I haven’t really thought of him as a prospect in awhile, but Tyson Brummett has a 26-2 K/BB ratio between AA and AAA this year. Any reports on his stuff?
I watched the game last night and Brummett was sharp, the announcers said he was throwing harder this year and is more aggressive then he was in the past.
Cesar Hernandez may be the player of the month, at the mid-point of May. He is hitting .393, with a .460, .572, 1.032 slash line. He has also walked as many times as he K’d in the month of May.
He started the year with 5 CS in 8 attempts, but has 5 stolen bases in the last 2 games. Stuffing the stat sheet.
Hewitt had his 8th error in 25 games. He had 7 all of last year. Don’t know what to make of it.
Moises Rivas in the VSL had a very good game but Jesus Morales, who followed him in the game, was better. Both are long in the tooth as Rivas is a 21 year old and Morales a 22 year old. Carlos Duran had a great game. The 18 year old RF’er not only had a hit and a BB but had 2 assists. I’ll be looking forward to AndyB’s discussion to see if he knows anything about him. Herlis Rodriguez was last year’s surprise. Maybe Duran is this year’s? I like the Latin American guys because they are often very young and they don’t have the draft fanfare about them. They often come out of nowhere and suddenly you have a Ruiz, Galvis or a Santana. Santana and Galvis had some fanfare because they got nice bonuses but we knew next to nothing about them when they were signed.
This doesn’t have to do with the box score but I read from Keith Law’s work that the Phillies are really hoping Prep OF/RHP Mitch Gueller falls to them in the sandwich round. Can hit the mid 90’s off the mound but I’m not sure what he’ll be taken as. Law’s blog has him listed as the 39’th best player as an of, and I’ve seen him listed as a RHP on another draft write up on ESPN.
Has there been any chatter about the new CBA and how it will affect the draft? It sounded to me like it will be much more difficult to draw HS talent because the bonuses won’t be as big.
Under the draft rules introduced in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams now have an assigned bonus pool for its picks in the first 10 rounds, based on the sum of predetermined values for each of those selections. Clubs that exceed their pools face penalties in the form of taxes on the overage and the loss of draft picks. Specifically, exceeding a pool by up to 5 percent results in a 75 percent tax on the overage; from 5 to up to 10 percent results in the 75 percent tax and the loss of a first-round pick; from 10 to up to 15 percent results in a 100 percent tax and the lost of first- and second-rounders; and by 15 percent or more results in the 100 percent tax and the loss of two-first-rounders.
All taxes and draft picks collected as penalties will be redistributed among teams that don’t exceed their pools. I’ll be shocked if any club purposely relinquishes a draft pick, but there should be a few million in tax proceeds.
This isn’t a recap comment but thought it would be of interest. It looks like the Phillies are hoping that Prep OF/RHP Mitchell Gueller is available in the sandwich round at pick 40. Reading Keith Law’s blog he stares that the Phillies are really in hard on him. Law has him listed as an OF but I’ve also seen him listed as a RHP who can get into the mid 90’s easily. Another product of Washington State.
Not a chance. They’re paying Kendrick three million bucks for those spot starts, and there’s no space on the 40-man for Cloyd. It would take a (ugh) long-term injury to one of the starters to get Cloyd up to Philly.
That said, I think he’s probably passed Hyatt as the internal candidate in that situation, which is a credit to how well he pitched.
Wait a minute Orr or Kratz could be sacrified. And to correct your statement they are paying KK 3 mil or lose those spot starts (ok one was good). The fact remains they have lost every game Kendrich was been iin.
2/3 were great starts from a 5th starter. (6ip 2 Earned Runs) (5 ip 1 Earned Run)… he just happened to get matched up against Matt Garza and Stephen Strasburg.
Really, he’s had two horrible outings all year… really don’t understand why people (not you but there are some) who root for this guy to fail so that some AAAA player can do the exact same thing.
Looks like KK is taking his start today at least. With the issues in the bullpen I wonder if they’d do just that, move up Cloyd so KK can help in the ‘pen.
Can we still talk about Galvis here? In his last 10 games, he’s 10 for 30 with 4 doubles, a triple, and 3 walks against only two strikeouts, which is .333/.375/.500 (ish – I didn’t check for sacrifices). I don’t expect him to keep that up, but with his glove even a .700 OPS is a pretty good player. He’s looking much less overmatched at the plate than he was a month ago.
No room for him on the 40-man. They already have two guys on the 60-day DL which is going to cause some issues later in the year. They’ll bring up another bullpen arm.
Its interesting that they took Savery over Schwimer. Our boy Schwim really didn’t show much, two years in a row. Maybe its been nerves but Schwim’s location has been terrible in the bigs. Then he went back down and no one is touching him. Its hard to know what to make of that.
He’s had good games. That extra inning game in Washington looked really good until he ran out of gas. He’s got the stuff to be a good relief prospect but like you said, his command disappears at the MLB level.
Phils traded Rich Thompson to Tampa Bay for OF Kyle Hudson.
“Hudson, 25, has hit .291/.378/.318 in 133 Triple-A plate appearances this season. He had four singles in 29 plate appearances for the Orioles last year, resulting in a .143/.143/.143 batting line”
Totally disagree about schwim”s, he has nothing to make me think he is a good prospect as a reliver, only once in two years has he shown any kind of stuff, that makes you think he could pitch, no consictancy and really, did you see any movement on his pitches?? i know I didnt.
Are Gillies, Hewitt and J. James the same player? That is, none of them can hit minor league pitching so none have a shot to hit major league pitching? Just wondering if anyone has ever seen any two of them in the same room, you know, to prove they aren’t the same guy.
Wouldn’t it be nice to see just ONE offensive player – a real prospect, not an organizational guy – knock the absolute crap out of the ball at either AA or AAA, with average AND power? Why can’t we draft/develop those guys any more?? Yes, I know Ruf is hitting the ball well, but he’s not going to be a difference-maker in the majors. Where are our mashers? (Dom Brown…*sigh*.)
I still have hope that Gillies can be an effective leadoff hitter in the major leagues. His OBP is decent right now. If he hits about .260-.270 after missing the majority of two years, I’d be happy.
1. If Cesear Hernandez could manage 10 HR’s per year in the majors he would have the upside of a boardinline all star. Even though his BABIP is .380 this year, he still strikes me as a player who sticks at 2B with a very good hit tool. He’s had a significant improvement in ISO and for all intents and purposes, he’s been a doubles machine this year, which tells me the power is still growing.
2. I’m calling it now, Hewitt’s progress this year is legit. I’m not saying that makes him a prospect, but if he can continue to develop, in 2 years, we might be talking about an MLB player. Each of the last two years he has improved offensively, such that his OPS is now in the 700’s and has a very sustainable batting average of .250 (with a BABIP of .318). His K rate has dropped from 34 to 31 to 26 in the last 3 years, his BB % while hardly impressive has gone from 2.5 to 3.5 to 3.8 each of the last 3 years. He’s never going to be a .400 OBP player, but if he can some how be a .265/.330/.500 player that has value. At this point, he’s creeping back into my top 30 (say 28?).
‘His K rate has dropped from 34 to 31 to 26 in the last 3 years’…been awhile since I have taken a SAT test, but in the mathematical series segment, for the fourth year it should be 19%…am i correct?
