Box Score Recap 6-28-2012

Brody Colvin had a really good June.  So, if he has an equally good July, do you promote him?

  1. I would let Colvin regain his confidence in Clearwater all year. Then move him up to Reading next year. There really isnt any rush.

    1. Agreed, but it sure is nice to see him have zero walks. If he puts it together, go ahead and give him a taste of AA at the end of the year.

    2. I think that leaving him in Clearwater all year might have the opposite effect on his confidence. He’s already behind his counterparts. I say that if he continues to do well, reward him by promoting him to Reading and see how he does.

      1. I lean towards letting Colvin stay in Clearwater for most of the year, and then maybe giving him a few starts in Reading at the end of the year just to let him get a taste of AA.

    3. It depends how many starts he has left this year. I’d be in no rush to promote him after 3 good ones in 4 tries, but if he strings together another 7 or 8 good ones I might say go for it.

  2. I agree with nik he needs to be in clearwater all year, with clearwater being such a pitcher friendly league there is no excuses for him, its about time he had a couple good starts, it helps when you don’t walk everyone

  3. Two SO vs. eight BB in the GCL … and every player that drew a walk also notched a hit. If that’s not a sign of the importance of plate discipline, I don’t know what is.

I’m wondering if the org has made a concerted effort to focus on plate discipline with the young guys this year. Multiple players in the GCL and at Williamsport are showing impressive discipline.

    1. More likely they are just facing pitching at that level that struggles to throw strikes. I doubt the Phillies are spending much time in SS ball working on anything more that having these guys to go through their drills and getting used to playing everyday.

      Like

      1. If that’s the case, I find it even more encouraging that players like LG Jr., Walding and Cozens have shown the ability to recognize the difference so early in their careers.

    2. I believe that the Phillies’ minor league staff focuses on plate discipline at every level of the minors. The players study what is a good at-bat. They learn to look within a zone and to swing at the pitch that they can do the most with. I think that is why they do so well magainst mediocher pitching.

  4. Agree with Colvin. Let him have a chance at some extended success. At most, move him to Reading (If he’s still pitching well) late in the year just for an appearance or two just so he can go into the off-season with a sense of where he needs to be to compete at that next level.

  5. So who moves up from Clearwater to fill David Buchanan’s spot now that he’s lost for the year?

    Like

    1. If they’re willing to move Bonilla into the starter’s role (like they did last year), I’d nominate Knigge.

      Like

      1. Not sure why that keeps coming up. The Bonilla ship has sailed. There’s no indication that the team is stretching him out, and he’s been dominant in the pen. Leave him there; as we’ve learned this year, you can never have enough strike-throwing relief prospects.

        Like

        1. There’s definitely value to leaving him in the pen. But if I remember correctly, he was pretty darn effective as a starter in Lakewood. And as much a need as the bullpen is with the big club right now, you can never have too many starting pitching prospects.

          Like

        2. Until I hear something definitive from the organization, I’ll keep hoping he goes back into the rotation eventually. If he were starting this year, assuming his numbers wouldn’t be quite as fantastic and assuming that he’d still be in Clearwater, he’s probably our 4th best pitching prospect. Maybe even 3rd. Just seems odd to write him off as a starter when all he’s had is success.

          Like

    2. Hollands and Whatcott are in the rotation now, with May and JRod and Hyatt. Sounds like that’s what they’re doing for now. No need for another.

  6. Starting to get (cautiously) excited about Cozens. 2 walks, a double, and no K’s today. He now has as many walks as strikeouts and a .250 ISO.

Has anyone seen him, or heard from someone who has?

    Like

    1. very excited about Cozens, hopefully he can make good contact when he does swing. Larry Greene 3Ks last night… not a great sign.

      Like

      1. True, but he has 10 walks now and 13 strike outs and a 419 OBP. We’ll just have to see him play a lot more games to know what he’s all about. There is always the possibility he becomes a “3 true outcomes” type player ala Carlos Pena or Adam Dunn. Pure speculation but that’s all we can really do with these young guys.

    1. Right now, Kendrick is starter #6 behind the regular rotation. Cloyd has to be #7, but Kendrick going 6 scoreless after his 1st inning meltdown yesterday bought him another couple starts, I’d bet. If he has even one game in those two where he does something like 7IP and 2 ER, he’s probably locked in until Doc comes back.

      Like

      1. Yep. If the Phillies did that, they’d look dumb for extending Kendrick to a 2 year deal. The man getting paid more always gets more opportunities, sadly.

  7. The starting pen in LV should be Cisco , Bonilla, Friend , Rosenberg and Knigge they are the top 5 relief pitchers in my opinion in the organization . from that group they can determine who pitches the 6, 7, 8 and 9th inning . Aumount needs to go back to Reading to get his act together since he is not ready for prime time action based on his numbers. The big club needs to know what if any talent they have in the pen @ LV before they trade for some stop gap 37 yr old ( see Qualls ) to plug a hole.

