May and Biddle make the BP Top 101 Prospects List

May comes in at 51 and Biddle comes in at 84. Glad to see Biddle getting the support there from Kevin Goldstein. Former Phillies prospects on the list include d’Arnaud (16), Cosart (48), Gose (68), and Singleton (73). Discuss.

  1. Goldstein did a Q&A on twitter when the rankings went up. Two Phillies questions were answered. The answers to both should be obvious to anyone who follows the Phillies prospects closely but I figured they were worth mentioning.

There wasn’t really a 3rd Phillies prospect who was close to making it to the top 101 (https://twitter.com/#!/Kevin_Goldstein/status/168973316533665792)

He sees no issues with May staying as a starter (https://twitter.com/#!/Kevin_Goldstein/status/168977747023106048)

  2. Maybe mentioned elsewhere on the phuturephillies site: Regarding another recent set of rankings, Ron Shandler’s Baseball HQ website recently provided a short list of “deep sleepers outside of the Top 100 minor leaguers”, and both Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco were mentioned.

And, yes, good to see Biddle get Goldstein’s attention.

    1. Aaron Altherr is such a deep sleeper he’s behind about 10-15 other deep sleepers on the Phils roster.

  3. Two sounds about right. If you look down our top 30, who else would be in the top 101? Colvin has to reprove himself. Valle has some holes that he has to fill. Galvis, Pettibone or DeFreatus or Aumont? I don’t think so. But if you add former pharm hands, it looks pretty good for the Phils and the future. Not with the guys who are gone but the young draftees who will be coming along. Of course like any good prospectus, you have to put this disclaimer in it, “past performance is not an indication of future performance.” But good organizations tend to replicate past performances.

  4. Sad to see three highly ranked former Phillies position prospects. Used to be that every organization wanted to be pitcher heavy. I’m very happy the Phils decided to go position happy in the most recent draft. In three years, I think the weighting of the system will be seen as much more even between pitching and position players.

  5. Surprised at how high Cosart was ranked. Don’t have access beyond the list so I don’t know his justification.

    1. Three spots ahead of May seems fine, most lists have them fairly close. If you believe he will be a starter long term he has the tools.

Keith Law had him 78, two spots behind May at 76 so Goldstein’s rankings don’t seem unreasonable.

  6. Hey James, you might want to put up a Major League discussion post. It seems like an ealier post got into a lot of Rollins and other Major Leaguers. It looked like our prospect blog got hijacked. I think people are getting antsy for Spring Training so we’ll start straying from our prospect discussions. Has anyone heard from Rickey Branch? I wonder if he’s going to ST this year… as always.

  7. Gose is starting to get lots of attention as a prospect. He showed more power and patience last year that got a little hidden by his mediocre batting average. Much better SB percentage also. He could be a 20 HR/50 SB guy with enough patience to lead off and gold glove skills in CF.

    1. I think Gose should be higher on these lists. He did all that in AA while he was 20 for most of the year. How can you not be very high on a toolsy guy putting up good power and patience numbers with gold glove defense and 70 speed? The only real knock on him I see is that he strikes out like his life depends on it.

        1. I know that was what you are seeing. I was just pointing out the danger in toolsy prospects is that sometimes they can become stars. My fear on Domingo Santana as well. That is the price high market teams pay for a constant stream of trades for players in the arbitration years (their most productive years).

  8. Great question would be who are the top 5 phils prospects who with big seasons in 2012 could be on this list a year from now?

1 – Brody Colvin – I really believe he will have a big year and be on this list a year from now.

2 – Freddy Galvis – if he continues to play great defense and he would put up a real solid offensive season at AAA, he could be towards the back end of this list.

3 – Sebastian Valle – improvement in some of the peripherals at AA and considering his position, he could make this list.

4 – Larry Greene Jr – would need a huge season

    5 – Jon Pettibone

    1. I would venture a guess that is Valle performs at a similar lever with the expected increase in power that he will crack the list. But he is still second in % to make it behind Colvin because people love the potential and if he shows the ability to fulfill any of it then he will skyrocket up.

      1. I also think Valle because if he improves his plate discipline, he will be a young catcher in AA that can defend well and hit some. A lot of scouts will see him this year, so there is a chance.

    2. Top 5 Phillies who could be on BPs top 101, if they have a great year:

      1. Valle – Because he is a catcher and will be considered close
      2. Colvin – I doubt he will turn it around, but if he does, he has the pedigree to get noticed on lists like these.
      3. Aumont – Could be considered a dominant arm, but if he has a big year he might get too much MLB time to qualify.
      4. Franco – Will be one of the youngest players in full-season ball. If he leads his team in hitting again, that would gain some attention.
      5. L Greene – If he has a big year, being a #1 pick will certainly put him on the national radar.

  9. Don’t forget JRod, Aumont, Pointer, and Gillies. Next year, I predict there will be at least 20 Phils prospects in the top 100. In case you can’t tell, I’m being sarcastic. You guys are crazy.

    1. None of us are saying it is a guarantee but through promotions to top players on the list especially at the catcher position it is not out of the question for a Valle to get in around the 80’s. And being that Aumont has been present on similar lists since he was drafted, it is not a stretch that if he improves his control a little he makes a mid season top 50 list somewhere. There are currently 5 phillies draftees on the top 100 list. So it is not out of the question a couple more who either progress on their current arc or who explode with great seasons(John Singleton) may appear on future lists.
