Box Score Recap 6-17-2012

Williamsport starts tonight.  Josh Warner on the bump for the ‘Cutters.  GCL also starts today, with TBD on the hill.  Is he that Canadian guy from last year’s draft?

A gold star to anyone who got my reference to this guy without having to think about it.  Cause that was a pretty obscure reference, and not really all that well crafted.

  1. What’s up with Tyler Cloyd? His normal turn in the rotation was skipped Saturday – hasn’t pitched since June 11th. Would he be called up to pitch against the Rockies? Don’t seem likely as the probables are Hamels, Blanton, Worley and then Lee against the Rays.

  2. So Aumont allows 2 hits and 1 walk with no strikeouts but doesn’t allow a run to score. Interesting. Really need Aumont to start showing some conistency. I think a September call-up this year is a pipe dream at this point.

    1. I actually see that line as positive for Aumont. Its clear he didn’t have his best control and yet didn’t give up a run. Maybe he is learning to pitch when his stuff isn’t on. In the past he would have gotten rocked for multiple runs in that situation.

    1. So what’s the story on J-Rod? 8th in the EL in ERA (43 qualifiers), 6th in total Ks, 9th in K%, and 7th in HR/9. He is still just 21.

However his BB% is 7th *worst* and his FIP is way higher than his ERA and is just middle-of-the-pack. He remains a fly-ball pitcher, so his low HR/9 rate might be a tad fortunate (hence the higher FIP).

Anyone read any recent scouting reports? Anything to get excited about here besides the numbers?

      1. If you listen to some people, he has little upside. His fastball won’t play in the big leagues. He’s deceptive but big leaguers will lambast him. The only problem is that’s been said about him when he moved to Lakewood. “He’ll get smacked around in A ball. Then came Clearwater.” “Okay, AA will definitely be his downfall” All the kid does is get people out and win. I don’t know if we can have that on the big club. This is all in jest as you may have surmised. I’ve always been high on him and he hasn’t let me down yet. It’s like watching a stock go up and up and up. Everyone and their grandmother starts saying that the stock can’t go up forever. But I’ll ride it until starts to disappoint me.

    2. I was at the game. He had a no hitter going for 5 and 2/3. Had two wild pitches in the 6th.I think he was trying to throw to hard with runners on. Had a breaking pitch or two that batters back away from the plate just to have a strike called. Fast ball only top out at 90, was throwing 86-88 consistently. Threw maybe 2 or 3 65-70mph change ups in there as well as a change of pace that batters where way out in front of. Nothing looked really impressive, except for the fact that he just keep getting batters out. I figured the 2nd time he faced the hitters he’d get hit around more, but it didn’t happen. Even when everything was falling apart in the 6th he still work through it and got out of the inning and came back for the 7th and pitch well. Saw May pitch earlier in the season and he look impressive, but got hit around. Then watching J-Rod yesterday nothing impressive, but they(Akron) just couldn’t get a hit. Don’t know what to make of it. I just hope he keeps it up.

      1. Thanks a lot, Nate. Everyone says the Reading gun is slow, so if he is really 87-90, that might work as a #5 starter, especially if it moves and has deception.

However, as others have posted many times, upper 80s for a RHP almost never cuts it in the majors. I guess we shall see.

        1. The more I hear about JRod, the more I think Josh Collmenter. A guy with a really deceptive delivery with some amount of success in the minors. Collmenter was a college sign, and therefore older, so I know the age thing won’t match up. But, JRod strikes me as a guy that could have some success one, maybe even two times through the league and then it would look like he was throwing beach balls.

  3. We remember the Phils baby aces of a couple of years ago: May, Colvin, Pettibone, Rodriguez (and Cozart). Who would have thought that Julio is looking like the first to make it to AAA?

    1. Gordon Heimueller (Phoulz) on JRod:
……..”Julio…he just keeps getting people out. You talk about Trevor May and Jon Pettibone, who are very good pitchers, and Julio’s been right there with them. He doesn’t have the fastballs those guys have, doesn’t have the breaking balls some of those guys have. But he gets people out. He’s got a fastball that naturally cuts. You just look at the radar gun and you watch him, and you watch the hitters’ reactions and there’s something there, I wish I could teach it. He hides the ball, he’s got nice, loose, long arms and the ball has some movement on it. And his breaking ball’s getting better and the one thing he does do very well- he don’t like to lose. He’s very competitive. He goes out there and he expects- he doesn’t hope to get you out, he expects to get you out.”

      1. Julio reminds me of John Rauch all limbs coming at you, by the time he releases the ball with his length it looks like he is right on top of you. I think as a starter MLB hitters would eventually figure him out but like Rauch he might fit nicely into a bullpen.

As for getting excited about something this season he is averaging 8.7K’s/9 and for his career its 10.1 that type of K rate would play in the bigs.

    2. Pettibone off to a good start this morning. 4 innings, 6ks, 1 hit and no walks or runs. Of course I probably jinxed.

Makes you also wonder how good this Akron offense is as well.

      1. 9:35am start. Now 8k thru 6. Nice to see the uptick in Ks since his first handful of April starts. Even better is the simultaneous drop in BB rate. That’s a good display for a 21yr old getting his first taste of AA hitters

        1. He could have been playing around with his slider, which was a fringe pitch. Wonder if he’s getting a better handle on it now.

