Anybody seen how Domonic Brown’s handled the move to Center so far? According to Jim Salisbury, Jordan was encouraged by how he was shagging out there.
Hope his offense picks up because if he can handle centerfield, it’ll make this off season a lot easier for Ruben Amaro Jr.
From a player development standpoint, it’s a little hard to grasp. Brown, from what we’ve seen and been told, has trouble reading routes. The idea for 2012 was to keep him in one place (left field in Allentown, to be precise) where he would get used to adjusting and breaking for balls. Playing center field doesn’t really help him improve reading routes in left, does it? That’s not a rhetorical question; I really don’t know.
That said, from a player *value* perspective, it’s a slam dunk; if he can play a passable center, the production he had last year would play every day in CF. (And you hope he’s better than that eventually.)
It’s not a little hard to grasp, its REALLY hard to grasp. Players rarely ever move UP the defensive spectrum. It also makes no sense for the Phillies as a team. The only reason they moved Brown to left was because they brought in Pence, so Brown was blocked. So why would they move him to center when they already have Shane there? Unless its a foreshadowing move, and they think there’s a good chance Shane is leaving town next year…
I think theres a pretty good chance of Shane leaving, especially if Brown can play CF and remembers how to hit. The team needs to get a little cheaper somewhere.
This move, if permanent, is interesting… I am probably reading WAY too far into this, but… Could the Phillies be preparing to move Vic (this year or let him go for next year), so they can use a cheap option in center, clearing room to sign Hamels?
Routes are easier in CF. Raw speed is a little more important and you have more of the field in front of you. He has the tools to be a passable CF and I wonder if they see him as a potential 1-2 year gap filler before Gillies or James might be ready. Worth trying and it might help boost his confidence as well.
Domonic Brown to CF, a good move. Contrary to what some believe, CF is the easiest position to play if the player has sufficient speed to cover the ground. Brown has such speed and apparently from comments his fielding is well received by management.
Folks who don’t believe CF is the easiest to play given the necessary speed, may confuse a guess of positional value with degree of difficulty. If Brown gets the hitting back where it was a few years back and advances it to MLB quality, he should be a great asset. Perhaps the difficulty in reading angles in the corner OF spots prompted the move, and there may be a factor in the Victorino situation if he moves on or is traded. Perhaps there could also be trade value could be found in some of the slap-hitting CF’s and OF’s beneath Brown in the system.
You never know- everyone considers the outfield to be ubiquitous sometimes, but the angles really are different and it can be tough for some people depending on how you perceive them. We can hope left is Brown’s stigmatism!
I’m a bit concerned with the coaching at Lakewood. I know that players slump, but it seems like that entire lineup started hot then couldn’t make adjustments. Pointer, Gauntlett and Franco are all promising prospects but can’t hit the ball off of a tee right now and aren’t walking much. Does anyone who has been to some games or knows anything about Morandini or Leg’s coaching styles have any information to share?
Lakewood would be helped most by adding a journeyman older A player who can hit–the young guys need to watch someone actually succeeding so they can emulate him. We’ve done this in the past.
Yeah, why did they finally promote James Murphy? Perhaps the people who think MLB teams should draft for positon and need could add a 5th year College Senior who only plays 1B, and will be called a wash-out by many on here before they even start to their mandatory selection list and specify the round also..
Looking at the line-up: Gustavo Gonzalez, Stephen Malcolm, Carlos Perdomo, don’t know if those guys could hit right now with anybody coaching them, maybe ever. And they’re supposed to be better than the highly touted draft class at this time Same for Logan Moore at C. Kyrell Hudson has not hit much either,so far. So, that’s 4 line-up spots that are iffy, So that leaves 5 line-up spots Eldemire, Pointer, and H. Martinez may have benefited from an overly favorable write-up after their draft day So that leaves the yet to establish himself at LO-A,Franco, and Dugan and Altherr. Few guys to count on for production, so maybe they over-try a bit like is seen in the MLB.
Don’t think it is coaching, Legg has been at it awhile, and I don’t think all the teams he was the hitting coach of under-performed. Morandini and Legg were there with mostly the same guys (except for Middle Infield and Catcher) and don’t recall many complaints then.
Franco is doing better lately. I’m not concerned about him now because it looks like he’s steadied himself. Pointer is young enough that he could be in Williamsport, so not a real big deal if he struggles in Lakewood right now. Eldemire is the disappointment. As an older college guy, he shouldn’t be in anybody’s top 30 right now.
What happened to Dom Brown’s hitting? He’s clearly good enough to handle AAA hitting. He pretty much hit .300 at every level in the minors. Did he change his swing, is he hurt or is it mental?
2-3 multi-hit games in a row and he’s back in the .275-.280 range, not unlike Gillies. It’s certainly not what we wanted from him early in the season but his hitting will come around, imo at least. If he’s still in the .230 range come end of June we should worry there’s something wrong. Remember he just missed a few weeks with a bad hammy.
Could also be that he’s bored there (although I’m not 100% sure that’s the case). Jesus Montero’s numbers weren’t up to his standards last year (although a lot better than Dom’s).
Reading has a number of pitchers on the 7 day DL and Lakewood is closer to Reading than Clearwater. Probably just a temporary roster shuffle. Clearwater did the same type thing with Stassi and Numata, earlier.
Darin Ruf has got to be looking at the Lehigh Valley offense and just raise an eyebrow. Seems time to promote him to the pigs and move Overbeck back over to third.
I think it’s time for one of my “Moves I Think the Phillies Should Make” posts…
Lehigh Valley
– release Pat Misch and David Purcey
– replace them with Justin Friend and Mike Cisco
– swap Tim Kennelly for Tug Hullet (Reading)
Reading
– swap Tug Hullet for Tim Kennely (Lehigh)
– replace Justin Friend and Mike Cisco with Tyler Knigge and Hector Neris
– release Frank Gailey and Juan Morillo
– replace them with Bryan Morgado and Colby Shreve
– swap Jeremy Barnes and Carlos Alonso (Clearwater)
– “DL” Brandon Tripp
– replace him with Peter Lavin
Clearwater
– swap Carlos Alonso and Jeremy Barnes (Reading)
– replace Peter Lavin with someone from EST
– swap John Hill and Bob Stumpo (Lakewood)
Lakewood
– swap Bob Stumpo and John Hill (Clearwater)
– release Austin Brough
-replace him with someone from EST
They just did swap Kennelly for Tug Hullett. Since Kennelly is playing as a regular it would seem you want Tug Hullett playing regular at 3B for LVIP. Is it the batting average or age in relation to the rest of AA-AAA roster. Ruf moved up for 3B or LF, maybe. Some of the other swaps were recently made and if the player demoted is not a regular the player advanced will likely not be either. No reason to be releasing players unless they need to . They might do some stuff of this nature after the Rule 4 Draft.

Tend to agree…but the ‘QB of the OF’ IMO should be able to handle balls in flight to the gaps on either side of him, that is critical.

Agree with that…the lineup top to bottom are all 22 and under….say Gauntlett/Harold Martinez, and they are 23.
