Can anyone clue me in on what goes wrong with Colvin when hes bad??? When hes bad, hes realllllllllllllllllly bad, but then he can throw up a line like this. Obviously not trying to trade any prospects for immediate help right now, but with May and Biddle seemingly untouchable it would be nice to have him as trade chip to improve the offense. Gottttttttttttta ton of holes.
I’m going to guess his mechanics fall apart. Maybe they saw him doing something mechanically this year and decided it was easier to fix in the pen then the rotation.
Actually he had a great start to his rehab. If I remember correctly, 2 HR, 2 2B, a 1B and a walk in two games in EST. This wasn’t a good night to be sure, but any game where he is playing is a step in the right direction.
Asche keeps doing well….reports conflict here on his speed…he is on pace for approx 20 steal year Hard to make what kind of wheels he has……maybe JSlasher or any first hand observers can give us more of an insight.
Asche actually does have decent speed…he’s not a true burner but in my opinion he’s also faster than those guys that just “pick their spots” too…I think part of the reason he doesn’t get a ton of stealing chances is that it seems like he’s often singling somebody up to second, or the guy batting after him swings first pitch and puts in play…things like that.
He definitely likes to run though – yesterday he hit that first single and easily stole second on the first pitch to the next batter.
Colvin looked really dominant last night…like brand said, he had the no-hitter going into the sixth inning. The reason he’s back in the rotation is due to the Morgan injury – he had a good run in the bullpen there too so maybe somebody said something that clicked. His fastball looked sharp and velocity-wise he was just blowing it by the batters.
He tends to get in trouble by just totally losing command and walking guys, then he seems to lose his composure and will overthrow and start getting hit around. But last night he looked really solid and even though he walked a few guys and went 3-0 on others, he battled back and hung in there great.
The way for measuring how fast a player runs is a calculated speed score measured by his performance. It is published on fan graphics for all major league and minor league players. A number of factors are used in calculating speed including: number of stolen bases, stolen bases success rate, percentage of triples per plate appearance, percentage grounding into double plays and defensive range calculated by putouts and assists above normal. The speed score is published on a yearly basis. I have taken the yearly info and applied weighed averages to compute their career averages. Cody Asche score is 3.5 which is slightly above the speed of most catchers. I will include the speed scores of all of the Phillie prospects and traded prospects and the speed scores of all major leaguers who have had at least 1,000 plate appearances in the last 10 years. Note most of the scores are calculated thru the first two weeks of May while I have updated Code Asche’s score thru yesterday. I am sorry in advance for the length of this post.

