Box Score Recap 6-29-2012

Posting this for you all while I sit in a hotel staying cool, instead of sitting at my house burning up.  Much like I would be if I were standing next to Cameron Rupp.  For he is, literally, (am I using that term correctly?), ON FIRE.

  1. It’s great to see Roman Quinn and Larry Greene play, I’m really excited about them…Quinn is insanely fast, I don’t know about his defense at SS, but hopefully he can keep improving at the position and develop through the system by the time Rollins’ contract is up…and Larry Greene is taking walks like it’s nobody’s business…It’s nice to see such plate discipline at a young age…If they can live up to their talent, what MLB players would you compare them to?

And do you guys know when Carlos Tocci is going to start playing, I heard he’s been banged up, but will he be playing in the GCL soon?

  2. Jim Thome traded to Baltimore for prospects Kyle Simon (RHP) & Gabriel Lino (Catcher). Simon was ranked Baltimore’s 18th best prospect while Lino was ranked Baltimore’s 21st best prospect in their Prospect Handbook.

I really like the deal for the Phils gettin two top 30 prospects for a guy signed off the scrap heap before the season…

    1. Show some respect to a guy who is a HOF baseball player, an even better person, and someone who was key in the Phils becoming what they did the last 5+ years.

I agree with your take on the deal, no need for the scrap heap comment.

      1. We all love Thome but it’s kind of an accurate comment… no need to get offended.

        1. I wouldn’t call it a scrap heap portion because I’m sure Thome had other offers and he looked like he could still produce last season. But it was an extremely savvy signing. And since he won’t be able to contribute much, if anything, more for the Phillies this year, this was a great deal.

        2. It’s just a general theme around here lately that people want to get less careful and less respectful. I’m not arguing that he was the most sought after FA on the market, just be respectful. Thome has earned that, and the commenter should have said something like “not bad for a guy lots of teams could have had this past off season”

    2. Gotta like that 1993 birth date for Lino playing in the SAL League. Kevin Goldstein doesn’t give glowing reviews for either guy but like you said, getting anything for Thome is a nice bonus.

      1. Yeah, that was my first thought. That young in A-, and only in his 3rd year, so he has time to develop. Sounds good. Walked enough in small samples in ’10 and ’11 to seem like he’s got some plate discipline. This year, swinging away a bit more.

  3. Yeah, my first thought is that the return is pretty great for a guy who wasn’t going to see much PT the rest of the year. I’d like to see some scouting reports, especially on the catcher. Simon looks like a real groundball pitcher.

Per BA handbook: “Lino… impressed observers with his skills behind the plate… solidly built … well above average arm… still unrefined defensively… offers promising power potential and nice approach for teenager… won’t offer much speed.

      1. And from MLB.com, Jon Mayo:
Matt Wieters doesn’t have to look over his shoulder just yet, but if everything comes together for this young backstop, he could be a good one. Lino is big and strong with an above-average to plus throwing arm. At the plate, he’s shown some patience as well as some raw power. All of his tools are in the nascent stages and the Orioles will have to be very patient, with a big payoff down the line a possibility.

      2. Kyle Simon…MLB.Com, Jon Mayo.

        Kyle Simon….Rank: 20 …Frederick Keys (A+)….ETA: 2014 ….Position: RHP

        Age: 21, DOB: 08/18/1990
        Bats: R, Throws: R
        Height: 6′ 5″, Weight: 225
        Drafted: 2011, 4th (125)
The Orioles thought enough of the big right-hander out of Arizona to send him up to Class A Advanced Frederick for his full-season debut. Simon isn’t going to blow hitters away, but is a groundball machine thanks to a heavy sinking fastball. He throws a slider, cutter and changeup as well, with a good feel for all of them. His ceiling might be somewhat limited, but he should be a workhorse in the back end of a rotation in the not-too-distant future.

  4. Catcher sounds like a high ceiling guy who has a long way to go if he ever even gets there, but I like that upside better than somebody whos ceiling might be a big league backup at best someday. Really good trade. Now it’s Pence’s turn