    1. Aumont’s issue is mechanics, not sure how he’s better served trying to fix that in AA vs AAA. I would leave him where he is.

      Like

      1. I have watched Aumont pitch a lot this year. He has all the pitches and all the ability in the world. As you suggest, once those mechanical issues are ironed out, he could dominate at any level, including the major league level. The pitches are there – he does not need to go back to AA; it would hurt his confidence and would be a complete waste of time. I think he is better served remaining in AAA, where he cannot get away with borderline pitches, and not being rushed to the majors, where the scrutiny and pressure would not promote a productive learning environment. The Phillies are handling Aumont just fine. Folks, sometimes with these very big pitchers, it takes a long time for them to come around. It took forever for Randy Johnson to become consistent but when he hit that point, he was lights out. Aumont may be much the same way. He’ll be ready when he’s ready, whenever that will be.

        Like

        1. I went back and watched Aumont pitch last night on the MILB package. The only thing standing between him and the majors is a little consistency. He throws SEVERAL plus pitches. His curveball is one of the best I have ever seen – if he can command it, it might become a plus plus pitch as it is virtually unhittable. His two-seam fastball is likewise devastating and he can throw a very good four-seam fastball, but he has a little trouble controlling that pitch. He throws very hard – anywhere between 94-99 depending on how much you trust the Lehigh Valley gun. His stuff is so good that, he does not even need to worry much about command – if he can control his breaking pitches even a fair amount of the time, he will be a good major league pitcher. And, when you see how many pitches he can throw well, you can understand why they were so tempted to use him as a starter and why, in the back of their minds, they may still be hoping they can convince him to start again in a few years. He has that much ability and potential.

  8. Let’s see if Knigge can get out some AA guys before we decide he’s ready for AAA. Also, IMO, Aumont isn’t going anywhere, nor should he.

    1. Didn’t you know the ability to get guys out in A ball, automatically makes you better than the guys already in AAA?

      1. Lets give him a shot . Do you know Knigge can’t get out AAA hitters ?. He is 23 not an 18 yr old in the GCL . AS far as Aumont he has shown he can’t cut in in AAA .. check his numbers .

        1. You’re coming off as stupid my friend, Aumont has plus stuff across the board and has the potential to become an elite closer, plus he is already on the 40 man roster, sending him down to Reading would only hurt his confidence.

          Like

          1. Stupid ? I’m glad your not the GM , if so Aumont would be the Phillies closer. Potential has got many managers fired . This game is about RESULTS. This is what the third year that Amount has not delivered even with his plus stuff . Ryan Duran once threw @ 101 mph with poor results .

        2. Most A+ pitchers would not succeed in AAA. It seems to me that to claim a FSL pitcher would be better than our IL pitchers, the burden of proof is on you. I think except for Aumont, the Ironpigs bullpen has been strong this season. Aumont, he’s an adjustment away from being a successful big leaguer. He has no command. But he’s not even getting hit around. It’s all walks doing him in. You don’t give up on a player like that, not this early.

          1. Perhaps Ruben is going to package Aumont and Domo, with someone from the big club, ie Vic or Hunter Pence, to help the team in some fashion. Both are high-ceiling guys and there may be a AL team out there who would be willing to take a shot with them.

    15. Deivi Grullon, c, Dominican Republic
    Ht.: 5-10. Wt.: 175. B-T:

Grullon is a defensive-oriented catcher whom some scouts prefer to David Rodriguez. He draws physical comparisons to Carlos Ruiz. Grullon has a plus arm that could get even stronger and some scouts like his accuracy. He moves well behind the plate, has good hands and frames pitches well, giving him the raw ingredients to be an above-average defender.

Grullon has shown a decent approach at the plate with some ability to work the count and gap power, but his bat is a question mark. His swing has length, and teams would like to see more production from him against live pitching. Several teams have been tied to Grullon, but many think his asking price is too high. He has also been slowed by an ankle injury during the DPL’s spring training trip to the United States. The Athletics, Astros, Tigers, Phillies and Rangers are among those who have been linked to Grullon.

    —-

    20. Jose Pujols, of, Dominican Republic
    Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 175. B-T: R-R.

Pedro Nivar, who is known as “Nube” in the Dominican Republic, has trained some of the island’s top power bats in recent years, including Mariners corner outfielders Phillips Castillo and Hersin Martinez. His top player this year is Pujols, who some scouts think is a clone of Martinez, with more bat speed and projection. A 16-year-old from Santo Domingo, Pujols might have the best raw power among the top prospects in Latin America this year. With his height and long, lanky limbs, Pujols has plenty of room to fill out but already generates his power with bat speed. In batting practice, he has hit mammoth blasts, but the big question is whether the power will translate. He’s pull-oriented, takes a big uppercut and has had trouble connecting when the pitch isn’t grooved, so he’ll have to make adjustments. Pujols has run average times in the 60-yard dash and will play an outfield corner. Sources believe the Phillies have the most interest in Pujols.

