Box Score Recap 6-9-2012

Austin Wright has been hit around pretty badly two of his last three starts.  Strikeouts in May/June are around 6.3 k/9 compared to around 12.9 k/9 in April.  Unreasonable to expect he stay near 13, but still, concerning.  Anyone with a velocity report comparing April and now will receive one cool point.

  1. Maybe Troy should be promoted. At least he can catch the ball. Project “OLD HANDS” isn’t working. Usually the Phils have to be forced into bring up young position guys .Cheese do something internal.

    1. Yes. Let’s get rid of an established major leaguer to try out a guy who is OPSing .720 in AA.

      1. What especially cracks me up about this, aside from the fact that Rollins continues to be good defensively & as a baserunner, is that his hitting is coming around as well – OPSing .823 in June.

More generally, I could somewhat understand the “let the young kids play” frustration so common around here lately but for the fact that the talent at the upper levels of the system is so thin.

        1. I think he was referring to Fontenot in the wake of his poor fielding performance on Saturday. If he wasn’t then his post is even sillier.

            1. Got it.

Actually, the team defense is not that bad overall, but the worst offenders are Fontenot, Pierre, Wiggington and, somewhat surprisingly, Pence. Not that any of those names are surprising.

    1. He’s on the schedule for Sunday. Maybe he started warming before the rainout Friday and they wanted to give him an extra day and/or keep Wright on normal rest. Seems insignificant.

    1. Interesting that he finds center easier then left, but I guess he’s always had the athleticism to play there.

      1. I remember reading an interview with Jim edmonds where he was saying he would never have had the career he did if it wasn’t for moving to center because the ball is so much easier to read. It’s not surprising that Brown finds center easier because that’s always been his issue is getting a read on the ball. Center is always labeled a “harder” position because you have to be able to cover more ground than in left or right.

  2. Dugan with some polarizing left/right splits. Against right handed pitchers he carries a slash of .377/.584/.961. But’s he batting less than Mendoza against lefties.

He’s 30 plate appearances or so from surpassing his career high. Hopefully he avoids injury and gets 300-400 ABs this season. I still think he has a chance to hit

    1. Was looking at that the other day. Wonder about the word he switched from Switch-hitting to batting left. Doesn’t look like he bats much against LHP’s regardless. Never seen him bat left against LHP’s, never seen him bat at all, the couple of Williamsport games made when he was there, he was on the bench. Heard an interview with his father on radio, said he started Switch-Hitting at age eight. Maybe they should look over the situation.

  3. Jiwan James’s HR was of the inside-the-park variety last night. Friend at the game texted me about it and I was shocked considering the “standard” outfield wall that Reading has. Apparently he just bombed it to deep center, got a good bounce, and flew home.

      1. Actually, i would just like to see “strikeout much less” variety. maybe even walk a little more, but strike out much less. great D, great speed, just put it in play more imo

  4. How long until Ervis Manzanillo gets moved into the bullpen? He’s repeating Lakewood and doing worse than last year. I figure with the new draft class coming it may be sooner rather than later. He is supposedly a hard thrower right? Maybe it’ll work out for him in shorter stints.