        2. 7 of the 8 Ks have been swinging, usually a good sign that he is fooling hitters. This strikeout total is a big aberration, maybe Akron is a bunch of free swingers (j-Rod had 10 Ks last night). Either way, Pettibone is still generating lots of groundballs, which is generally a positive.

    3. Akron’s record is 42-23 so not sure that guarantees their a good offensive team but they can’t be too bad.

For all of the things that have gone wrong this year, it sure is nice to see May, Julio, and Pettibone all continuing to pitch really well in a much tougher league. The jump to AA is a big one and the Eastern League (Reading’s ballpark) is a hitter’s park so I think these 3 have really taken a bigger step forward this year than we’ve realized. Will be very interesting to watch Julio pitch later this year in AA when he’s facing hitters for a second or third time and see if he has similar success as he’s had thus far.

      1. It seems like Pettibone is really starting to accelerate past the other pitchers, in terms of development. May struggles with command and Rodriguez has a more limited upside. If Pettibone continues to pitch well over the next 3 weeks or so I would strongly consider promoting him to LhV in the middle of July, with the possibility of late August call-up.

    1. I’m likely in the minority here, but I’m higher on Dugan than Altherr. I think both can still be considered prospects though, if for no other reason than their age. Prospects of the fringe variety though

      1. I think it depnds on your definition of Prospect Quinton Berry case in point. Very small sample size but he might stick with the Tigers as a 4th OF finally at age 27. Age and Athleticism is on Aaron’s side so he’ll get plenty of chances to prove he can play.

I like Dugan as well but because he is less athletic (defensively) he’ll have to to rake these next two seasons to get a shot.

I still contend a premier MLB player will demonstrate premier stats within his 1st year or two of minor league ball. Absent of injuries mind you. Everyone seemed surprised by David Freese last year but go back and look at his minor league numbers he was career OBP .384 .915 OPS and .307 AVG.

          1. Also has a 25% strike-out rate. His numbers are definately going to come back to reality as his sample size grows. He had a 5-5 game on Sunday that raised is average 50 points. Was hitting .235 for the month of June prior to that game.

          2. I have to agree with you on Berry. I saw him a lot in Reading, and he seems like a good guy, but I’ll be absolutely shocked if he ends up being a long term major league player (even in a fill in capacity). I think he comes crashing back to earth sooner rather than later.

Or he could prove me wrong and have an Endy Chavez type career. Never thought Chavez would make it either.

            1. Personally, even if this is just a great hot streak (which it 99.9% likely is), its awesome to see a guy that toiled as long as Quintin did have some small success in the majors. I love it when that happens for guys that I follow in the minors like that.

I feel the same way about Joe Savery to be honest. I know he’s nothing special even as a LOOGY but its still cool to see him make it after everything…even if its just short-term.

    2. Altherr is definitely still a prospect. He has a ton of tools and while he’s not setting the world afire at the plate, he has a clue. Dugan meanwhile is age appropriate for his league (still just 21), and his batting numbers are well above league average.

  4. Manaure Martinez (had to check twice on the proper spelling) started in the GCL today. 5 Ks through 3 IP. Nice start for the 20 year old..

    1. Cousin’s started in RF and is the only Phillie to reach base. He walked. Probably scared the crap out of the pitcher. Tromp started in CF and is batting 3rd. Valenzuela, who hit .331 last year in GCL, is playing 1B and hitting cleanup. Cameron Perkins is at 3B. Gustavo Gonzalez is at 2B and Angelo Mora’s at SS. Astudillo is catching. Herlis Rodriguez started in LF and is leading off. Zach Taylor is the DH.

I’m really disappointed, now I’ve got to go to each teams webpage to get the box score. It’s really only a few more clicks so i guess I shouldn’t complain and they might change it back.

        1. Especially since he was kind of a touted signing. He didn’t do anything initially but I figured after last year the Phils would at least give him a chance.

  6. Actually have the Crosscutters game on television here, just got home to turn it on.

-Roman Quinn immediately looked good on defense at shortstop.

-Warner looks to have quite shaky command, but decent raw stuff.

  7. Shaky defense by the Cutters. Infield throw went past pitcher Warner covering the bag. Catcher Numata chased down the throw, but that left home uncovered and allowed another run to score.

    1. Larry (who you obviously meant) went 0-4 with 2ks… would love a report on the kind of at bats he had.

      1. Didn’t get much of an impression beyond that he didn’t make good contact at any point. But in one game there’s only so much you can gleam from that.

      2. I didn’t have a problem with Larry’s at-bats tonight. Put a couple good swings on some fastballs in his first at-bat, then got caught looking at a breaking ball on the outter half. Struck out again in his second at-bat, swinging over top an off-speed pitch (slider, change-up maybe) on a 2-2 pitch with a runner on second. After that I thought he just got a little anxious. Third at-bat rolled one over to first base, and got out in front of a soft-tosser in his fourth at-bat. Just seemed to get more and more anxious as the night went one. One good swing at the ball, or a base hit will calm him down in a hurry. There’s going to be a lot of nights like these since this lineup is primarily high school draft kids. Just part of the growing pains.

  8. Greene fouled off a few shoulder high mediocre fastballs in a couple at bats. He was aggressive in those swings, but late. Struck out looking on a decent curve the first time up and swung weakly through a fastball away on the second strikeout. Weak ground ball to second in one of his other at bats, but he got down the line surprisingly fast for his size. Missed his other ab.

Quinn looks like he’s going to be exciting to watch. Hopefully he can get on base because the speed is there to cause havoc.
