Hot or Not

Another week in the books.  A few observations.

It may be time to really take notice of Tyler Cloyd. He has been very consistent over the last two years and knows how to pitch.

Maikel Franco is starting to turn some heads as a legit 3B prospect. The question remains whether the youngster can hit for power.

Kyrell Hudson needs to start hitting…how does the adage go, “you can’t steal first base”.

Possibly the worst line I have ever seen from Lino Martinez.

Phillipe Aumont’s control issues are noteworthy and should be watched.

  1. The Phillies must have noticed some of the hot hitting. Rosenberg was sent to Lehigh Valley to replace Schwimer and Colby Shreve was double jumped to Reading to replace Rosenberg. Chris Duffy was also promoted to Clearwater to replace Jeremy Barnes who was placed on the DL.

    1. Whatcott was moved to Reading too. Shreve was probably moved because of proximity although Shreve was in Workout Group 2 until the end of ST. That would have implied he would be in Reading or Clearwater.

    2. Rosenberg sucked today against Buffalo for a guy that should be in AAA he struggled in his 1st outing…

      1. I definitely wouldn’t say he sucked. He gave up a homerun to the pitcher who clearly got lucky swinging at the first pitch. The other two hits very very weak. I thought he actually looked good from a first hand perspective not just looking at the boxscore

  2. It may just be a hot start of the season for him, but Brian Pointer seems to be a player that could be in the Phillies top 10 prospects this time next year.

    1. I think there’s a good chance he’s legit. He probably won’t OPS over 1.000 all year, but it’s not a total shock that he’s hitting well. With a big year he’ll definitely be in or near the top 10.

    2. kid can do it all, only 20 years old – not getting alot of publicity, quietly goes about his business like a pro

      1. I saw Brian Pointer’s video on this site when he was draft. Fairly compact swing, with excellent bat speed. Just from the video, I could tell he had a shot. The physically ability is there so hopefully he has the work ethic and some luck. The Phils really do need some impact hitters in their system

Bill Conlin mentioned last year that Franco was the most underrated player in the whole system. Hopefullly we get some video of him going forward.

If he stays healthy, I am pretty sure Adam Morgan will be an MLBer.

  3. Gustavo Gonzalez surprised me. He’s hitting .200 on the year and I thought he was in a rut but I see that he’s 6 -12 in his last 3 games. That’s why he’s on the hot list. He’s also list as 6’2″ and zero pounds. That’s old weird harold to the max (how’d you like the Bill Cosby reference?).

    1. I noticed his height and weight a couple weeks ago. I guess that means he has huge power potential once he fills out.

  4. I’m not really sure that a .125 average qualifies Hewitt for “Not Hot”. That’s pretty close to his mean….

  5. Early in the season I sent around a report saying that I had watched a number of Aumont’s games and it appeared that he was not ready. He still has too much trouble with his control – there are just a lot of moving parts in his motion. However, his stuff is top shelf. I wouldn’t worry too much about Aumont. All the ability and even all the pitches are there (in fact, all the pitches are there for him to be a starter, but that’s another conversation). He just has to become consistent, but that might gradually occur over the course of a few years. Or next month. Who knows?

  6. I like what I’m seeing from Gillies of late. 8 game hitting streak, batting 330 in that timeframe with 40% of his hits for extra bases. I’d like to see a little more steals and walks but the slow and steady progression is much better than piling on a bad team then going 0-4 the next 3 nights.

    1. And really, Gillies after all the time he missed could be struggling quite a bit out of the gate, so the fact that he is holding his own and doing some good things this early in the season is a good sign.

  7. watching aumont, yes he has good stuff, but has no idea how to pitch, doubt he will ever be anything.with his stuff he should have figured it out by now. there are a lot of guys who can throw hard, but few great or good pitchers. this kid to me will never get it.

    1. That is why he is in the pen. Dominant stuff with marginal control and low pitching IQ = bull pen guy. Look at Pappelbon and there are many time Mitch has stated in the last inning wildness is an advantage as most hitters want to be the hero and are going to be aggressive. Just to clarify i am not saying Aumont doesn’t need to improve control just that he will be something in based on his stuff alone.

  8. After last nights game, (and for that matter prior to last nights game) Franco should be the talk of the town. .290 BA, with a standard .300 BABIP, More homeruns in this short season then all year last year, ISO in the 200’s, 7.5% walk rate, 17% k rate. And he’s only 19 in A ball, can’t ask any more then that.

  9. Question: Who is the better prospect, Adam Morgan or Austin Wright? By the stats, they are both really good strike out guys so far, but Wright has been walking a lot.

    Like

    1. I think they’re awfully close. If Morgan can keep his current K/9 this high and continues to throw in the 90s, I think he would be the better prospect for now. However his K/9 was a lot lower last year, so this could be a fluke. Also, Morgan threw in the high 80s in college (I think), so we will have to see if he maintains the higher velo he had from his last start.

I still like Wright a lot though.
