Some quick hits to get things going this weekend:

–Our old friend Matt Rizzotti was released yesterday by the Twins organization. Things change quickly in the world of minor league baseball.

—Darin Ruf hit his 13th HR last night, leading the Phils Minor League System.

–Reading OF Leandro Castro has been hot for 6 weeks now and is making a push for a callup to Lehigh Valley before years end.  While a free swinger, teams will make room for a free swinger with the tools that he has.

—Austin Hyatt finally had a decent start last night after about a dozen lackluster efforts.

—Anthony Hewitt made his 14th error of the season in the OF last night, a near unbelievable amount heading in July. He is on pace for 25 OF errors.

–CHris Duffy has reached base by either hit or walk in all 31 games he has played for Lakewood and currently has a 14 game hitting streak.

—Ervis Manzanillo has landed on the DL again for Lakewood with an elbow strain.

  2. Larry Greene jr, Michell Walding, Roman Quinn, Austin Wright and Adam Morgan. I think the 2011 draft is going to be better than the 2008 draft.

      2. Yeah. Forgot to mention Asche. Lakewood suffered a lot this year, because Asche, Wright and Morgan were good enough to skip that level, and go straight to Advanced A ball.

    2. Yeah, the 2011 draft is looking especially good. I think we will end up being happy with 2012 as well.

  4. Someone posted that Friend got moved up to AAA, but Reading roster still has him there. Anyone have a link or something to verify this?

    1. Nevermind….I see that Friend is now on the Pigs roster. Good for him…..here’s hoping he does well at the next level.

  5. Castro and Cesar have got to be promoted next month. They are really standing out at the AA level. Cesar is going to move up on the second base rankings soon. Going to be interesting what club does next year with chase and second and Freddy. Do you try chase in outfield to make room for Freddy and Cesar in 13/14?

    1. I don’t think Chase has a strong enough arm for the OF. I’d see if Freddy can play 3B and if Cesar can play the OF. That being said, there are some things we can do to shuffle them depending on the team situation at the time. If Rollins isn’t playing, Freddy can move into SS. If Howard isn’t, Chase can play 1B. Plus Chase should have lots of days off to begin with.

  6. They need to make an assessment. Cesar and Freddy do not hit for power. I think one proves to take on 3rd base everyday (Cesar – better bat), while the other becomes a utility guy (Freddy). You need to look at Utley one year at a time moving forward. Can’t see how you would keep him beyond 2013 if the knees are not good enough to play. You also need to take into consideration where guys like D. Brown, L. Castro, and T. Gillies are long term.

  7. Larry Greene has drawn a walk in each of his last nine games. I wonder who the last Phillies prospect to do that was.

    1. Only 11 games, but it’s hard not to be excited about what he’s doing. Patience has been on display since the beginning, and he’s starting to make steady contact after a slow start. If — IF — this is real, watch out when the power comes.

    1. Can’t imagine they got any prospects in return … good for Thome, he was wasting away on the Phils’ bench.

    1. Poor man’s Kendrick. No help to the farm system, but nice to be able to give Thome a chance to play.

      2. I’m not sure I would classify Simon as no help. Just going by how BA ranked them at the beginning of the season, Simon would have been ranked in the Phillies’ top 30, probably in the 15-25 range. Simon had a higher grade than Morgan and Wright, before the season.

    1. The catcher hit pretty well in GCL last year. Baltimore’s #21 prospect. That’s decent return on Thome.

          1. Per BA handbook: “Lino… impressed observers with his skills behind the plate… solidly built … well above average arm… still unrefined defensively… offers promising power potential and nice approach for teenager… won’t offer much speed.

  15. A good trade for the Phils even if they end up being nothing. With Howard coming back relatively soon and the Phils looking like a long shot for the post season they did the classy thing and gave Thome a chance to play every day and in return they get to take a flyer on a pair of prospects. If one of these guys cracks the majors it is a win.

    The catcher is labeled as being a strong defensive catcher with power potential, seems like a decent pick up.

  16. The more I look at these two players the Phillies received, the more I think the Phillies got a ‘win’. The Phillies got the Orioles’ #1 catching prospect (and automatically the Phillies’ #2 catching prospect) plus a higher rated version of the recently injured David Buchanan.

    1. I went to look for more info on Lino and i found a orioles minor league site, I think it was called orioles hangout? and on there they had him as their #10 prospect and they raved about him, the more I find the more I like as well

    1. I would prefer we get Profar rather then Olt but then again I don’t want to trade Hamels at all

      1. the problem is, hamels may only be a rental player for the rangers. if that’s the case, the return wouldn’t be a great.

Lino is big and strong with an above-average to plus throwing arm. At the plate, he’s shown some patience as well as some raw power. All of his tools are in the nascent stages and the Orioles will have to be very patient, with a big payoff down the line a possibility.

  20. I think the catcher is the key for me, he has a chance, the other kid is a kenrick type,but if you get one decent prospect for jim then its a win, imo.

      1. You know Jordan had input. He knows the people he drafted and supervised in their minors. I guess we will be having some business with Baltimore the way Gillick and his guys had input with all the Mariners that came our way. By the way, Simon is with Reading and threw the last three innings of their loss to New Hampshire. He allowed an unearned run after a Hernandez error, but he is as advertized. He threw a lot of ground balls.

  21. I like what Ruben is doing right now. Thome and Qualls trades look good. We need to be more patient with a veteran club – 81 games left. I think Victorino, not Hamels, is on the move for relief help. Juan Pierre is not an everyday LF, though he gets on base. The team needs an everyday LF (Mayberry is inconsistent) and CF (after trading Victorino). That leaves Brown and possiblly another OF called up. In the end, Hamels gets resigned.
