  1. Overbeck, adjusted well to AAA, I wonder what the Phillies plans are for him in 2012. Start in LHV, and if he explodes out of the gate—who knows?

    1. I hope that Overbeck and Ruf get some time in the outfield as they play in the AFL. It is nice to see Overbeck hitting at a .400 clip in the last few weeks but he is not going anywhere at first base. If he can play both 1b and the outfield that may help him earn a bench spot at some time in the next year.

      1. I think I remember seeing that the AFL team the Phils are sending guys to also has Trout, Harper and hopefully Gillies in the OF, so that probably won’t happen.

I actually hope that Overbeck and Ruf don’t get a chance in the OF, because that would mean Gillies is healthy.

        1. Yeah, Trout is currently on that team. I would be surprised after his time in the majors though if the Angels didn’t substitute another player in for him.

  2. Chuck LaMar on Dom Brown—CSNPhilly.com:
“Over the next few weeks, depending on what happens at the major-league level, we will sit down with Domonic and map out what the best direction is, He needs to be involved. Whether that is to get ready to go somewhere and get some at-bats this winter or whether it’s get away from the game for a while and regroup, or maybe a combination of the two. Whatever is done, the big thing is he needs to be able to look back and learn from this experience. If he does, he will give himself a chance to be the player that all of us think he has the chance to be. But he can’t stick his head in the sand and not learn from the struggles.”

    1. Interesting comment to make publicly, sounds like the organization must be deciding not to include him in Sept / Oct plans and this is the media strategy around defending against not using him the remainder of this year…

      1. Agree……and the comment about ‘can’t stick his head in the sand”—what does that imply and what is the point in saying that!

        1. Don’t see any reason to say that publicly, but it sounds like they must think he is not learning / listening from what he’s experiencing. If true that’s too bad because all we heard last year was how coachable he was and how eager he was to learn. I’m hoping it was just a dumb thing to say by Lamar…

  3. Don’t know where to post this, but I saw in the past couple of weeks that Carlos Carrasco and Kyle Gibson are both headed for TJ surgery. CC was a former #1 prospect of ours and KG was a draft pick that we were all upset when the Phillies failed to sign him out of HS. Pitchers are high risk even when they do develop nicely.

  4. Anyone know what Savery’s velocity is these days? It seems that he really has reinvented himself after flirting with becoming a position player. He definitely warrants a call up now.

  5. I like seeing Garner’s name on the list. I’m not sure it is enough to get him the double jump. Most likely a start at Lakewood and then a quick call up to Clearwater. Guys like Wright and Morgan have a better chance to start at Clearwater.

  6. Interesting article on Hewitt by Bill Conlin. Doesn’t actually build a whole lot of enthusiasm that he’l ever be anything but a .230 minor league hitter with 80 power.

    1. The kid cannot hit a curve—cannot pick up the spin—si I told Bill, the kid should look into LASIK and improve eyesight to 20-15—Bill tells me the medical procedure, though millions of people have had, if it doesn’t work, could further damage his career. Exactly what does he have to lose!

      1. I bet he’s close to the point where he’s willing to try anything. Like Conlin said, he’s repeating Low A and still striking out at a prestigious rate with a .235 avg.

His OBP is under .300 – that’s unbelievable. And unbelievable in a totally awful sort of way.

  7. ron…I’ve seen you post this before. Do you know what Hewitt’s eyesight is now? I’ve had the procedure and now see 20/15, but I still highly doubt I could pick up the spin on a curve ball. Just sayin’

    1. Agree. It’s not just a raw eyesight thing. It’s a braoder cognitive set of functions, I would speculate. Awareness, ability to ignore anxieties and relax as a hitter, focus, concentration, many, many more traits. However, if his eyesight is poor or borderline for fact, get the surgery. It fails at times, but has a fairly high rate of success. Second operation after failures also help fairly often.