I disagree, actually. Speed does not (always) translate into SB success or defense. For defense, look no further than Brown. We all know he’s got plenty of speed, but his defense would have actually lowered his score based on this metric. As for stealing bases, that gives a better idea of a player’s speed, but still not a great one. Think about it; SB success has a lot to do with other factors than speed, including, but not limited to, catcher’s skill, pitcher’s ability to keep runners close, and runner’s ability to pick up a pitcher’s motion. Utley is a ridiculously successful base stealer (when he does it). He is also an elite defender. As such, he scored well above Pence in the above metric. The problem with that is I’m willing to bet Pence would beat Utley in a foot race.
My point being, this presented metric is useful for demonstrating how a player USES what speed he has, but if the point is to figure out who the fastest players are it is very flawed. You wanna know how fast a player is? Get a stopwatch.
Right. And not even flawed, but irrelevant. U want to know how fast a player is? Get your stopwatch out. But even raw speed is not an absolute indicator of a player’s ability to steal bases. Theft on the base paths is as much about technique as raw speed.
You’re right, but for most purposes the most interesting question is what a player does with his speed. Hence the arguable value of the metric.
I say arguable because the metric is an imperfect measure of effective speed. Its weights its factors arbitrarily, it includes at least one factor of arguable validity (runs/times on base), and it ignores other relevant factors (defense, infield hits, base running events other than stolen bases).* Personally I think the metric on balance is more misleading than not.
More useful metrics – albeit by design answering a more limited question – have recently been designed focusing purely on base running.
To the extent that this discussion stemmed from a discussion of Asche’s batting average and BABIP, I assume the relevant question is whether he has the speed to get a lot of infield hits (which would boost his BABIP and batting average in the long run). I don’t know the answer to that, but knowing that his speed score is a low 3.5 doesn’t help us answer that question.
*I’m going by the version of speed score introduced by Bill James many years ago. From NEPA’s description, it sounds like the metric being used now may be better, though still pretty flawed.
Eldemire’s current speed score is 7.6. Pointer’s score is somewhat a product of small sample size and luck. Last year in 169 plate appearances in rookie ball he had 8 stolen bases without being caught and 4 triples. These number extrapolated over a full season amount to 32 sb and 16 triples with 0 caught stealing. The #’s I listed above were thru the first two weeks of May since then Pointer has been caught stealing twice and has grounded into several double plays thereby lowering his career speed score to 7.8.
You ever see Matt Lecroy play? Once he lost 15 HR power his career was over, because the infield could set up on the outfield grass and still throw him out at first. Having a nice minor league managing career so far though.
No, I never did. I just looked at his career stats though, and he seemed to be a fairly decent role player type of guy. Zero steals for his career. To be slower than Estrada is quite an achievement, so that guy must’ve have been *historically* slow. At least Lecroy attempted to steal a base occasionally – Estrada played 612 games without ever being caught stealing (0 for 0 in his career). That’s a DiMaggio-like streak, if you think about it. Utley has probably run up a couple of streaks well into the 200s without be caught stealing. Of course, he would steal around 20 bases during those stretches 😉
I know it is a small sample but it is fun following the Phillies in the VSL and DSL–some interesting numbers by Hiciano in DSL and a number of young guys in the VSL–Gracia, Herrera, Olivera as well as some of their pitchers. One can only hope–in looking back a few years, Lisalberto Bonilla was in the DSL and Cesar Hernandez in the VSL. It was also interesting watching two Phillies draftees in the Super Regionals-Tim Carver for Arkansas and Josh Ludy for Baylor. Some people were concerned about Ludy’s size for a catcher, but he is about the same size as Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella-5 feet, 8 inches-he did hit 15 home runs with a high BA for Baylor this year and he did show a good patience with 4 walks in the final game. Hopefully, he wil sign.
ehh, it was only a matter of time before the “is this guy a prospect/he’s too old for Clearwater/we need to challenge him” post appeared. They’re always good for a chuckle, though
I do not know how up to date the Phillies website is with signings–last signing listed was on June 10. The Olympian, a paper in Washington, reported that both Mitch Guellar and Andrew Pullin signed and will report to Clearwater. The Coastal Source, a paper in Georgia, said that Zach Taylor signed with the Philles. Hopefully that information is accurate.

Is it true Utley was booed in FL last night ? Not a good start to his rehab
LikeLike
Actually he had a great start to his rehab. If I remember correctly, 2 HR, 2 2B, a 1B and a walk in two games in EST. This wasn’t a good night to be sure, but any game where he is playing is a step in the right direction.
Hey, Utley is the Gillies of the big league team!

Colvin looked really dominant last night…like brand said, he had the no-hitter going into the sixth inning. The reason he’s back in the rotation is due to the Morgan injury – he had a good run in the bullpen there too so maybe somebody said something that clicked. So Brian Pointer is a future 50 base stealer. You heard it here first.
Seriously though, interesting post. Most of the numbers seem to be in fline with what we’d expect.
LikeLike
Get a stopwatch.

it’s called baseball instinct. my guess is + or – 1 on the scale
LikeLike
Right. And not even flawed, but irrelevant. U want to know how fast a player is? Get your stopwatch out. But even raw speed is not an absolute indicator of a player’s ability to steal bases. Theft on the base paths is as much about technique as raw speed.
LikeLike

Thanks NEPA. Didn’t see an entry for Eldemire whom I thought was supposed to be extremely fast.

Wow, there are people slower than Johnny Estrada?
LikeLike
You ever see Matt Lecroy play? Once he lost 15 HR power his career was over, because the infield could set up on the outfield grass and still throw him out at first. Having a nice minor league managing career so far though.
LikeLike
No, I never did. I just looked at his career stats though, and he seemed to be a fairly decent role player type of guy. Zero steals for his career. To be slower than Estrada is quite an achievement, so that guy must’ve have been *historically* slow. At least Lecroy attempted to steal a base occasionally – Estrada played 612 games without ever being caught stealing (0 for 0 in his career). That’s a DiMaggio-like streak, if you think about it. Utley has probably run up a couple of streaks well into the 200s without be caught stealing. Of course, he would steal around 20 bases during those stretches 😉

interesting Pointer is #1. Didnt know speed was a part of his game.

Kiddin me with this? I think a sample size would have been good haha. Nice work though.

I propose we nickname Zach Taylor “Young Rough and Ready”. I also hope he lasts longer than 16 months. #history