  11. I know Cloyd isnt regarded as a high caliber prospect, but I find it absolutely ridiculous that they arent going to give him a shot on Wednesday in NY. Just for the fact that nobody has ever faced him would be a good idea in my mind. Its getting to the point where the big club cant afford to wait and needs to do something. If you give him a start before the break, you can even send him back down for the last couple games of the 1st half and carry an extra arm in the pen. Does anyone have a valid reason why he doesnt make Kendrick’s start? No years of service garbage, please.

    1. I agree Cloyd should have pitched Wed night instead of the bullpen crew .Just another mistake by the Phillies

      1. He would’ve been on short rest.

Why he wasn’t scratched on Saturday, I have no idea.

    2. The Phillies have said they will try to make do with the players they have. I think Cloyd and Rodriguez would be good to try out. The Braves do it all the time with their great young pitchers, and they are ahead of us in the standings. Why shouldn’t we?

      Like

      1. There’s nothing to indicate that Rodriguez is ready for the majors – he needs to succeed in AAA before we can draw any conclusions. In my opinion, the two starters that are closest are Cloyd (probably ready or close to ready – if he can handle the 5th starter role, Kendrick can return to the bullpen where he is more valuable) and Pettibone (may or may not be close to ready, but could end up being a mid to high rotation starter at the end of the day – but he’s so potentially valuable that they have to be worried about messing him up, I know I would be careful with him).

        Like

        1. By the way, I think we are being a little unfair to the Phillies. The reason the bullpen has struggled is a staggering combination of injuries and underperformance. Look at the 7 man bullpen that was anticipated and you can see what I mean – and this does not even count DeFratus, who probably would have been the first man called up from the minors.

Herndon – injured, gone for the season
Stutes – injured, gone for the season
Contreras – injured, gone for the season
Qualls – unexpectedly horrible, had to be released
Kendrick – had to move to starting rotation due to injuries to starters, dramatically limits the team’s options in games where they fall behind early
Bastardo – has been okay, but has not rebounded entirely from the bad September last year
Papelbon – for all the hubub about his large contract, he has been as advertised (although I am a little worried about his drop in velocity)

As a result, rookies such as Rosenberg, Schwimer, and Savery have been forced into roles for which they are not ready. You can blame them for Qualls (although, at the time, it seemed like a good signing), but aside from that, they’ve been hit by terrible luck.

  14. When it comes to the bullpen and minor leaguers, I think the Phillies have depth. They have quite a few good relievers in Lehigh Valley. The problem is that they’re all guys you want as the 11th/12th men on the pitching staff. Obviously you can use a pitcher like that on the team. The Phillies are trying to use about five of those guys right now. There are guys in the minors who might be able to pitch in that 11th/12th man role like Tyler Knigge, but that’s not where the big club is hurting.

this site was founded by PhuturePhillies to talk about the minor league players. If you don’t find the early results in the career of L. Greene interesting then you are probably in the wrong place.

As far as “adult” conversation, I guess that’s in the eye of the beholder because I see very little adult conversation but rather a whole lot of whining and bitching about things completely unrelated to the minor league system.

Now maybe the new “owners” are fine with the site turning into a chat room where people come to complain about the big league club on a daily basis. If that’s the case, then I guess I’m in the wrong place.

His advanced stats are fine for a 19 year old, and what you are seeing is an incredibly bad BABIP, which has a great amount of luck involved.

There is no argument that Aumont has big league, fastball and curve, but so do other guys, its being consistant with there pitches that separates the triplea guys from the majors, throwing hard with no control isnt going to get it done, except in some cases like a mitch williams,I just dont believe imo that aumont will ever get it, there are a lot of guys with talent, but you have to know how to use it,and this kid so far has b een a bust, pitchers are so hard to judge, some can get away with less stuff, with pinpoint control in the strike zone, just a thought

    1. He may never be good – we can never know for sure. But he is still very young and the odds favor him at least being a decent major league reliever and the upside is there for him to be a dominant major league pitcher. Why can’t people accept the notion that, just because one player takes longer to mature and develop than another player, does not mean he is a “bust.” For crying out loud the kid is, what, 22? A bust? How can you say that?

It is very common for pitchers that size to struggle repeating their mechanics and it takes longer for them to get used to them as well, give him time, even though there is no guarantee on him, the odds are on Aumont’s side for him to pitch in the big leagues.
