Hot or Not

A look back at the last 7 days from 6/13–6.19.  Hitters require 11AB’s to be eligible.

Some thoughts: Cody Asche just keeps doing his thing…I cant imagine he will be with CLearwater much longer.

–Anthony Hewitt was perhaps the most productive offensive player in the system during the last time period.

–Cody Overbeck has really leveled off and some thought should certainly be given to getting Darin Ruf some AAA playing time before the end of the year.

–Brody Colvin is back on the not hot list while Jon Pettibone continues with his very solid season.

–When will Justin Friend get a real chance….?

  1. As alway an excellent analysis–this site is always an interesting place to get baseball information. Thanks.

Does Justin Friend have to have a minus ERA for him to get some attention? Years ago he pitched about one inning in AAA–it is about time the Phillies moved him to Lehigh Valley. He is going to be 26 YO tomorrow. I was at spring training in Clearwater in 2010 and watched him–he was like a bulldog–tough and intense. We need some of that in the bigs.

      1. You are correct–it must have been 2011. Have been to Clearwater for spring training for more than 20 years–some minor leaguers seem to stand out–Friend was one, Bastardo was another and years before Brandon Duckworth.

  2. Quite ridiculous not to promote Asche and Friend at this point. I realize promotions shouldnt be made with the issues that the big club is having in mind, but I think this is the exception. If Asche goes and bats .300 in Reading the rest of the year, it could really change where Ruben goes to solve the issue at 3rd next year.
I really hope Collier continues this through the end of the year. OrganIzation needs to start having a few of these “toolsy” Outfielders develop into players.

    1. Who’s Ruben going to commit to long term at 3rd next year regardless of whether Ashe rakes or not?

Anything he does this off season is more than likely going to be a stop gap, mostly because of the players available.

    2. I expect the Phillies to exercise Polanco’s option for next year for $5.5 million. I would hope they could convince Polanco to take some games at second too. That would make him incredibly valuable. But as it is, Polanco, if healthy, should be worth at least $5.5 million. If, for some reason, Asche comes on strong, Polanco is a fantastic role player and insurance policy.

    3. Why the buzz about Code Asche when Darin Ruf has been hitting over 300 in Reading

  3. Hewitt is still one of those players I dream of the “what-if”… even though I know his odds of becoming Jose Bautista (or whatever comp you want to use) are like a tenth of a percent… Ruiz didn’t develop plate discipline until the Majors…

He’s frusterating as hell, but you can see the raw “tools” are there and he improves ever so slightly each year, just enough that I don’t want to cut him.

    1. Not that I’m complaining but Mario started the year as a reliever and not a very good one. He was definitely doing the job at CLW so he deserved to be moved (and he is on the roster). Reading’s been going with an all reliever outing every 5th day so it was time for a starter to move up. It may be a one time shot for now but at least he’s out of the Florida heat. Crap, I think it’s hotter up here than in FLA. Maybe that’s why he was called up. He can pitch in the high heat, high humidity. Congrats, Mario.

  4. I’m actually very encouraged by Hewitt’s year so far. I think we are all properly skeptical. However, what he’s done so far this year tells me two things: one, he didn’t get discouraged by his absolutely horrendous start, and two, he is actually developing that power that the Phillies foresaw when the drafted him. Sure, he’s still a long shot, and time is against him, but I don’t think it’s out of the question that this slight incremental improvement leads to a breakthrough. When players with his sort of natural gifts put it together, they often put it together all at once.

    1. He always had that power, he just never connected enough to make it useful.

Made up this list while researching Cody Asche. Highest ISOs (Isolated Power) in the system thus far:

      1. Darin Ruf
      2. Kelly Dugan
      3. Brian Pointer
      4. Anthony Hewitt
      5. Cody Overbeck

  5. If you look at his stats, Hewitt’s BB and K rates have been improving- ever so gradually- over the past few years. This guy was an ultra-project. I think that as much as he is a longshot and the risk of failure is still enormous, it is not time to give up on him yet.
