very high on Altherr, but have been for a couple years now. He’s finally starting to show some development in his plate discipline, noting a declining k-rate and increasing bb-rate. In 11 games since the break (SSS, I know, but trending in the right direction): .486/.596/.703, 2 HRs, 2 SB, 2 2B, 11 Ks vs. 9 BBs (7 multi-hit games over the past 10). The defensive ability has always been apparent, and now that he’s getting on base the speed tool is showing itself on offense. Josh Warner still needs to show me more before I get overly excited. He’s posting solid numbers in Williamsport, after an overly aggressive start at Lakewood, but I would like to see the k-rate sit consistently around 9 k/9. Great start last night, let’s see more of the same.
I think the biggest credit for the Lakewood turnaround has been Chris Duffy. He will probably end up being just an organizational bat with little MLB upside, but putting a .400 hitter in the middle of the Lakewood lineup helped the younger guys.
As somebody else said here awhile back, hitting is contagious, and that Lakewood lineup (pre Duffy) was dead in the water. Nobody was hitting.
I would say that the best bit of news in the minors right now is Brody Colvin’s stabilization. Here’s a guy who was not only held back, but sent to the bullpen for a while, and now he seems to have put things back together. I’m not counting any chickens, he has teased us before, but if he can resume his rise through the system that will be really good news. We’re going to need new arms in the big club’s rotation in a couple years, maybe sooner, that much is clear.
Morandini must have had a big talk with his team. Lots of runs in the second half and Altherr getting hits and walks. Hope it continues with them. Real high on Altherr and Franco and would like to see how Lino plays out for the rest of the season. Now they need to do something with their pitching. Warner keeps pitching like he is and he might get the call up.
He’s missed so much time, I think they would just like him to stay there and have some success. If he hits well the rest of the year, he will certainly have reclaimed his prospect status back. Also once Gillies comes back there aren’t many outfield at bats available at Reading unless they move Castro up, which s possible.
Definitely encouraging to see another good start from Colvin. I think the defining moment of his start was in the middle innings of the game when he had guys on second and third with two outs. He went to 3-2 on the Brevard hitter, hung in there, and threw him a nasty changeup which completely froze the guy at the plate, a veteran hitter who has been in the league for a couple years.
Earlier in the season in that same situation, Brody loses his poise and overthrows, either giving up a big hit or walking the guy and getting himself further into trouble. I think the kid is making some progress.
Great update, thanks. I think we all know he has the talent but he has to grow as a pitcher, it sounds like that progression is taking place. That could be very good news.
I think LeRud got hurt- his last pitch was much slower and the trainer came out before he was removed. He did not get ejected – started next batter. Ruf was very economical ..
one pitch, one out
Yes, but that’s not the post to which I was replying. I was replying to the anonymous suggestion that, in another two weeks Cozens could be sent to Clearwater, which is ridiculous.
I really disagree on Cozens. let him get some success at gcl. then he will go to fall ball in florida, and then if all goes well williamsport to start next year, would be more realistic to me,then moving him after two weeks now, He is a young kid and unless every, scout and team in baseball was wrong, he will need time he isnt a harper or trout type propsect.
There is zero reason for him to be promoted right now but I disagree with Williamsport next year….if he keeps this up, they double jump him to Lakewood to see how he handles it in an Age 19 season.
I agree with NEPP right now he is on track to go to Lakewood and i hope that is where he goes next year so he can play with Walding, Quinn, the Greenes, etc.
It sure looks like Harold Martinez’ quick signing was a good move for him. A 3rd round (?) draft choice, he got several hundreds of thousand dollars which he will need to start his own business or invest. It seems he was a waste of such an early choice…but I think the Phils were hoping to strike gold despite his poor college numbers.
Ruf pitched tonight? I’m guessing LeRud got tossed after the HBP?

Nice to see Ashe hit a double and Colvin have a nice game… a walk too many for my tastes, but he continues to go in the right direction.

He played like 1-2 games in LF earlier this year, and hasn’t touched it since. Not a good sign.

I believe the last 10 games Altherr has had, is the best 10 game stretch of the season for anyone in the system.

Altherr really just had a bad month (May)–he was fine (over .300) in April, hit almost .300 in June, and is hitting everything in July so far.
Nice to see Franco hitting a little bit lately, too.

Altherr is also killing lefties. Sounds like he’s learning to lay off the low/outside slider/curve from the RH pitchers.

If you are agreeing that Duffy should get credit for Lakewood offense coming on then leave him alone especially if he is a fringe prospect at best
