Some Quick Thoughts:
– The lack of K’s are concerning for Cloyd especially considering he isn’t a groundball pitcher
– I can’t imagine a flight to Bowie from Clearwater and a double header was good for Asche
– Pettibone is looking better and better
– I wish Castro would walk more so that I could be more excited about him, .293 BA isn’t bad though
– Colvin with a good game but could he be more up and down
– Warner had another good game
– This WPT has become much watch and it is awesome to see Larry Greene rack up walks even with the batting average low
Is there really that much of a difference in AA and AAA talent wise? I wouldn’t mind seeing him get some time at AAA if he’s pitching well to let Biddle get his feet wet at AA.
Unless there is a real reason to push someone up I don’t see them doing it, there isn’t a huge jump to AAA and I think they like them pitching to Valle. That being said I think they actually might push J-Rod to AAA to see if he can survive slightly older hitters who has seen a little more before to see if the stuff continues to play
So i’ve never really read anything about the VSL…can anyone tell me anything about Francisco Herrera… 2 for 4 with a homer last night and he has been killing it all year…and i vaguely remember people talking about him on here before…he is 18
AndyB will probably chime in here but I’ll put my 2 cents in. VSL is a weird league this year. There are only 4 teams. We, on this board, have been questioning the talent level in the league. Two teams, including the Phils, do very well and 2 teams look terrible (in the standings). It’s very hard to figure out if the 18 year old Herrera is a decent player or a good player or an excellent player. He hits well. I’ll give him that. He has a little pop in his bat. He’s listed as a 3rd baseman but he has 6 Errors in 11 games at 3rd. He also plays 1st and DH. If he proves he can stick at 3rd, and that is extremely suspect, I’d give him a shot to be state-side next year. If he’s only a 1st baseman, but he continues to hit and show that .505 slugging % then I’d bring him in for EST after the season. I’m not optimistic but he is intriging. He might be a tease.
I am sort of in the middle about him too. I liked him last year as a young above average offensive player who could play 3B. This year the stats are elevated everywhere so it is fair to assume the competition is pretty bad. I would not put too much stock in the errors as these fields could be mediocre and the scoring could be inconsistent.
The most important factor in evaluating him however is that he did NOT get promoted to GCL this year like Herlis Rodriguez and a few others. I know there was the possibility of guys like Walding needing to play 3B at GCL (which did not happen of course), but the team could have easily given him Carlos Valenzuela’s playing time for instance. So not promoting him probably means that they do not think he is a decent prospect unfortunately. The reality is that good prospects (probably more offensive than pitching) rarely spend more than a year in the VSL or DSL. The Phillies are changing that a bit with some direct promotions to Williamsport, though more of them come from the DSL rather than the VSL. With lousy competition in the VSL I would think they would get the real prospects promoted sooner rather than later.
Nice performances from Pettibone and Warner. A pitcher on the 40-man can get called up for the DH tomorrow. I really think it’s got to Rosenberg. Aumont pitched today. Could be JC, I guess, but I doubt it.
Wednesday is the day they are saying there will be a need for a pitcher. May could be the one. He is the guy with major league ability. The others with experience are Misch and Elarton.
Not for a start…just an extra man for the double header. I think the new CBA says you can call up a pitcher for a double header day without him having to go through regular recall/option rules. Or something.
Agree on May, but Cloyd threw 96 pitches yesterday, they won’t throw a young kid on 3 days rest after that pitch count. Beginning to look more and more like a bullpen game or Misch. Could be Valdes for 3 and Savery for 3.
I dunno, if it’s for one game, why not bring him up and give him a taste? Yea sure, maybe he gets wrecked, but he has an idea of what its like pitching in the big leagues. If he knows its just for one game, I don’t see why its a bad idea. He’ll get sent down regardless, so it’s not like he has to worry about keeping his spot
Suggestion: Check out this guy Willians Astudillo (C-1b) at our Clwtr GCL. If you want to make some money betting, a good way would be to bet beforehand that he would NOT strike out in a game today; or choose tomorrow’s game etc. Last season in the Carribean summer Dominican Lg he went to bat 211 times and struck out only TWO (2) times!
That is just unfreakingbelieveable, but the stats don’t lie I think. He had 3 (three) hits today and hasn’t yet struck out in 16 PAs.
Art – I was checking him out the other day as well. His age will work against him a little bit (he’ll be 21 in October) but not if he brings the same success that he had in the VSL. 2 strikeouts in 211 PAs is spectacular. And in 2010, it was 4 times in 199 PAs. Remarkable
Swinging at everything is not necessarily plate discipline. More experienced pitchers will stop throwing him strikes. Let’s see if he can handle that first.
