The bullpen of the upper part of the organization is currently thin because of the Phillies recent dependence on call ups but certainly some noteworthy performances below.  Next up will be the Clearwater and Lakewood bullpens, Sunday or Monday.

Lehigh Valley

Tyson Brummett, 27, Phils 7th round pick in 2007, 17 games between Reading and LV; 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA and 1 save; 29IP 15H 3BB 35K; 1.13 GO/AO; .152 opp. avg., 0.62 WHIP; 0.9BB/10.9K per nine; It has been an entirely different Tyson Brummett this year, a guy I had written off to organizational status.  More often than not he has dominated with outstanding BB/K ratio and .opp avg..  Not sure if this is an aberration, but he has begun seeing action in critical situations for Lehigh Valley.

Jeremy Horst, 26, Acquired from Cincinnati in 2012; 16 games; 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA; 1 save; 24IP 27H 12BB 20K; 0.67 GO/AO; .281 opp. avg., 4.5BB/7.5K per nine; 1.63 WHIP; .261 vs. LH, .281 vs. RH, .360 with RISP; Horst is a very good example of how an ERA can be deceiving.  He has not pitched well, getting killed with RISP, allowing many an inherited runner to score. That being said, in May he has looked MUCH better than in April.

David Purcey, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2012; 14 games; 0-0 with a 3.06 ERA; 17.2IP 19H 14BB 18K; 0.57 GO/AO; .279 opp. avg., 7.1BB/9.1K per nine; .192 vs. LH, .333 vs. RH, .200 with RISP; 1.87 WHIP. Effective against lefties but not going anywhere walking seven per nine.

BJ Rosenberg, 26, Phils 13th round pick in 2008; 13 games, 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA; 3 saves between Reading and LV; 23IP 20H 7BB 25K; 1.10 GO/AO; .230 opp. avg., Has not allowed a hit in 6.2 innings with RISP for Lehigh Valley; 2.7BB/9.8K per nine. Rosenberg has been outstanding, even more so for LV then for Reading.  He may be next on the call up list for the Phils.

Brian Sanches, 33, Acquired as a free agent in 2012; 12 games, 1-0 with a 3.32 ERA; 19IP 23H 3BB 16K; 2 HR allowed; 0.95 GO/AO; .303 opp. avg., 1.37 WHIP; 1.4bb/75K per nine; .310 vs. LH, .298 vs. RH, .250 with RISP; Sanches is just simply hittable at this stage, although knowing how to pitch gets him out of trouble often.

Michael Schwimer, 26, Phils 14th round pick in 2008; 13 games, 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA; 5 saves, 16.2IP 13H 4BB 18K; 0.94 GO/AO; .210 opp. avg., 1.02 WHIP; .222 vs. LH, .200 vs. RH, .125 with RISP; 2.1bb/9.7K per nine.  Schwimer has once again been dominating but has had trouble translating that to the major league level.  While recognizing I am a bit biased, I would like to see him get a full month of regular work at the major league level to see what he has.

Phillipe Aumont, 23, Acquired from Seattle in 2009; 10 games, 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA; 4 saves; 9IP 6H 12BB 15K; 1 HR allowed; 2.67 GO/AO; .188 opp. avg., .182 vs. LH, .190 vs. RH, .286 with RISP, In his last 3 innings pitched Aumont has walked 10 batters.  Aumont has gone backwards this year to the enigma stage once again.  When he is on, he can’t be hit, however, Aumont really struggles with the mental part of the game. Aumont last pitched in a game on May 2nd, was placed on the DL on May 17th and has now been sent to Extended Spring Training to “get some work in”.  While he did suffer from some minor back issues, this appears to be more of a psychological issue.

Reading

Lisalberto Bonilla, 21, SIgned as a free agent in 2008; 10 games for Clearwater; 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA with 1 save; 13.1IP 9H 4BB 18K; 1.44 GO/AO; .188 opp. avg., For Reading: 8 games, 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA; 10.1IP 11H 8BB 15K; 1.00 GO/AO; .275 opp. avg., Bonilla was lights out for CLearwater and was moved to Reading at the beginning of May.  He has struggled with his control which may be attributed to nerves but has very good stuff and should settle in quite nicely as a 21 year old at AA for the remainder of the season.  Bonilla has major league back-end of the bullpen potential.

Mike Cisco, 25, Phils 35th round pick in 2008, 12 games; 2-2 with a 1.19 ERA; 22.2IP 22H 7BB 18K; 1.44 GO/AO; .265 opp. avg., 1.27 WHIP; .27bb/7.1K per nine; .344 vs. LH, .216 vs. RH, .188 with RISP.  Take away Cisco’s stats vs. lefties and he has pitched very well.  He has had trouble staying off the DL for the past two seasons.

Justin Friend, 25, Acquired in the 2010 Rule 5 Draft; 15 games; 0-0 with an 0.56 ERA; 9 saves; 16IP 11H 6BB 14K; 1 HR allowed; 1.20 GO/AO; .196 opp. avg., .235 vs. LH, .179 vs. RH, .111 with RISP, 1.06 WHIP; 3.3BB/7.8K per nine. Friend has pitched very well and with another 6 weeks of similar production I would expect to see him in Lehigh Valley come late July.

Frank Gailey, 26, Acquired from Toronto in 2012; 13 games, 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA between CLearwater and Reading; 11IP 17H 5BB 12K; 1.63 GO/AO; .340 opp. avg.  Has not pitched well at all.

Juan Morillo, 28, Signed as a free agent in 2012; 12 games, 0-1 with a 9.28 ERA; 10.2IP 10H 25BB 11K; 0.62 GO/AO; .250 opp. avg., 21.1BB/9.3K per nine.  Just awful. Mitch Williams had pinpoint control compared to this.

JC Ramirez, 23, Acquired from Seattle in 2009; 13 games; 0-2 with a 3.55 ERA; 3 saves; 25.1IP 19H 11BB 17K, 2 HR allowed; 0.61 GO/AO; .202 opp. avg., 1.18 WHIP; 3.9bb/5.2K per nine; .286 vs. LH, .153 vs. RH, .237 with RISP. The move to the ‘pen has been fairly smooth for Ramirez who is seeing more critical situations every day.

Jordan Whatcott, 26, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 16 games, 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA between Clearwater and Reading; 28IP 20H 10BB 28K; 1.36 GO/AO; .208 opp. avg., 1.07 WHIP; 3.2BB/9.0K per nine; For Reading: .300 vs. LH, .282 vs. RH, .167 with RISP.  While more effective in Clearwater, he has transitioned nicely to the RPHILS.

Jay Johnson, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2011; 6 games; 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 5.2IP. Now on the DL for the second time this year.  Has been on since May 10.

Chris Kissock, 27, Phils 9th round pick in 2007; Has only thrwn 6 innings this year and has been on the DL for the last month.

Note: Both Jordan Ellis and Chance Chapman have been on the DL all year.
