Nice to see Bonilla with a good start. He’s tailed off lately, probably getting a little worn out near the end of the season. No problems tonight though.

Rough start for Kleven.
Nice game for Collier and a good start for Bonilla.
What’s up with Pettibone leaving after 2?
Two hits for Overbeck. Nice relief outing for DeFratus.
Saw in today’s paper that Chuck LaMar says that Savery is now throwing 94 mph Looks like he may be regaining the form he had in college. Wouldn’t it be nice if that turns out to not be a blown first round pick after all.
A bit surprised he’s not starting in the AFL, then. If his arm just needed a period of time off to recover (not unheard of), the organization is doing itself a disservice to not find out if he can throw 94 for six innings ever fifth day.
The problem is regardless of where his fastball velocity is, his secondary stuff needs to be good enough to start. Does Savery have 3 pitches that he can throw for strikes? If not his upside is a reliever and hopefully it is better than LOOGY but if that is it at least he is something.
I guess my impression of him when he was drafted was he had the secondary stuff to start, but it was a question of his regaining his velocity/command. Does someone who saw him start want to chime in?
One pitcher who has had a strange year is JC Ramirez. If you take his first four starts and last 3 he was lights out going 7-0 43.1 innings and 7 ER. The rest of the year he was awful…4-13 100.2 innings and 65 ER.
So Michael Schwimer’s blown two games in four apperances. I’m glad the people who post here don’t influence what Ruben Amaro does… otherwise the Phillies would have DFA’d Lidge so Schwimer could have a spot on the post season roster.
I know we love Schwimer on this site, but he has marginal big league stuff and his location is not major league ready based on the 6-7 innings he has thrown in the big leagues.
Watching Schwimer today actually reminded me of Lidge, what with the multitude of sliders/offspeed stuff and poor fastball location. The difference is that Schwim is hopefully still improving while Lidge is doing the opposite of that.
The difference is Lidge has one of the best, if not the best slider in the game of baseball.
I think Schwimer is going to have a decent career as a 7th inning guy, but I think this should be a lesson to everyone who overreacts to minor league stats and calls for the spots of veterans.
For me, Schwimer needs to improve his location and find an out pitch against lefties. They’re hitting .375 against him since his call up or something like that.
Waaaaay too early to give up on Schwimmer. Marginal big league stuff? 91-94 fastball with some good secondary pitches? People forget that it’s hard to break into the bigs. Many current stars had rocky roads to the bigs: Vic, Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Utley.
Hamels got knocked around (although granted, he came up and faced the AL East in 2006).
Utley hit .230.
But the difference is the Phillies weren’t contending when those two came up. My point is that everyone put Schwimer on the post season roster and so far, he’s struggled in every outing.
Its not about giving up on anybody, but many here ever actually saw Schwimer pitch. I could just go by the stats, which said he deserves a shot to be a big league pitcher. Now that I have watched him a couple games, I can say his pitches don’t look impressive (regardless of the results). In terms of stuff, I’d rank Stutes then Herndon then Schwimer.
It’s clear that Schwimer shouldn’t be on the playoff roster this year. He isn’t getting Braun, Upton or Fielder out with that stuff. Now we can get a look Aumont to see what he looks like against major league hitters.
Not even the age but in Interleague play, he went up against (off the top of my head) Tampa Bay (got smoked), New York (held his own but lost), and Baltimore (got smoked).
Victorino was Rule 5’d twice I think so its fair to say he had a different path to the bigs. Hamels had a lot of injuries in the minors and before I think as well – didn’t he punch a guy in a barfight? Sounds like something Brett Myers would do but I think it was Hamels. Cliff and Doc both got sent back down to the minors.
I really think Schwim has major league stuff and its way too quick to judge a guy on a few outings. He was consistently hitting 90-93 on the gun yesterday in the ballpark and its 1-2 mph slow. His breaking stuff and commandhave looked ok in one or two outings if not in the others. I agree he shouldn’t be on the playoff roster and he’s not ahead of Stutes or Lidge right now but I think we should plan on him being a solid middle reliever for the Phils for years to come, possibly a setup man I think is his upside.
It’s not about judging him. It was about some of the posters on this site anointing him a spot on the post season roster without throwing a big league pitch.
My point is that from watching him on television a couple of times, it looks like his slider doesnt have a lot of break or movement and his fastball he cant locate, but even if he locates his fastball at 93 with a very average slider, dont know who much he could help in the future, doesnt look like a top end releiver is what i am saying
Cody Asche is making Adam Buschini look like a great prospect.