His approach at the plate is to swing early and often. Lots of young players do this in the lower levels against pitchers without the command to throw balls just out of the strike zone. This approach works less well as one goes up the ladder. Astudillo certainly makes lots of contact. But he hardly ever walks so you can’t say he has decent plate discipline. They are very different things.
If Astudillo can catch he might have a chance to advance. That was my big question about him last year when he hardly played catcher. He probably does not have enough offense to be a regular at the corner infield spots.
If you are trying to be funny, you are being inappropriate. If you are trying to be literal, you are probably incorrect, unless Tyler is a very ill young man. I doubt that. Try to keep your comments to baseball.
I don’t know what we have in Cloyd, but it’s nearing time for us to find out. Looks like the Phils will need a spot-starter for Wednesday so it won’t be Cloyd, but his time is near.
Pettibone is a MLB pitcher in the making. His K:BB ration and Ks per 9 all trending in the right direction. Cloyd and Pettibone will be contending for a back-of-the-rotation spot with the big club next year.
Cam Perkins with the GW hit in his NYPL debut last night
Perkins expected to start at WPort, he must have been plenty ticked off going to the GCL with the kids. His first game, batting third, game winner, that’s a good day.
He expected to , or is expected to start now? Now that they moved Stassi up to Lakewood I would say he could alternate at 1B with Serritella and mostly DH. I seen in the few games he was at GCL he started off at 3B with Carlos Valenzuela at 1B and then they switched them. Maybe he is seen by org as more of a 1B/OF type at this time.
Whirlwind day for Perkins. He said he was up at 3 am, picked up at the hotel at 4, flew out of Tampa to Philly at 5:30, say around Philly before riding the smallest plane he’s ever seen to Williamsport. He didn’t expect to play but Tracy had him in the three-hole DHing. Was hit by a pitch in his first AB. In his last AB Tracy gave him a bunt sign with first and second and no outs. Perkins said he was unsure if it was a bunt or hit and run sign so he just swung away. Roman Quinn thought it was a hit and run and took off for third. Perkins pops the ball up and Tracy is yelling at Quinn to go back. Ball finds grass and Quinn starts running home but forgot to touch third. He goes back to touch third as Chace Numata is running up his back and touches third and slides in just in front of the throw home to score the winning run.
Not sure if this times out, but I wonder if Perkins was going to WPT then Asche got the FSL All-Star nod and that held everyone up for a couple days. Probably not that complicated.
Not that he is Cole Hamels, but the only close prospects to contributing right now are a LF (Brown) and three starters (Cloyd, Pettibone, May) and possibly a backup catcher late next year (Valle). It almost makes sense to let Cole walk and go with Halladay Lee Worley and then leave the last two spots for those three (May needs to be taken slowly).
You all have to stop thinking about the Phillies as if they were the Rays or the 1999 Phillies. This Phillies team has big time money when most teams do not. Monetary resources not used on current stars will be used to purchase or acquire other stars. If the Phils do not sign Hamels they will have up to 25 million to spend on other needs. As for Halladay, if he is still effective, he and the Phils will work something out – if no they will use that twent million on something else. This is a new and better era. Stop worrying.
He allows his share of walks (4 per 9) and even though his ERA is great, his FIP is 2.80. He is also stranding runners at a ridiculous rate. Maybe the decision makers see this, believe there is a little luck involved, and want to see more than 22 innings of stranding base runners.
Totally agree with the logjam situation there, as the bullpen in LHV has been pretty solid all year with the exception of Aumont. I almost thought he would’ve started the year in LHV, but once again, the logjam persisted. Same thing happened to him last year as well, as he was tearing up A+ ball after playing AA in ’10. Took him a half a year to get up to Reading last year where he pitched decent for them. Still would’ve given him a chance over JC (who has pitched well in AAA), but sometimes in them minors, transactions make you scratch your head.
As for his walks, its never been great in his career, last year was by far his lowest BB/9. I still think he can make it someday, just wish the Phils would give the guy a chance to prove himself in AAA and beyond.
This bullpen is killing us. Is it way too crazy to try calling up another 1 or 2 guys from the minors to see if we can catch lightning in a bottle maybe? Aumont? Bonilla? Bastardo and Qualls are just not getting it done right now.
Relief pitchers give up runs… it happens. Neither guy’s been consistent but there’s not one guy in the organization that’s a noticeable improvement on paper.
I am officially Cody Asche, Cesar Hernandez, and Leandro Castro watching. The stats are there. All should be invites to spring training next year. Jiwan James seems so borderline at this point, plenty of speed, great defense, and .250 to .260 hitter. He just needs to cut down the strikeout rate.
While I picked Castro as a sleeper preseason I wouldn’t get too excited about him yet. He really has not show any kind of plate discipline and his OBP is just not very good right now. That normally means his game won’t translate to the big leagues.
